Together Active seeks new trustees with experience of the voluntary sector, community development and strategic communications to help more people across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire to access physical activity and enjoy its benefits.
Together Active, one of 43 Active Partnerships across the UK, works across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent increasing access to physical activity and tackling inequalities that prevent people from being able to lead happy, healthy, fulfilling lives. We are a registered charity with professional staff team and a new strategy launching in the next few months. We work for improved health, wellbeing with our future priorities focused on developing social inclusion and enhancing the health and wellbeing of our local communities.
In 2020 we transitioned to become a registered charity and with the recent appointments of a new Chief Executive and an excellent new Chair, the Board of Trustees is going through a period of transformation and development. We are looking for new Trustees who can support our journey to greater board effectiveness by being highly engaged, offering a good balance of strategic support and challenge to the staff team, and ensuring that our decision making is grounded in evidence, local experience and inclusivity.
It is a very exciting time to be joining us as we are about to launch a new strategy and want to maximise and build our board effectiveness and engagement. Through this we can achieve greater impact in helping the people of Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire to be more active and reap the physical and psychological benefits.
As well as being engaged with the work of the organisation, we are looking for people with the following skills and experience who can help us to meet our strategic objectives and ensure good governance. Experience of one or more of the following is essential:
We are seeking to broaden the range of perspectives and views on the board and greatly value experience of living or working with others who have suffered from lack of access to activities that allow movement and the benefits that can be gained. If you understand the barriers to people being able to move and be healthy, mentally and physically, we strongly urge you to come forward and be part of changing the system.
If you live, work, understand, or have knowledge and connections of government and the public infrastructure in Stoke-on-Trent, your insights would also be extremely valuable.
In total we anticipate the time commitment to be no more than the equivalent of 1 day per month and expect excellent attendance at meeting and regular engagement with communications outside of meetings.
The commitment currently includes 4 board meetings per year (2 hours each) and we will ask you to join one of our committees (Governance, Finance or Equality, Diversity & Inclusion) which also meet quarterly. In addition, there is an annual strategy day and ad hoc engagements with the organisation and staff team.
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Trustee at Together Active. Together Active is a registered charity that works across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to tackle inequality head on. We are a charity that believes strongly in the power of physical activity to enhance choice and opportunity for people so that they are included and not pushed to the margins of society.
But we know we can’t do this on our own and we are only one piece of a complex, challenging system. Everything we do is about collaboration and partnership and we work with a range of organisations from schools, to small community groups to local authorities and universities.
Together Active is at a critical point in its journey. We became a registered charity in 2020, appointed a new Chief Executive in July 2022 and a new Chair in January 2023. All of these steps have been positioning us to be front and centre in tackling the huge challenges facing Staffordshire’s communities particularly Stoke-on-Trent.
Our new trustees will be brave and creative in addressing these challenges and you’ll have a genuine commitment to ensuring that the role of physical activity in reducing inequality is recognised and valued at strategic level. You will understand our county and champion our people.
Your talent and skills are what we’re interested in and there are no barriers to how you evidence that. You may have developed your skills through a range of formal or informal routes. We want to know about how your experiences. We particularly encourage applications from people who live in the communities where we work. If you share our values and are energised by our vision, we want to hear from you.
Chair of Board
We are an independent charity and the Active Partnership for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. We work to use physical activity as a tool to improve the lives of some of the most overlooked and unheard populations by working across three priority areas:
Our work focuses on population groups who experience one or more of the following:
We work in collaboration with system partners and communities across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to achieve our vision of designing out inactivity.
Our core focus is on tackling inequalities that prevent people from being able to lead happy, healthy, fulfilling lives. These inequalities are often deeply embedded systemic and structural issues and are less about individual choice. We work across the entire landscape of systems and support services to ensure that physical activity is designed out and there is not an opportunity for people to be excluded from activity. Our ambition is big, and we have a dedicated team of 13 staff that are supporting us to achieve our mission.
Together Active is currently going through a significant period of transformation and is seeking to shift its approach away from a programme-based focus to become place-based in its working. The charity has made a commitment to investing much of its resource in Stoke-on-Trent for at least the next three years and is ambitious to stimulate systemic change. We want that change to be driven directly by the people who are currently left out of the systems that should exist to improve their outcomes. This will involve consultation, action research, and relationship building, so that we can develop a deep and authentic understanding of the individual needs of communities. Our approach will be inherently iterative as we develop, adapt and learn, but all moving towards our vision of designing out inactivity in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.
We understand that different members of the community have different access needs and have made some modifications to the way we do business to accommodate people from diverse communities and abilities. We offer the following amenities:
Together Active are also currently working to gain a Disability Confident Mark. As part of our funding, we are assessed under Tier 3 requirements of the Code for Sport Governance and are Race Code accredited until May 2024.
22% of staff identify as being neurodiverse
33% of staff have a history of mental distress
