Trustees x 2 (Legal, Marketing & Communications) Royal Medical Benevolent Fund (RMBF)

Join the board of a highly-respected national charity dedicated to providing support for doctors, medical students and their families at times of crisis and great need. This includes financial support, money advice and information when it is most needed due to age, ill health, disability, and bereavement.

  • Location: Wimbledon, London. Board meetings in central London with videoconference facilities available as needed
  • Salary: Unremunerated with reasonable expenses
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Monday 5th September 2022

The Royal Medical Benevolent Fund (RMBF) was founded as the Medical Benevolent Fund in 1836. The medical world has changed enormously since the RMBF was first established, and, as the medical profession has changed, so has the RMBF.

The RMBF supports doctors and medical students at all stages of their career and beyond. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the major impact it has had on the medical profession, the RMBF’s services have never been more necessary. Our help ranges from financial assistance in the form of grants and loans, to wellbeing and psychotherapeutic support.

The RMBF is committed to leading the way in providing help to members of the medical profession and their dependants at times of crisis and serious need. Between 2020-2021, 270 beneficiaries received financial help with a total of over £420,000 paid out in grants. Our online advice hubs and wellbeing support service had over 130,000 views.

The RMBF has a long-standing history of providing help and support to doctors and medical students. We are looking to build on our success and raise the profile and awareness of the charity. With this in mind, we are looking for two new Trustees to join the board.

Specifically, we are looking for people who bring expertise in legal, marketing and communications, social media and public relations. An interest in and respect for the mission and values of the RMBF is critical. We are looking to ensure our board represents the diversity of the profession we support and our society. We encourage people from diverse and different backgrounds to get in touch. We also encourage first time Trustees to apply as we offer training, mentoring and provide an encouraging and open board culture.

The board meets four times a year in Central London, often in the late afternoon. Videoconferencing facilities are available as needed. We have five sub committees: Finance, Compliance, Staffing, Nominations and our Grants and Awards Committee. We also host an annual strategy away day as well as a larger annual general meeting, and a dedicated volunteers’ day. We expect the time commitment to be up to a day a month and this is inclusive of preparation for meetings, reading board papers, communication with staff and Trustees and attendance at events.

This is an opportunity to contribute to the RMBF, as we look to create a new strategy and evolve our essential work. This is a time for the charity to have an even greater impact and to protect and support the needs of doctors and medical students who work tirelessly to help and support everyone in our society.

The RMBF is the UK charity for doctors, medical students and their families.

We provide financial support, money advice and information when it is most needed due to age, ill health, disability and bereavement. In a typical year, our beneficiaries range from young children to those well into their nineties or even older. Our approach is to provide a package of help to ensure dignity and quality of life.

Help that makes a real difference

The RMBF provides support for doctors and their families through all stages of their career and beyond. Our help ranges from financial assistance in the form of grants and loans, to wellbeing and psychotherapeutic support.

Nobody is immune to misfortune and each individual’s need is different. Each applicant is assessed according to their needs by our Grants and Awards Committee and decisions are made quickly and in confidence to create a tailored package of support.

Guided by the profession

The majority of our board and our volunteers come from a medical background. This means that as an organisation we understand the unique pressures facing doctors on a day to day basis. Our volunteers come from all areas in the medical profession and help to ensure that the RMBF is delivering the best support possible.

Funded by medical families

The RMBF relies on voluntary donations. The money we raise to support doctors and their families comes from fellow doctors and their families. Without the help of our generous donors we could not continue to provide vital support to the medical profession.
