Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) is now in its 32nd year as an independent, award winning and world-leading, Air Ambulance charity at the forefront of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) with a strong reputation for excellence nationally and internationally.

Costing £15.4M annually to operate, our 24/7 life-saving service is only possible thanks to the incredible generosity of the communities we serve who contribute 88% of our total income. We serve a population of 4.8 million people plus an annual transient population of 90 million, making us one of the busiest Air Ambulances in the UK, responding to over 2,500 incidents a year.

We are committed to realising our vision of an end to preventable loss of life from medical emergency and continuing to deliver our purpose of ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

We provide the highest possible care and with a CQC Outstanding rating on all five key lines of enquiry, we put the people who need us at the heart of everything we do. We continue to strive to improve the quality of service to our patients and have a research and innovation programme which helps us to adopt evidence-based practice and make service improvements.

Last year we embarked on the development of our new cultural and strategic framework ‘The KSS Way’, which outlines our vision for the future.

To enable us to achieve this we are now looking to appoint four new Trustees to join and input into our high performing organisation and who will bring a new range of skills and perspectives to add to our board.

We are specifically looking for senior experience in the aviation industry, to support the development and evolution of our aviation model to meet the needs of our organisation as it further develops.

Alongside this we are also looking for someone with medical experience and a good understanding of clinical governance. We already have a Trustee with extensive clinical critical care experience so to complement this your experience could be as a trauma surgeon, an ED clinician, a paramedic or someone with a relevant research background.

Additionally, we would like to find a candidate with experience of developing income generation strategy or managing philanthropic giving and who can bring their understanding to inform how we can continue to build and extend our fundraising activity and meet our ambitious plans.

We would also like to find someone with experience in charity law and/or charity governance and who can bolster our experience in relation to wider legal matters and risk management.

This is an exciting time to come onto our Board as KSS moves into an ambitious strategic phase to ensure we continue to provide a world-class, fast-response emergency medical care that continues to save lives.

A message from our Chair and Chief Executive

Thank you for your interest in this role of Trustee with Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS). In order to deliver on our vision of an end to preventable loss of life from medical emergency, we have identified the need to recruit four new Trustees with focuses on aviation; medicine; entrepreneurship, philanthropy and fundraising, and charity law and governance. These four Trustees will be critical in helping us realise our vision and continuing to achieve our purpose of ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

For over 32 years, KSS has provided world leading pre-hospital care to critically ill or injured patients wherever they are, whenever they need it. We are an independent charity and rely almost entirely on the generosity and commitment of our supporters. Everyone who is a part of Team KSS, no matter their role, is truly people centred, purpose drive and values led. We are fearless and tireless in fighting to save every life.

Team KSS consists of over 160 staff members and over 170 dedicated volunteers. Together we strive to deliver outstanding treatment and care to all of our patients.

We have an operating budget of £15.4M. Our general reserves, as published in our most recent accounts, stand at £13.6M, which equates to 10.6 months of expenditure. This is in line with other air ambulance charities and provides a safeguard to our operational delivery, ensuring we are there for people across Kent, Surrey, East Sussex and West Sussex, when they urgently need us.

We, like many other charities and organisations across the world, have faced extreme challenges in response to COVID-19, but we came together as one organisation to continue to deliver and fund our life-saving, critical care. During this time we continued to operate in a challenging environment without missing a single shift as well as introducing an adult critical care transfer service to help alleviate pressure on our NHS partners.

We were overwhelmed by the support from our communities in response to our Coronavirus Emergency Appeal, launched in April 2020, helping us to remain fully operational throughout the pandemic.

In March 2020 KSS became the first Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) to be rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission on all five of its key lines of enquiry: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

In 2019, KSS received an Air Ambulances UK Innovation of the Year award and in September 2020 we were awarded the Charity Times Charity of the Year Award (income more than £10M.) In September 2021 our CEO David Welch was selected as Charity Times’ Charity Leader of the Year Award 2021. In addition to these fantastic awards, KSS was awarded Large Charity at the Kent Charity Awards 2021 as well as winning Charity of the Year 2021.

We are at an exciting stage in the development of The KSS Way, our cultural and strategic framework which captures our identity and ethos and outlines our goals and vision for the future. We are currently undertaking the crucial process of implementing and celebrating The KSS Way across all of our operations and activity.

Our Board of Trustees are committed advocates of our vision and all play a vital role in helping drive us forward to realise this vision and deliver our purpose. As a Trustee of KSS you will be required to attend in person quarterly Board meetings, an annual strategy day, relevant sub-committee meetings, as well as a number of ad-hoc video conference meetings and participate in email communication.

Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) is now in its 32nd year as an independent, world-leading, Air Ambulance charity at the forefront of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) with a strong reputation for excellence nationally and internationally.

Since our inception, we have operated over 35,000 missions. We operate out of Redhill Aerodrome and are headquartered in Rochester City Airport.

At KSS, we are people centred, purpose driven and values led. Our purpose of saving lives and ensuring the best possible patient outcomes drives us every minute of every day as we proudly provide 24/7 care, 365 days a year. Team KSS is a highly skilled, diverse, and highly professional multi-disciplinary team of doctors, paramedics, dispatchers, pilots, operational support staff and fundraisers as well as communications, marketing, governance, finance and HR support staff. We also rely on the support of over 170 dedicated volunteers as well as the support we receive from the wider community.

We deliver world-class, pre-hospital emergency medical treatment and care effectively taking the emergency department and highly skilled doctors and paramedics to the scene of critical medical emergencies.

We utilise two state-of-the-art AW169 helicopters, supported by an MD902 helicopter, to transport patients to the most appropriate Major Trauma Centre or NHS hospital for their ongoing care. We also utilise our rapid response vehicles to take our team to the scene if our helicopters are unavailable.

Enabling the best possible outcomes for our patients drives us every day to improve the service we provide, to reach more patients, and to have more of an impact on our communities.

We have a research partnership with the University of Surrey, publishing 22 papers since 2016. Collaborating and sharing best practice with Air Ambulances around the world, we are at the forefront of HEMS research with a strong reputation for excellence, both nationally and internationally. Most recently, two studies by KSS have topped the ratings on Altmetrics, the online portal that monitors how much attention newly published research is receiving. Research into incidence of Hyperoxia amongst trauma patients receiving pre-hospital anaesthesia and a study scoping the pre-hospital management of penetrating neck injuries have been shared globally.

We are incredibly proud of everyone who is a part of Team KSS and who are all very committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients and providing the best possible experience for our volunteers and supporters.  Our caring value is embedded in all we do, which includes ensuring our staff team feel supported, engaged, inspired and valued.

KSS believes strongly in ensuring that the strategic direction of the organisation is coproduced by our staff, volunteers, supporters and stakeholders to ensure it captures the passion, commitment and world-leading nature of our organisation.  As such, in 2019/2020, we began a long-term process of staff engagement and consultation to develop our new cultural and strategic framework for our organisation – The KSS Way.  Every year we undertake our annual staff survey which identifies a KSS action plan and timeline which allows us to ensure staff views are heard and actioned.

Care Quality Commission (CQC)

In March 2020, the CQC published their inspection report of KSS following their visit in January 2020.  KSS received an outstanding rating overall, as well as being rated as outstanding on all five key lines of enquiry – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. We were genuinely overwhelmed by the scale of this achievement and are so very proud of each and every member of Team KSS.

Our staff, volunteers, Trustees, donors and supporters have all played their part in this remarkable achievement.  This was a defining moment in our history and our outstanding rating provides us with a strong platform from which to grow, innovate and make even more of a difference to the KSS communities that we serve.

Our Service

Delivering our critical care teams quickly enough to meet the critical needs of our patients is essential and is best achieved through the use of our state-of-the-art AW169 helicopters. Alongside this, the rapid identification of the needs of the patients coupled with the provision of appropriate advanced interventions to meet those needs, is how our service enables the best possible outcomes for our patients.
