Trustees Students’ Union at Bournemouth University

We are seeking passionate individuals with experience in charity governance, human resources, or higher education to help our Union in meeting its ambitious strategy and ensure our students get the most from their university experience.

  • Location: Students’ Union, The Student Centre, Bournemouth University, Poole BH12 5BB, UK
  • Salary: Unenumerated
  • Closing date: CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS

The Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) is an independent charity representing around 19,000 Bournemouth University students.

We are democratically led by four elected Sabbatical Officers who advocate for their peers and are supported by a talented team of staff and volunteers who work to make the student experience as great as possible.

Whether it is through our clubs and societies, our commercial venues, or by providing advice and representation, we are here for all students. We exist to help them get the most from their university experience.

Over the last four years, we have undergone a transformative change programme and have advanced our student services to new levels of quality. We seek two trustees to help us continue striving for our students.

This is an exciting time to join SUBU as a trustee – we are in the second year of our new strategic plan and making good progress along our strategic objectives. We campaign on issues students care about, from the cost-of-living crisis to accommodation issues to international student support.

A trustee will also gain experience supporting a charity with a multi-million-pound commercial portfolio.

We are looking for trustees with experience in charity governance, higher education, and/or human resources. Any knowledge of environmental sustainability would also benefit but is not essential.

The time commitment is 9-10 engagements a year. This consists of four board meetings a year, each lasting 2 hours, and attendance of one sub-committee.

We would like to welcome first-time trustees and encourage anyone who feels they could bring something to our board to apply. We will provide training and guidance to help all trustees to succeed. We are especially welcoming applications from candidates from Black, Asian, and other ethnic communities currently underrepresented in leadership positions.

Welcome from the SUBU President

Dear Candidate,

I am delighted that you are interested in joining the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) as a Trustee.

SUBU is a vibrant independent charity, driven by a shared passion to enhance student life at Bournemouth University, create a feeling of belonging and vibrancy in our campuses and leave a unique long-lasting mark on each student’s journey.

Our vision is to build the best university experience for our students, their community, and their future. We are transforming the student experience by actively supporting, representing, and empowering our students to reach their full potential and make their dreams a reality.

We do this by providing wide-ranging opportunities for students, enriching their academic experience and helping them navigate a complicated world of emerging technology and innovation while offering extracurricular opportunities and experiences that promote health, professional aspiration, and academic success. Opportunities include over 80 active clubs and societies, a vibrant Volunteering Hub, accredited advice service, liberation and community networks, Union Elections as well as paid work opportunities across our commercial venues and communication campaigns.

SUBU offers a space where student members can share their aspirations and interests, find a supportive network, develop their skills and prepare for the world of work while shaping the Union and supporting their own future development. Our commercial venues, including the Student Shop, Dylan’s Kitchen & Bar, the Student Centre Café and The Old Fire Station, provide students with unique, exciting and safe social spaces, ensuring student life at BU is truly unique and inclusive. The profit generated is reinvested in our wide range of support, events, campaigns and opportunities on offer at SUBU.

As a democratic organisation, we pride ourselves in representing over 19,000 students across our campuses and as a Trustee, you will be a part of a community that represents our students’ voices and campaign for the welfare of all our students. We also have an excellent relationship with Bournemouth University, working closely in partnership to improve the student experience.

We are an exciting dynamic organisation and continually develop our services to stay relevant and engaged with our students. Therefore, we want to recruit passionate individuals who are comfortable with a fast-paced and continuously changing environment. This is a platform to use your experience to support the growth, strategically guide and inspire the Union to further success.

If you are interested in becoming a Trustee at SUBU, please read the information provided or contact Peridot Partners if you have any further questions.

About Students’ Union at Bournemouth University

SUBU is an independent charity representing around 19,000 Bournemouth University students. We ensure students get the very best of their university experience.

All students who attend Bournemouth University are automatically part of the Students’ Union, and our vision is to have a positive impact on every single one of their journeys.

This doesn’t just mean providing support on matters regarding their course or acting as a place to come for help regarding money and housing (although that’s part of it); we offer a whole host of activities to optimise students’ time here.

SUBU helps students develop new skills, enhance their employability and – most importantly – have fun. Whether that’s through joining one of our clubs or societies, becoming a student rep and improving the quality of their course, hosting a radio show, writing for our student media, ‘Nerve’, or giving a helping hand with SUBU Volunteering. We coordinate and facilitate over 50 volunteering opportunities each term with over 80 groups open for students to join – there truly is something for everybody.
