The RAF Museum is a National Museum and charity, with two public sites located in the Midlands and London. Attracting over 850,000 visitors per year, the Museum’s vision is to inspire everyone with the RAF story, the people who shape it, and its place in our lives.

The Museum shares these stories through its collection of 1.3M objects that includes aircraft, medals, and uniforms through to oral history recordings, archives, and film, and moving personal mementos such as lucky mascots and letters home.

Led and run by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, the Museum is looking for two new trustees to join its board.

Who we are

The RAF Museum engages with visitors onsite, offsite, and online through its collection that represents over a hundred years of RAF history and looks forwards to the future.

Following the transformation of the London site to mark the Centenary of the RAF in 2018, plans are progressing for a major development programme at its Midlands site.

Due to complete in 2027, the plans comprise an inspiring engagement, learning, and skills programme, enabled by new exhibitions sharing the RAF’s contemporary story, including cyber and space; new learning spaces and woodland landscaping; and a collections hub that will open up the Museum’s stored collection to the public for the first time.

Co-created with stakeholders and the public, this next exciting phase will deepen and extend the Museum’s reach, ensure its relevance, and support its organisational resilience.

About the role

Committed to ensuring it remains relevant and responsive to its audience, the RAF Museum is seeking two forward-thinking, dynamic trustees who align with its vision and values. Keen for this role to appeal to anyone with a general interest in museums and learning, the RAF Museum is looking for people who support the social and educational value of museums and the role they play in society. The board provides active leadership and support, and trustees’ impact as ambassadors, both internally with the team and externally with stakeholders and communities, is profound.

The board meets four times a year and trustees are also expected to join one of its sub-committees. The board and sub-committees normally aim to meet in person at our sites. This gives the opportunity to meet staff and volunteers and understand the visitor experience, but trustees are also able to join meetings virtually if they prefer. Papers are circulated with ample time for trustees to prepare, and an annual strategy away day gives an opportunity for the board to focus on future priorities and planning. Trustees are also invited to attend events and receptions throughout the year.

  • Major Projects and Programmes
  • Staffing and Remuneration
  • Nominations and Governance.

The board is committed to engaging visitors of all ages and backgrounds with the RAF story, connecting with communities and partners, and inspiring people with the RAF Museum’s dynamic, diverse, and collaborative culture.

Who we are looking for

Forward-facing in its approach, the board is looking for individuals with strong people skills and life experiences who believe in the power of museums to change lives. Appreciating the value of museums, they will embrace the significance of engaging public spaces for communities to celebrate shared identities while valuing diversity and difference.

With the board focused on the Museum’s continued development and exceptional visitor experience, it is seeking people with a passion for extending a warm welcome to all its audiences, who would question, challenge, and support in equal measure. Applicants will want to contribute to a people – and learning-focused organisation, committed to remaining relevant today and fit for tomorrow. It is not necessary to be an RAF, aviation, or history expert to join the team.

The Museum is proud of what it has achieved with regard to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), but is not complacent. Ensuring that the board, staff, and visitors reflect the broader UK population is paramount and trustees recognise the benefits that a variety of thinking styles bring to the organisation. People from global majority backgrounds, those with disabilities, and/or neurodivergent people are under-represented on the board, so it particularly encourages people from these groups to apply. The RAF Museum is similarly excited to invite first-time trustees to the board and is keen to support people to learn about the trustee role.

The RAF Museum is looking for trustees who will act as visitor advocates and bring strategic leadership to the Museum’s EDI policy. Trustees will align with RAF Museum’s values and vision while bringing their skillset to shape and guide its Strategy 2030.

About the RAF Museum

The Royal Air Force Museum was established as a legacy of the RAF’s fiftieth anniversary, opening the London (Hendon) site in 1972. From 1979, the Museum also managed the Cosford Aerospace Museum for the MOD, which had been in operation since 1974. The Museum also has two off-site stores, one in Stafford and the other within RAF Cosford.

The RAF Museum is a National Museum, an executive Non-Departmental Public Body of Government, and a charity. It is funded through government grant-in-aid, and its commercial and fundraising income. Entrance to the Museum is free of charge.

The Museum is committed to its national role to care for and share its collection of 1.3m objects, holding them in trust for the people of the UK. It explores significant stories internationally while being a true community partner in its localities.

As an educational charity, whether visitors are engaging with its displays, taking part in discussion and debate, studying the archive, or enjoying a rest in the cafés, there are opportunities for inspiration in every corner of the Museum.

During the last strategic plan, the Museum concentrated its efforts on being outward-focused and people-centred. Its Strategy 2030 builds on this engagement, harnessing the stories of RAF people and the collections to engage, inspire and encourage learning for generations to come.

The Museum plans to engage with more people and a broader range of people. New exhibitions exploring the stories of Bomber Command launch at both sites in May 2023, with further new displays on the Inter-War period opening at the London site in November 2023.

In the meantime, plans for major transformation at the Midlands site in 2027 are progressing to plan, with over half of the £22M fundraising target secured. An outreach, learning, and skills programme will feed into the development of immersive exhibitions sharing the RAF’s contemporary story, including cyber and space.

Bespoke learning spaces and woodland landscaping will provide inspiring context and a new collections hub will enable the Museum’s stored collections to be shared with the public for the first time.

The development will support the Museum’s commitment to achieving Carbon Net Zero by 2030, and both its journey, and the RAF’s environmental commitment, will be shared onsite and online with visitors.

  • Step-free access to the building, accessible workstations (e.g. desk, office), and step-free access to all key meeting rooms and toilets.
  • Accessibility dogs are welcomed.
  • Papers and materials can be presented in different formats if needed.
  • A sign language interpreter can be accessed for an interview.
  • Working patterns and locations can be adjusted.
