Vice Principal Curriculum Innovation, Quality & Performance | Coventry College

As Vice Principal Curriculum Innovation, Quality & Performance of Coventry College, you will join a completely new senior leadership team committed to transforming the College at pace and delivering the vision of developing a high-quality and highly accountable college for the City of Coventry.

  • Location: Coventry
  • Salary: £80k

About the role

Following the appointment of Carol Thomas as Principal & Chief Executive, who joined the College in August 2020, this is a unique opportunity to join a new strategic team and work alongside Gemma Knott (Vice Principal Business Growth, Engagement & Partnerships) and Simon Crick (Vice Principal Finance & Resources). The College is keen to attract the interest of a strategic curriculum and quality leader, steeped in experience and knowledge of the further education sector and skills agenda, to the position of Vice Principal Curriculum Innovation, Quality & Performance.

Joining the Senior Leadership Team at such a pivotal moment offers a fantastic opportunity to lead on the continued transformation of Coventry College to achieve Ofsted ‘Good’ and beyond.

Reporting to Carol Thomas, as Vice Principal Curriculum Innovation, Quality & Performance, you will be tasked with leading a new approach to curriculum development and planning and ensuring a culture of high-performance and high accountability is embedded with staff teams and departments, working collegiately to support one another for the benefit of students and the City.

Skilled in developing teams and positively affecting their performance, in this role you will be looked to for the implementation and ongoing review of rigorous quality improvement processes which enhance good practice, and develop those areas which need it. There is a great deal of excellent teaching and learning taking place at Coventry College, and your job will be to encourage the sharing of knowledge and expertise, and oversee the design of new processes – at pace – that will see the College produce a consistent, efficient, high-quality approach to curriculum planning, delivery and student support.

As Vice Principal Curriculum Innovation, Quality & Performance you will be responsible for the leadership and development of:

  • Quality standards and improvement
  • Curriculum innovation and planning
  • Curriculum delivery (all learning programmes excluding apprenticeships)
  • Faculty leadership
  • Ofsted preparedness and nominee function
  • Student achievement, progression and destinations
  • Safeguarding
  • Student services, engagement and student voice
  • ALS & learner support
  • Work experience
  • Digital/VLE development & ICT Delivery

The postholder will be the Designated Senior Manager for safeguarding.

Who we're looking for

The Board has set some clear and challenging targets, and together they have high expectations. Along with your SLT colleagues, it will be your job to realise these on their behalf.

Coventry College is aspirational for itself and for the City which it serves. Recent times have proved challenging for the College, and in the short-term things may remain challenging as the College moves all delivery on to one campus from two, at the same time as delivering financial turnaround and rapid quality improvement. The College continues to work closely with agencies of the Department for Education and Ofsted on the development of robust improvement plans, therefore experience of leading inspections and developing post-inspection action plans, which have resulted in improved performance, is essential.

Recognising the core relationship that exists between curriculum, data and funding, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the various funding streams relevant to the College and have experience of overseeing substantial revenue and expenditure budgets.

As a qualified teacher and expert in leading post-16 vocational and technical education, you will bring your expertise of strategic curriculum planning across a broad range of delivery areas and have a real eye for the detail, to ensure the College’s plan is efficient and effective, fully utilising the expertise within the organisation and the facilities available.

As the College further develops strategic partnerships to enhance the offer to students, your experience of networking and developing strategic relationships alongside your broader knowledge of sector-based policy, will need to be applied at the College, working closely with the Vice Principal Business Growth, Engagement & Partnerships.

With an exceptional Senior Leadership Team in place now, and further appointments being made to the wider leadership of the College, the future looks positive for Coventry College and the organisation has the support of local and regional stakeholders from the public, civic, education and commercial sectors. Recognising the importance of the College in the City and region, they need someone who has the drive and determination to work extremely hard and with the ambition to produce a lasting legacy through the delivery of a high-performing, high-quality and financially resilient college.

Closing date for formal applications: 12pm, Tuesday 4th May 2021

Welcome from Carol Thomas, Principal and CEO

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in joining a new Senior Leadership Team at Coventry College.

You will be joining at a time when the College is undergoing a period of rapid change – which lends itself to having a leadership team that has a small, flat structure, because we all need to be getting things done in a way that can make best use of our experience and therefore make a meaningful impact.

We recently appointed Simon Crick as Vice Principal Finance & Resources to support our Vice Principal for Business Growth, Engagement & Partnerships, Gemma Knott, and myself which is a real coup for the College. Our leadership team is nearly complete, and once the Vice Principal Curriculum Innovation, Quality & Performance starts here, I expect this team to be one that is here to provide stability for the College over the coming years.

The national focus of further education is about providing the next generation with the right level of training for jobs, so it is key that our college is working with employers to understand their needs, so we can create a meaningful pathway for our students which also fulfil employment needs. We have now devised a three-year plan around strategic skills to understand how we can meet those needs by growing the capabilities of our existing facilities and teaching staff.

The lockdown has given us an opportunity to look at the city centre campus which has received overdue investment. Having a single, city-centre campus from September 2021 with up to 8,000 students will help us to create a vibrant and modern atmosphere for both students and our staff.

Coventry College is such an exciting place to work. Staff are starting to see a change now as a result of the time and investment being paid to them as individuals, which, in turn, positively impacts the service that is being provided to our students.

My vision for the College is to be somewhere that people would want to study and know that they are going to get high quality education. If you share that vision, have the ambition and energy to help us achieve what we need to, and in the relatively short space of time available, then I very much welcome your application.

Carol Thomas
Principal & CEO
Coventry College

Transforming lives, enhancing business, enabling communities.

Coventry College was formed in August 2017 and is the largest provider of general further education in the City. The College delivers a broad curriculum to over 10,000 learners across a range of exciting and dynamic subject areas from entry level to higher education. The curriculum offer includes vocational, technical and professional education and training designed to meet the needs of the local community and economy.

Building upon the rich histories of its predecessor colleges, City College and Henley College, the Coventry College can trace its origins back to the 19th century with the formation of the Mechanics Institution in 1829.  Both predecessor colleges have a proud history of working closely with their communities and industry and this remains a key part of Coventry College’s ethos and vision to provide exceptional education, skills and training.

In September 2021, the College will be moving all operations to the City Campus. With over £1m having already been invested in the single campus, further developments are planned to ensure students have access to high quality and vibrant learning spaces and facilities.

The vision of Coventry College is underpinned with a set of core values:

  • Learner first: they have high aspirations and high expectations for all learners that supports and challenges each learner to learn, develop, progress and succeed.
  • Excellence: they strive for excellence in all their work, enabling learners to realise their full potential in a positive, inspiring and caring environment.
  • Inclusivity: they are open to all learners, offering a safe environment and celebrating the diversity of their community and the success of their learners.
  • Teamwork: the college works collaboratively to deliver their vision, mission and values.
  • Trust: they value staff, learners, stakeholders and partners, promoting mutual respect and a culture of openness, personal responsibility and accountability.
  • Transparency: they engage with all stakeholders, consulting and seeking their input and welcoming feedback to support growth and improvement.

Coventry is a dynamic and thriving city, with a huge range of growth, innovation and regeneration drivers, albeit with significant socio-economic disparities to overcome in order to ensure these opportunities are fully grasped by the city’s residents.

Coventry is ranked as the eighth best city to live, work and do business in the UK.

The evident growth in job creation and resident employment levels are also accompanied by skills shortages, with many employers citing this as a key inhibitor to further growth, particularly at higher levels. Alongside these concerns, there is an ageing workforce with significant replacement skills and retraining demands forecast to be placed upon businesses over the next 10 years. There are over 20,000 working age residents who still have no formal qualifications and a gap in the number of people in the city region who have higher education qualifications, compared to national and regional comparators.
