Trustees x 2 SJOG

Join the board of a high-performing, ambitious, award-winning charity that is financially sound, well-run and innovatively changing social care and the provision of safe houses throughout the UK.

  • Location: Darlington
  • Salary: Unremunerated with reasonable expenses paid
  • Closing date: CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS

We are a growing and ambitious organisation with a range of services across England that support people with experience of homelessness, modern day slavery, disabled people, autistic people and older communities, primarily funded through contracts with local authorities, Integrated Care Boards and UK government departments. What makes the charity special is the ambition that we have for the people we are here to support.

We have a great heritage, 140 years and counting, built upon our key value of hospitality. SJOG is here to help, and that’s how we capture our purpose. Every day we say “Come in. You are most welcome. How can we help?

We have experienced such a pace of growth already in four years but also a phase of innovation, culture and infrastructure transformation and high-quality improvement. This has resulted in a charity that has become the leading provider of safe houses for people subject to modern day slavery, whilst growing and maintaining our long history of providing support to disabled people and providing specialist dementia care, alongside our home services. In this time, our organisation has opened 25 new services all of which are performing at a high level and has enabled our organisation to go from strength to strength wherein we are financially sound and have created a values-led environment where people want to work and contribute to our future.

In 2021, we launched our new “Doing Good” strategy with our 12 strategic goals. We’re now looking for two new trustees who can bring skills and experience to a strong board and help us target the £25 million income of the charity to deliver the maximum benefit.

As a trustee, it’s important to embody the question “how can I help”? We are particularly looking for people with extensive knowledge and expertise in:

  • IT, technology, digital transformation
  • Data analytics
  • Marketing and communications

Our trustees will be strategic, curious and ambitious, with a desire to play a part in our next period of growth and development as we look to opening new, innovative and different services that have a high-quality impact and support our communities.

We want our trustees to reflect the people and communities we are active in, with lived experience of what our communities experience — either personally or through a loved one — including experience of social care, dementia, disability, autism, homelessness, and/or modern day slavery. Although we have religious roots as an organisation, you don’t have to be religious to join the board — we are looking for people who share our values.

The board meets four times a year for c. 3 hours in Darlington, however, we are open to exploring a new venue for in-person meetings. One of these meetings is our strategy away which is held in a hybrid fashion. Our trustees will join one of our subcommittees — Quality Committee or Finance, Audit and Risk Committee — which meet four times a year and tend to be held virtually. We expect with reading, calls, informal conversations and other ad hoc activities, the time commitment will be up to 1 day a month.

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in SJOG. We’re delighted you’re thinking about becoming a trustee of what I think is a special charity.

SJOG is here to help, and that’s how we capture our purpose. We’ve been on a bit of a journey over the past 4 years, but we’re now in a really good position to help more people. The charity is financially sound but, more importantly, is growing its reach and delivering high-quality services to people who need help at this point in their lives. We’ve added 25 new services over the past 4 years, and we are now in 52 communities being of help to disabled people, older people, and, increasingly, people who are experiencing homelessness or have been trafficked or subject to modern day slavery. The policy areas that we cover are diverse, but at our heart, we are a charity where people support people, and every day we say “Welcome. Come on in. How can we be of help?”

Our growth has been supported by contracts with central government departments and through relationships with local authorities and integrated health boards. We are thriving, but in our 140-year-old history, the need has never been greater, and there is more to do.

We are ambitious for the people we are here to support, and I’m hoping that if you are too, then you’ll consider applying for this role.

Emma Gibbons
Chair of Trustees

About SJOG

Our purpose is to provide people with the skills and the support to gain control of their own lives.

We believe that every person has the right to be supported in a way that does not degrade their dignity.

We don’t have one standard approach but creatively provide help and support to people in the way they want and to meet people’s needs, wishes and aspirations.

Every day we say ‘Come in, you are very welcome’, and every day we are inspired by the strength, humanity and hospitality of the people that we work alongside.

Over the last number of years, we have grown rapidly, including opening 25 new services, operating in 52 communities in the UK and becoming the largest provider of safe houses for people subject to modern day slavery and trafficking.

We have a rich heritage and are part of an international family of 500,000 coworkers, working in 500 centres of care in 50 countries and impacting over 7 million lives every year.

We run a number of key services across the England, including:

SJOG Disability Services

We have a 140-year history of supporting disabled people to live how and where they choose.

We provide expert care and support to meet the needs and support the aspirations of people with learning disabilities, physical impairments, autism and complex needs.

SJOG Older Communities

SJOG has a long history of providing specialist dementia care and nursing care for older people.

We currently work in partnership with a number of religious orders and congregations to support them in the care of their elderly members and the management of their care homes.

SJOG Homeless Services

In times of crisis, we provide a place of safety and specialist support. People are helped to rebuild their lives, learn new skills and move on to lead fulfilling lives.

We provide housing, and whilst important, we do so much more than this. Working with health colleagues, our service in central London tackles drug-resistant tuberculosis and offers a hospital at home to those without one.

SJOG Modern Day Slavery

SJOG’s Modern Slavery Services provide accommodation and outreach services to support victims of trafficking or modern day slavery. Safe-houses provide a safe space and a supportive environment with specialist support to help people rehabilitate and recover from their experiences.

Working in partnership with The Salvation Army as part of the Government’s Modern Slavery Victim Care Contract (MSVCC), teams across the country support people to reflect, recover and rebuild their lives.

Opening 20 new services between 2020 and February 2022, we meet an ever-growing need. SJOG is currently the UK’s largest provider of safe houses for people subject to modern day slavery and trafficking and provides a voice for this marginalised and vulnerable group.

Our values

Hospitality — is offering a welcome to those in any kind of need. Every day, we say ‘Come in, you are very welcome’ and every day we are inspired by the strength, humanity and hospitality of the people that we work alongside.

Compassion — the support that we offer is underpinned by the active gift of kindness, caring and a demonstration of being willing to help.

Respect — we respect the dignity of each person, to choose how they live and our support and care does not degrade a person’s inherent dignity.
