Trustees x3 Electrical Safety First

Electrical Safety First logo

Electrical Safety First (ESF), a campaigning charity that aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by electricity in UK homes, is seeking three new Trustees with strategic expertise in digital or organisation transformation, HR and communications.

  • Location: Near Waterloo, London
  • Salary: Voluntary
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Monday 11th July 2022

The UK has set climate change targets, which will mean an inevitable change to our housing stock and the vehicles we drive. Our heating and our transport will see a rapid electrification, and we must ensure that this does not come at the expense of consumer safety. The energy crisis and the growth of online marketplaces are also adding to the risk, as consumers try to save money.

How consumers use electrical products, where they purchase them from, and who they use to install a product are critical decisions that have a significant influence on electrical safety, making consumer education fundamental on this journey.

Electrical Safety First (ESF) is a campaigning charity that aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by electricity in UK homes.

We do this by working closely with government, the electrical industry, manufacturers, retailers and consumer safety organisations to improve safety regulation and standards. We run media and digital campaigns to share advice and guidance with consumers that will help them to stay safe in their homes.

We campaign on issues that include housing standards, regulation of the sale of electrical goods on online marketplaces, protecting vulnerable people in unsafe homes, preventing electrical fires, and considering the future safe use of electricity in the home. We also run an annual consumer survey that looks at general attitudes towards electrical safety, and we carry out research on specific areas of interest, including product safety, housing, electric vehicles and how we will use electricity in the future.

Our consumer campaigns, delivered through the media and online via our social media channels, aim to increase awareness of the dangers of electricity, and encourage people to make the simple changes that will help them to stay safe in their homes. We also publish reports on key electrical safety issues to provide evidence and recommendations for change, and use our technical expertise to influence standards, regulations and legislation.

It’s a hugely exciting time to be involved with ESF with the rise in the use of electricity in smart homes, electric vehicles and the drive for zero carbon solutions. Our work has never been more important in protecting people and helping to make the world a safer place.

We have recently recruited new staff to increase our capacity in technical, data analysis and digital and social media. We are stepping up our capacity to drive change, and have strengthened our communications and policy & public affairs teams to further raise our profile through integrated campaigns.

Our board has also undergone a transformation. The succession of Sarah Frost to become Chair, and with completed terms creating some vacancies, there is an opportunity for three new Trustees to bring fresh energy and inspiration.

Welcome to Electrical Safety First.

I am delighted that you are considering one of the three trustee roles which have become vacant this year.

Our charity leads the agenda on electrical safety across the UK and we are looking to recruit trustees who are excited about making a tangible difference to people’s lives.

As a board of trustees, we are committed to ensuring that our messages on electrical safety get through to everyone and particularly to the most vulnerable in society, who may be disproportionately impacted.

With the advent of net carbon zero targets, smart home technology, electric vehicles and the challenges of the rising cost of living, we can only see the importance of electrical safety rising in the coming years. This will give the charity multiple opportunities to campaign and to lobby for changes to both legislation and product safety regulation.

If you feel you have the skills we are seeking and you are aligned with our charitable purpose, then I would encourage you to apply for one of these roles.

We are looking for individuals who are committed to making a difference through active engagement at meetings and welcome applications from all potential candidates.

I look forward to meeting you and hearing what you feel you can offer us.

Sarah Frost
