We are seeking collaborative people who are excited about helping the Union of Students at the University of Derby grow, develop and improve. We are looking for two Trustees, including someone with HR expertise. If you have a connection to the University or local community then we would love to hear from you.
The Union of Students is a £3m income values driven charity. We exist to meet the needs of our members, the 20,000 students at the University of Derby and associated colleges. We do this by upholding the following principles and values: Vibrant, Ambitious, Supportive, Inclusive and Open, and by delivering a range of quality services to support our students. The Union operates with a student-led governance structure, which provides opportunities for students to lead the organisation in making the student experience better for all.
The Union enjoys a positive relationship with the University of Derby and Elected Officers have seats at nearly all University Committees. The University takes seriously the notion that the Union is the voice of students at Derby. Moreover, the University provides the Union with a grant to fund the ongoing development of effective representative structures, volunteering, society activities, sporting provision, advice and support for its members. In addition, the Union generates its own income through the operation of a series of retail units, a coffee shop and a bar and entertainment venue.
We have a living strategy that we adapt as we grow and have recently extended to 2022. We are in a stable position and can take risks. We are ambitious and like to trial new ideas to develop new services as well as improve existing ones.
Over the next couple of years, it is likely that our board will be reviewing our estate and considering improvements to contribute more on supporting the positive mental health of students. We also want to be more active in supporting students in their learning.
We are seeking collaborative people who can provide constructive challenge and who are excited about helping us grow, develop and improve. HR expertise will be valuable in one of our Trustee roles and we are open-minded about the other. It’s desirable to appoint people who feel a connection to the university or local community.

Union of Students, President
Chair of Trustees
If you could distil the Union down to its core you’d find change. We manifest the student community at the University of Derby, giving students a collective voice that can be used to change all sorts of things that affect them during their time at university.
Issues with courses can be changed through our Academic Representation scheme and other changes, big and small – from how much money is invested into sports teams down to to what food is on offer in the bar, can happen through the ideas forum.
Even changes to how we effect change can be made through our governance structures. These are all written by students and set out the rules on how everything at the Union is done.
Change is at the heart of everything we do, and students are at the heart of every change we make.
The Union of Students’ Advice team provides a free, confidential advice and support service for all University of Derby students. Independent to the University, our advice is completely impartial for any student seeking advice, support and information on a range of issues and concerns.
Our main areas of advice include; academic issues including offences, appeals and issues affecting personal studies; student conduct, complaints and disciplinaries.
We currently operate 150 sport clubs and societies covering everything from football to course-related societies and everything in between. We do this as we want to foster a strong sense of togetherness and belonging in learning communities and beyond and we aim to do this by creating opportunities for students to come together in a myriad of ways; sports, societies, events or representative groups.
We now have 2,500 students engaged in our societies and clubs.
Through the Union’s governance structure, we are truly led by students and want to make sure all voices are heard. We believe that everyone should be able to contribute meaningfully to their learning environment and be represented effectively.
Our full time Officer Trustees are the top of the structure. Sitting just below the full-time officers, and aligned to each College, student interest, and liberation area are the 30 Part Time Officers. Representing the voice of students across all academic programmes are our 766 Programme Reps.
Commercial services play an integral role in delivering a fantastic student experience for our students and through this work generate vital income which we invest to fund and resource activities across the Union. For this reason, we recognise our commercial trading services are a key enabler, which we need to develop in order to achieve our wider strategic ambitions.
We currently operate our own chain of coffee shops, blends, academy and a bar.
