This is an opportunity to join a vibrant and innovative charity whose social purpose is to inform, educate and safeguard young people against gaming and gambling harm.

  • Location: Meetings held in virtually, face to face and hybrid
  • Salary: Unremunerated
  • Closing date: CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS

The Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) is an award-winning charity with a social purpose to inform, educate and safeguard future generations against gaming and gambling harms.

Through our portfolio of evidence-led education programmes, we provide free training and resources for teachers, youth workers, practitioners, universities, faith leaders and health professionals. All of our resources, training and education programmes have been independently scrutinised, challenged, evaluated and quality marked by a wide range of organisations.

YGAM has experienced a period of rapid growth and success and is reaching the end of its current 3-year strategic plan in a strong position to launch into a new phase of development and growth. As we embark on a new strategy, we have just appointed a new CEO, Dr Jane Rigbye who has extensive leadership experience and now we are looking to appoint a number of new Trustees to join us at this exciting time. YGAM is a truly unique organisation to be part of. The culture is entrepreneurial, supportive, and collegial – the team and board really care about one another and want to make a difference. We have a relentless drive to do things better, proven by our raft of accreditations from ISO9001, to NCVO Trusted Charity Level2, through to Investors in People Gold.

This is a key time to join our skilled board of trustees, and support them to set out and drive the agenda for our new strategic cycle. We are looking for a number of individuals to join us who bring a wealth of diverse knowledge and expertise. We are looking for a range of skills including financial expertise in particular with audit experience.

Given our work has expanded to include gaming and esports, we are interested in individuals with experience in esports and gaming. In addition to this, we are looking for people with experience at a strategic level of working with ex-offenders, the justice sector, diverse communities, social care, healthcare and in deprived areas and people with expertise in fundraising especially trusts, grants and foundations. We would also benefit from people with lived experience.

We ask our Trustees to commit to approximately 1 day per month which is comprised of 6 trustee meetings a year (around 2 to 2.5 hours each), reading papers, conversations with the staff and other trustees, and attending training and events (when it is safe to do so). We offer training as part of our 1 day induction and we have refresher training once a year. Meetings are held in a mixture of face to face with flexibility about location, virtually, and in a hybrid fashion. When we do have meetings face to face we are very flexible on location and ensure that the venue is fully accessible.

We encourage applications from people at all stages of their career, from all backgrounds, communities and industries, and are committed to having a team that is made up of diverse skills, experiences and abilities.

If you think you don’t yet have all the skills and experience to be a trustee then don’t worry, YGAM has a culture where we support and develop all staff and volunteers from induction onwards. If you think you have something to offer and could learn the rest we’d love to hear from you.

In return you will get further personal development, reimbursable expenses, opportunities to make strategic decisions and develop new skills, opportunities to network with senior professionals, influence to shape innovative projects and the chance to improve health and well-being of people and communities.

A warm welcome from the YGAM team, and thank you for your interest in the Trustee role for our ambitious, authentic, and award-winning education charity. This is a perfect moment to join us, as we conclude a period of rapid growth, and begin planning for our next strategic cycle.

There is good reason for our confidence and enthusiasm. This is a real milestone year for the charity. Our new CEO Jane Rigbye joined our incredibly talented team this month, and brings expertise, new ideas and drive. Furthermore, as we start developing our new strategic plan our new trustees will be on board and have opportunity to feed into the process, shape our direction, and play a part in the delivery.

A governance review was completed around a year ago, and we have made great progress, ensuring board discussions are focused, decision making is clear, all voices are heard and valued, and there is space for thought leadership and forward thinking.

The culture within the YGAM family is exceptional. Putting aside the independent accreditations, which include Investors in People Gold, and the NCVO level 2 Trusted Charity mark, the senior leadership, staff team and board are on the pulse; supportive, collaborative and have belief in our social purpose. Trustees are expected to get involved between board meetings, maximising their personal skills, experience, and insight, but this also provides an opportunity for personal development, and satisfaction. We are committed to living and breathing our values, making inclusion and diversity a natural part of YGAM affairs, and provide mentoring and regular touch points.

We are proud of our achievements to date, but by no means complacent. Our diverse programs are maturing, with widening reach and impact, and together we are passionate about educating and safeguarding future generations.

Being a trustee at YGAM is an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of those who may be more vulnerable to the harms that can arise from gaming and gambling. If this is the challenge you are looking for, we wish you good luck with your application!

The Facts

At YGAM, we strongly believe education is essential to prevent gambling and gaming harms. Young generations now grow up entwined in the digital world, always just a few clicks away from the online galaxy of gaming and gambling.

We engage with the education sector daily and we are constantly listening to the needs of teachers, practitioners and young people.

It is very clear from these conversations that teachers and practitioners need and appreciate YGAM’s resources more than ever.

The feedback we receive and the insight gleaned from external evaluations is overwhelmingly positive. There is an enormous demand for information on gambling and gaming harm.
