CEO and External Trustees | University of Wolverhampton Students’ Union (UWSU)

The UWSU exists to represent all 22,000 members - every Wolverhampton University student. This is a great opportunity to play a key role in developing a dynamic charity as we formulate a new strategic plan that better meets the students' needs.

  • Location: Wolverhampton
  • Salary: CEO: £47,315 - £55,391

About us

Our mission at The University of Wolverhampton Students’ Union (UWSU) is working with students and stakeholders to ensure the Student Voice is heard and the Student Experience is enhanced, leading to Student Success.

This Mission is underpinned by the following values:

Be Fair

By being inclusive and offering opportunities for our all students to grow.

Be Responsible

We understand the impact of our actions and actively seek ways to eliminate negative consequences.

Be Honest

We are there to listen and support, but like a true friend tell students what they need to know and be honest by giving the right information.

Be Respectful

Our approach is to listen, to connect and welcome all individuals into our community.

Be Compassionate

We are passionate about our students and we will support them throughout their time at University.

Be Ambitious

We are innovative and visionary; we want to push the boundaries of what is possible. We are not afraid to try and we are not afraid to fail.

The Road Ahead: Achievements and Challenges

The UWSU is going through a transformative process fuelled by an external review that looked at our governance and management structures to ensure we continue our valuable work with our members.

We have high hopes for the future as we aim to make the Students’ Union the very best it can be, enabling all our members to get the support they require.

There are numerous challenges and opportunities on the horizon; our last three year strategic plan (2017-2020) has expired, and once the new Chief Executive is in post, we will develop a new strategy to ensure a clear focus on engaging more students with advice, support and opportunities.

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for showing an interest in the CEO & Trustee positions with the Students’ Union at the University of Wolverhampton.

We think that it is an exciting and challenging time for a leadership role with us. We have had some testing years and are undergoing a cultural shift. We believe that these will be rewarding and interesting roles for the right candidates. You will have the opportunity to work within a diverse and inclusive environment that is continuously striving towards improving the student experience and support services here at Wolverhampton.

In a rapidly changing world, the City and the University are investing in developing the area. We are dedicated to helping develop the hearts and minds of our students, so that they can be a part of shaping the change. Student Voice is important and we are seeking a CEO and Trustee that share the values which we are guided by as a Union.

As Chair of the Board, I commit that we will provide a supportive environment to help deliver the vision and strategy of the SU. Ayo, our proactive Union Affairs Officer, is working hard with the University, officer and staff team to support this. We are seeking a CEO and two Trustees who can provide the guidance and leadership to ensure our objectives are met, and that the student experience is continuously evolving.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to hear how you can help us deliver what is required and desired.

Sarah Bishop
Chair

Ayo Falana
Union Affairs Officer on behalf of the Board of Trustees

About the role

University of Wolverhampton Students’ Union represents and supports around 22,000 students across three main campuses. We have income of over £1m and more than 20 core staff, students and volunteers working together to promote student interests, support their welfare and provide social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities.

There is something very special about our students. Many have overcome multiple systemic barriers simply to get to university. This often means that they require support and guidance to get the most from their time at university and achieve their potential when they leave. This has been compounded by the Coronavirus pandemic, so never has it been more important to provide effective support.

We have not always effectively supported our students to have the genuinely life changing and inspirational experience they deserve. With this in mind, we had an external review and over the past 12 months we have been on a programme of organisational change. We have new articles of association, a proposed new staffing structure, new Trustees and an improving culture.

Our potential is huge and with the right leadership we can now make a great difference to many people’s lives. It is imperative that we appoint somebody who is motivated and driven by that aim. The future is about innovation. We have started to innovate with our sector leading school rep system. We need a new strategy that adopts innovation in all areas of the SU that is unique to us and responds to the needs of all our students.

We have passionate Officers elected to drive change, and they need your support, guidance and coaching to achieve their aims too.

We know that this will be challenging. However, you have the full support of our board, the resources and commitment of the senior leadership within the university, and a fabulous staff team who already give their all for students.

Who we're looking for

We are looking for somebody who is credible with all our stakeholders, and demonstrates modern leadership characteristics including: empathy, high-levels of self and emotional awareness, the ability to develop relationships that are transparent and open and displays a calm and controlled demeanour, is direct when required, and leads with a clear vision and values. The sophistication to work in partnership with the university as a key funder and stakeholder, yet recognise the independence of the union to offer constructive insights and positive challenge from a position of partnership, will help you to succeed in this role.

You will need to understand governance, the role of the board and effectively utilise the resources available to you within the university and amongst your trustees.

Building trust, respect, partnership working, and developing more integration on strategic agendas with all stakeholders will be a key measure of your success.

You will be visible, approachable, passionate, enthusiastic and driven to help students achieve more.

Around half of our students are BAME, yet our staff team is predominantly white. We need to change this. We strongly encourage people who have experienced or addressed racism, homophobia, sexism or any other form of discrimination affects people’s lives to apply. Whatever your background and identity, you must be prepared to make appropriate interventions that support more inclusivity and challenge such behaviours when they see it and be able to support others to do the same.

About the role

With this in mind, we had an external review and over the past 12 months we have been on a programme of organisational change. We have new articles of association, a proposed new staffing structure, new Trustees and an improving culture.

The External Trustee role is critical to our success because two thirds of our board will change every two years. The board is made up of four Sabbatical Officers, who are elected by students every year, up to four Student Trustees, and four External Trustees including the Chair of the Board. The External Trustees provide significant skills, expertise, and important continuity to ensure that the board delivers its legal obligations and appropriate support for the CEO, staff and other Board Members. A unique part of the External Trustee role in a Students’ Union is ensuring that Sabbatical Officers and Student Trustees are supported to have a positive experience as Board Members. Having the opportunity to work closely with first-time leaders is a real privilege.

There is more to this role than four quarterly board meetings. In supporting our Union to develop we will need practical guidance and people who are also motivated to make an ongoing and consistent contribution in a sub-committee, outside of meetings and on special projects. We anticipate your time contribution to be around 100 hours per year or one day per month.

Who we're looking for

We are relatively small, operating with limited resources and going through transformational change. Therefore, we feel that recruiting people with backgrounds in human resources to strategically guide the development of our culture and the journey of our employees would be ideal. We are also interested in people with business and commercial acumen as well as an understanding of culture change. We will not rule out people from other backgrounds if you have experience of organisational change.

Around half of our students are BAME, yet our staff team and External Trustees are predominantly white. We need to change this.
