UHS Pharmacy Limited is looking to develop their expert board by introducing a new Non-Executive Director who will bring the expertise and focus to ensure each patient’s needs, journey and experience remains at the centre of their work.

About the role

UHS Pharmacy Limited is an independent subsidiary of Southampton General Hospital and provides outpatient pharmacy services. Established to improve the patient experience, we use the latest technology to deliver our services as efficiently as possible. As well as the dispensing of outpatient prescriptions, we offer medicines advice. Our team of 20 are passionate about providing excellent customer services from a purpose-built pharmacy located within the main hospital building.

We cater for patients with complex needs and have an unrelenting focus on improving their experience with us. Given our expertise, and in the context of regional collaboration across Hampshire and Dorset, we are considering the potential for expansion; both within our home Trust and across other hospital settings. Our new Chair has been working with the board and team to create a plan that will improve and develop our services; putting us in a good position to realise some of these opportunities.

Who we're looking for

The patient will be at the centre of all of our future plans and on our journey to continuous improvement in their experience. We are now looking to develop our board by introducing a new Non-Executive Director who will bring the expertise and focus to ensure that this commitment remains firmly at the centre of our work.

We are looking for a strategic leader who is aligned to our commitment and will ensure our operation innovates and evolves with the patient in mind at every step. You must be collaborative, self-assured and able to work effectively with a board comprised of clinicians, business people and wider NHS stakeholders. You will have had experience of a board level role and have had a professional strategic role which has focused on customer/patient experience. You will be adept at understanding customer/patient needs then translating these into strategic development and action.

This will be a highly rewarding role requiring a time commitment of 18 days per year and with meetings held in Southampton.

Thank you for your interest in the role of Non-Executive Director (Patient Advocate) at UHS Pharmacy Limited.

This is a key role on the Board of Directors at a pivotal time in our development as we deliver on our strategy to provide excellent Outpatient Pharmacy services. As we navigate the challenges of maintaining this during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re discovering new risks and indeed opportunities that could have significant implications. Nonetheless, it remains critical that our patients remain at the heart of everything that we do.

The aim of the role is to bring Board-level stewardship to support the step change in how we improve the patient experience alongside the quality of the services offered. We are keen to receive applications from people who have substantial board and patient or customer experience alongside demonstrable business acumen. We would like a leader who shares our passion for first class services and is committed to increasing our impact with the NHS Trust that we serve.

UHS Pharmacy Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust. The Company was established in 2012 to provide greater efficiency in the delivery of outpatient pharmacy services. This is an exciting time to join the Board as we have wheels in motion to re-frame the medium and long term strategies and aspirations of the company. This will cement the foundations of the business and provide a sustainable platform from which we can drive growth, innovation and efficiency.

Our service provision sits somewhere between Community and Hospital Inpatient Pharmacy, with participation involving the delivery of high cost drugs in complex prescriptions increasing. This brings its own challenges, to ensure as a business we can continue to deliver benefit realisation to UHS NHS Foundation Trust and the wider NHS whilst remaining independent and compliant with statutory and regulatory requirements at all times.

To succeed at delivering class leading performance we must continue to be agile and efficient in all areas of the business to enable us to contribute effectively to the NHS HealthCare environment.

About UHS Pharmacy Limited

UHS Pharmacy Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The company was established in December 2012 and has been serving outpatients of Southampton General Hospital since Summer 2013.

The service also provides over-the-counter medicines and retail products to visitors and staff of the hospital. The Pharmacy is extremely demanding, dispensing on average 11,000 items from more than 5,000 prescriptions each month.

UHS Pharmacy Ltd currently has three Directors; two Stakeholder Representatives from its Parent UHS and one Non-Executive Director who is the Chair. As well as recruiting a further (Patient Advocate) NED we have plans to recruit a pharmacy specialist to the team as well. A Superintendent Pharmacist and Manager is in post who is responsible for ensuring that the Pharmacy is complying with the legal requirements of the GPhC. The Board of Directors also have a legal requirement in complying with GPhC as well as with the Companies Act 2006 and that required as a Subsidiary of an NHS Trust.

UHS Pharmacy Ltd has recently undergone a refit, increasing the size of dispensing space to enable increasing demand to be managed effectively. Recently implemented service and workflow improvements are delivering improved patient experience.

The future opportunities for UHS Pharmacy Ltd are significant and and the board is key to helping balance the immediate operational requirements with growth ambitions.
