Trustees – up to 4 City Harvest

Join the Board of City Harvest and use your experience to help tackle food poverty, reduce food waste and shape the charity's future.

  • Location: London
  • Salary: Voluntary role, reasonable expenses paid
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Monday 28th September

City Harvest is one of London’s leading food charities, rescuing nutritious surplus food from across the supply chain and delivering it free of charge to organisations supporting people experiencing food poverty. Every week, the charity helps feed more than 130,000 people while preventing good food from going to waste, creating lasting social and environmental impact.

As City Harvest continues to grow, it is seeking up to four new Trustees to strengthen its Board and help shape the next chapter of the organisation’s development. We are particularly keen to appoint at least one trustee with substantial practical experience of logistics, warehousing or fleet operations. We are also seeking trustees who bring frontline, community or lived experience of the issues affecting the people we support, and trustees who can help strengthen our fundraising and income generation. We may also consider candidates who bring other skills, experience or perspectives that would complement the existing Board and make a significant contribution to City Harvest’s future success.

Who we are

City Harvest believes that no good food should go to waste while people go hungry. By working in partnership with farmers, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, the charity rescues high-quality surplus food and redistributes it to hundreds of organisations supporting people across London. This unique model delivers a dual impact: providing nutritious food to communities facing hardship while reducing the environmental impact of food waste. Collaboration, innovation and efficiency are at the heart of City Harvest’s approach, enabling the charity to respond to growing demand and maximise the difference it makes to both people and the planet.

About the role

The Board of Trustees collectively governs and oversees City Harvest, setting its strategic direction and holding the organisation to account. The Chief Executive and executive team lead and run the charity day to day within the authority delegated by the Board. Trustees contribute their experience, judgement and support through the Board and its committees. They also build constructive working relationships with members of the executive team, who may draw directly on their knowledge and expertise, particularly where a trustee has relevant specialist experience or committee responsibilities.

Recruitment priorities

We are seeking to strengthen our Board by appointing trustees who can contribute in one or more of the following priority areas:

  • We are particularly keen to appoint one trustee with substantial current or recent practical experience of leading or directly managing logistics, warehousing or fleet operations. Candidates should understand the operational realities of managing people, health and safety, vehicle operator licensing and regulatory compliance. Experience in food or a related sector would be valuable, but practical operational expertise is more important than sector background or seniority.
  • Frontline or community experience of the issues affecting the people City Harvest supports, such as food insecurity, poverty or homelessness. This might include direct experience of working with community organisations, food banks, homelessness or housing services, or strong connections with the communities we serve.
  • The ability to support City Harvest’s fundraising and income-generation efforts. This might include fundraising or commercial experience, relevant relationships and networks, or the ability to open doors, develop partnerships and advocate effectively for our work.

These are our priorities for this recruitment. We may also consider candidates who bring other skills, experience or perspectives that would complement the existing Board and make a significant contribution to City Harvest’s future success.

Who we are looking for

Previous trustee or senior leadership experience is not essential. We welcome first-time trustees and recognise that relevant insight may come from professional, voluntary, community or lived experience.

All candidates should demonstrate:

  • A genuine commitment to City Harvest’s mission and values, to public benefit, and to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • The ability to understand the responsibilities of trusteeship, think strategically, assess information and risk, and exercise sound independent judgement.
  • The ability to listen, build relationships, contribute a different perspective, challenge constructively and support collective decisions.
  • The integrity, openness, time and energy to prepare well, participate consistently, maintain confidentiality, manage conflicts and continue learning.

City Harvest’s values are community-focused, aspiring, collaborative, compassionate and trustworthy.

Time commitment

The anticipated time commitment is approximately one day per month. This will normally include:

  • Attending four to six Board meetings each year, normally held in person in Central London from 5.00 pm to 7.30 pm, plus an occasional one-day Board session, up to once per year.
  • Preparing for Board meetings and attending meetings of any Board committee to which the trustee is appointed.
  • Liaising with the Chair, Chief Executive and senior colleagues as appropriate.
  • Undertaking agreed activities between meetings, including visiting City Harvest and its partners from time to time, keeping informed and supporting Board priorities.

In addition, appointees should allow approximately three days in total for induction into City Harvest’s work and operations during the first few months of their first year. This is additional to the normal one-day-per-month commitment.

Welcome from the Chair & CEO

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Trustee of City Harvest.

City Harvest plays a vital role in tackling hunger, food poverty and food waste across London. We rescue surplus food, support people and help protect the planet.

As London’s original food redistribution charity, City Harvest has grown significantly since its beginnings in 2014. We have now rescued and redistributed enough food for 90 million meals, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Today, we employ a team of 50+ and benefit from more than 32,000 hours of volunteer support each year.

Our Board plays a vital role in governing and overseeing the charity, working closely with the Chief Executive and executive team to provide strategic direction, constructive challenge and support, while the executive team leads and runs the charity day-to-day.

We are now looking to strengthen our Board by appointing new trustees who will bring different skills, experience and perspectives. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in logistics, those with strong connections to or understanding of the communities we serve and the ability to help strengthen our fundraising and income generation. We may also consider candidates who bring other skills or perspectives that would complement the existing Board and contribute significantly to City Harvest’s future success.

We encourage you to engage with us through Peridot, our recruitment partner, so that you can learn more about City Harvest, our people and our work, and decide whether we are the right charity for you. After all, this is a two-way process: we are seeking the right trustees for City Harvest, and you are seeking the right charity in which to invest your passion, energy and commitment.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Paul Freeston & Richard Gammage
Chair of Trustees & Chief Executive

About City Harvest

Every day, thousands of tonnes of perfectly good food go to waste while many people struggle to access nutritious meals. City Harvest exists to bridge that gap, rescuing surplus food that would otherwise be discarded and redistributing it, free of charge, to organisations supporting people experiencing food poverty across London.

Working with farmers, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, City Harvest has built an efficient logistics operation that enables surplus food to reach the people who need it most. Its fleet of vehicles delivers to food banks, homeless shelters, schools, community kitchens, domestic abuse refuges, refugee organisations, mental health charities and many other local partners, helping to ensure that good food creates social value rather than environmental waste.

The charity’s impact has grown significantly in recent years. Today, City Harvest provides enough food for more than 1.2 million meals every month, supporting over 130,000 people each week. As demand for its services continues to increase, the organisation remains committed to expanding its reach while maintaining the high standards, strong partnerships and operational excellence that underpin its success.

Alongside its direct support for communities, City Harvest is helping to create a more sustainable food system by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with food waste and demonstrating the positive environmental impact of food redistribution.

As City Harvest looks to the future, it is focused on building on this momentum. The charity has ambitious plans to strengthen its operations, deepen relationships across the food industry and community sector, embrace innovation where it can add value, and ensure it remains well placed to respond to changing needs across London.

This is an exciting time to join the Board. As a Trustee, you will work alongside an experienced executive team and fellow Board members to help shape the organisation’s strategic direction, ensuring City Harvest continues to maximise its impact for people, communities and the planet for years to come.
