Liverpool Hope Students’ Union (SU) exists to represent the 8,000 students at Liverpool Hope University. Our vision is to ensure that we provide the best student experience, inspire success and contribute to positive change.
At Liverpool Hope Students’ Union we have made significant steps forward over the past year. We undertook a fundamental restructure in which we went, almost literally, back to a blank piece of paper. We have recruited a new Chief Executive and are implementing pioneering ideas to create an SU which is truly responsive to the needs of our students today. The changes we have made have seen a significant rise in engagement in our forums, elections, clubs, societies and sports teams.
Despite the challenges COVID-19 has presented we have a healthy financial position and have a more stable platform to operate from.
We are now thinking ahead to the future. We want to build a strategy that can take advantage of the positivity and momentum we have as well as create the sustainability to maintain long-term excellence.
We need three Trustees to join us to support our continued progression. Expertise in the following areas would add most value to our board: HR; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; Governance and Risk Management; Higher Education or Students’ Union experience and experience of managing and scrutinising budgets.
Between our three roles, we require at least one person with prior board experience. We are open to first-time Trustees within our other two Trustee roles.
We welcome and encourage candidates from all backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented communities, to apply.

As the President here at Liverpool Hope Students’ Union and as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome you to Liverpool Hope SU. I am very excited to present this opportunity to you and I am sure you will see what a unique opportunity this is.
As a Union we have made significant steps forward over the past year and this is a hugely exciting time for us as we continue on our journey of development and progression. For two years, we have been consulting with our members to identify what they want and need from their Union and it is this feedback that has shaped our goals and strategy.
Recently, our Union underwent a fundamental restructure in which we went, almost literally, back to a blank piece of paper. We took new and pioneering ideas both of our own and from across the sector to create a Union which is responsive to the needs of our students today. We have seen an explosion in engagement in our forums, elections, clubs, societies and sports teams and a new vitality arise at Hope.
We were recognised by the National Union of Students as the Small and Specialist Union of the year at their 2012 awards and in 2015 our Student feedback ranked Liverpool Hope Students’ Union as the second most improved in the country.
But what does this mean to you? As a prospective applicant for an external trustee position you are considering an opportunity to help mould and develop a Union as it takes its first steps on a new three-year strategic vision. You are also accepting the challenge of helping us exceed legal compliance and governance issues.
If you believe you have the skills, experience and passion to enable this vision to be realised, I truly hope you will apply to join our board of trustees.
I look forward to receiving your application very soon and please do not hesitate to get in contact with me if you have any further questions regarding the role.
Chair of the Trustee Board and President
Our Vision: Ensuring the best student experience; inspiring success and positive change. By, for and of the students – there is no better way to encapsulate our purpose. We are a membership led organisation driven by our core values:
Our students can represent themselves, and their needs and concerns, through our flourishing Forum system, Course Representative programme and directly to their Sabbatical Officers. Our Sabbatical Officers use this feedback to direct their campaigning and lobbying to the University, Local Community, Government and NUS.
Through our Advice Service, we provide advice and signposting as well as advocacy for students facing University Academic and Disciplinary Appeals , and a wide variety of other issues.

We provide a wealth of opportunities for students to enjoy their time at Hope, gain new friends and skills, and to boost their employment prospects through leadership and volunteering. We have a vital and active Athletics Union and over 45 Clubs and Societies from Drama and Music to Basketball and LGBT+.
But we could be doing so much more. External Trustees bring crucial insight and expertise to ensure we have the structure and strategy to always do better for our members.
