English Touring Theatre is a registered charity in England and Wales, creating theatre of outstanding quality, imagination and ambition; work which interrogates and celebrates contemporary England and reflects the diversity of our nation. Our work enables people to ask challenging questions of them and others.

We stage a balance of new and classic work, to make theatre that is imaginative, responsive, and alive: sparking dialogue and fostering connectivity. Each year we work with around 10 venue partners, tour to 25 towns and cities and reach an average audience of 75,000 people.

English Touring Theatre is a limited company and a registered charity and receives significant funding from Arts Council England and is a National Portfolio Organisation.

At the heart of our practice is a drive to entertain, engage, challenge and inspire. This is an exciting time to join ETT. Our board is an active body; engaged and committed to English Touring Theatre’s ongoing strategic development. This is reflected in our newly re-shaped business plan, which focuses on being a touring company that is flexible, responsive and looking towards an increasingly democratic and open future. We have ambitions to be a leading touring company for the digital age, producing new work and collaboration models which can deepen and widen relationships with our audiences, communities, participants and artists.

About the role

We are now looking to recruit new Trustees to drive our organisation to achieve these new strategic goals and diversify and strengthen the board. We seek candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, and as per our commitment to equality and diversity, applications from Black, Asian and global majority candidates and candidates with disabilities are particularly encouraged.

Our new Trustees will possess substantial experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

  • Strategic HR
  • Commercial/Legal
  • Digital Innovation
  • Audience Engagement

Applicants who can bring in new ideas and stimulus from sectors other than the culture sector would be welcome. We are particularly interested in encouraging applications from across the country to ensure we have broad geographical representation on our board.

Our ideal candidates will be individuals who can bring a fresh perspective on theatre as well as be technology-savvy, innovative and action-orientated. We are open to candidates form a variety of professional backgrounds and first time trustees. A can-do attitude coupled with a forward-looking outlook is essential. We are open to candidates from a variety of professional backgrounds. Understanding and appreciating the multi-dimensional nature of ETT and its values are key.

As well as serving on the Board and overseeing the strategic direction and good governance of the organisation, the Trustees will play a specific role in oversight of the company’s activities and strategy.

As a volunteer, the Trustees will attend quarterly Trustee meetings as well as offer their time to work closely with the ETT staff team throughout the year.

Strategic HR

An interest in business development and strategy

A background in a contemporary HR environment and passion for good practice.

A commitment to progressive and inclusive employment practices.

Commercial/Legal

You might have some experience in a legal background within any sector for example employment, entertainment, contract, business, finance.

You could have some knowledge of development practices; fundraising & corporate sponsorships.

You may have experience of commercial best practice and a passion to share that with a charitable organisations.

Digital Innovation

You could have experience of working in cutting-edge Digital Projects, organisations & industries.

You may have Experience in Social Media, TV, Film, Immersive Technologies, VR, AI, AR & Digital Storytelling or across a range of digital industries.

Audience Engagement

A wide area of experience is applicable: Marketing, Participation, Data Analysis, PR.

A strong passion for developing new audiences and widening access to the arts.

You could come from a background in communicating with large and diverse groups of people through a range of mediums including print, social media, online etc.

Dear Candidates,

Thank you for your interest in this role at English Touring Theatre (ETT).

Our search for new trustees begins at a very exciting time for the company as we develop and expand our work.

Over the past twelve months, ETT’s bold and varied programming saw our largest ever digital audience and reach and has enabled us to create new ways of making work and connecting with national audiences. The company has expanded beyond its normal producing activity, launching a raft of innovative projects including a cross-industry nationwide touring event (Signal Fires), programming various online & digital works including podcasts and short films (That Podcast, F*cked Up Bedtime Stories, Hold Me Back, Behind the Curtain, Children’s Children, What’s Going On) and creating a zoom show in association with the Soho Theatre & Manchester’s HOME (Open Mic). At the heart of our practice, in whatever medium we work in, we always aim to entertain, challenge and inspire our growing audiences.

ETT also recently launched the Nationwide Voices Programme: offering year-long attachments at regional theatres for six playwrights and led the sector in contributing to the newly released Anti-Racist Touring Rider and was a founding member organisation for the Freelance Task Force. Our upcoming project, Trailer Story enables us to go on the road and take work directly to communities across the country whilst working within current social distancing restrictions.

All this activity occurred whilst making plans to return to the midscale touring work that traditionally sees us collaborating with up to 10 venue partners per year, touring to 25 towns and cities and reaching an average audience of 75,000 people.

The staff and trustees at ETT believe deeply in the power of creative partnerships and strive to work in collaboration with visionary artists and innovative venues to create new and inspiring work on a variety of scale. We believe as a leading company in the UK touring sector, that touring is a vital and meaningful way to meet audiences in their home communities and engage in storytelling on a national scale.

We are looking to recruit engaged, dynamic people to join our Board of Trustees and help drive the company further forward, building upon our current strengths and further expanding both our creative practice and our important role at the heart of the creative industries.

Since its inception over 28 years ago, ETT has produced over 100 productions for over 1.8 million audience members and is always looking for new ways to connect with its audiences.

OUR WORK

We are part of the Tonic Theatre Advance Network; a four-year programme of activities, training, provocation and support led by Tonic designed to enhance our organisation’s work on increasing opportunities for, and representation of, women over the course of the 2018-2022 National Portfolio cycle. We also partner with PIPA (Parents and Carers in Performing Arts), who campaign to enable and empower parents, carers and employers to achieve sustainable change in attitudes and practices in order to attract, support and retain a more diverse and flexible workforce. We are always happy to discuss solutions that allow people to balance their caring responsibilities with their working lives.

ETT are also an ongoing member of the Freelance Theatre Task Force and ETT Co-authored the Anti-Racist Touring Rider in 2021.

F**ked Up Bedtime Stories (for adults) features seven short stories written by Alissa Anne Jeun Yi, Dipo Baruwa-Etti, Tim Crouch, Vivienne Franzmann, Matilda Ibini, Amy Jephta and Anthony Neilson. We asked these 7 brilliant and provocative writers to tackle the strangeness of our night time imaginings and twist the familiar form of bedtime stories into something uncanny, dark and surreal.

Our Board

Meeting quarterly as a full board, and more frequently when occasion arises, they receive reports from the Artistic Director and senior staff, review progress in all areas of the company’s work and develop future strategic initiatives.
