Who we are

Amref Health Africa is Africa’s leading health charity. We work with women and girls to secure the right to health and break the cycle of poverty. Headquartered in Nairobi, we are truly an African organisation, partnering with communities in 35 countries to create lasting change.

Amref Health Africa UK is one of nine offices in Europe and North America whose primary role is to raise funds and broker partnerships to support and further our work in Africa.

Amref UK’s primary role is income generation from a range of donors, including individuals, institutions, trusts, foundations, and corporate partners. Our fundraising supports four crucial and complementary themed programmes:

  • Maternal, newborn and child health.
  • Sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene.
  • Training of health workers.

Our UK team is composed of Fundraising (Individual Giving and Philanthropy with a focus on unrestricted funding), Programmes and Strategic Partnerships (restricted income), Communications, Finance and Administration functions.

As the world strives to meet the Sustainable Development Goal of Universal Health Coverage by 2030, working collaboratively with national Governments and internationally, Amref is committed to removing the barriers that impede access to healthcare – ensuring no one is left behind.

We have entered a new and exciting phase of growth and development at Amref Health Africa UK, and we are searching for people to join our board who will embrace and support our vision and ambition.

The UK Board

Amref Health Africa UK is a registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Trustees will become part of the Board of Directors and will advise and guide the charity in the accomplishment of its strategic aims.

The Board can be up to 10 members.

The Board operates with two sub-committees – Audit and Finance Committee and Governance Committee and both meet four times a year:

The remit of the Audit and Finance Committee includes:

  • Internal control and risk management systems,
  • Financial planning and reporting,
  • Financial policies and procedures, fraud and whistleblowing,
  • External audit.

The remit of the Governance Committee includes:

  • Board structure, focus and effectiveness,
  • Organisational structure and culture,
  • Human Resources-related areas such as performance, reward and recognition, policy review,
  • Broader governance considerations regarding the relationship with Amref Health Africa HQ.

About the role

Trustees are unpaid volunteers who are part of the Board of Directors. Board Members will:

  • Contribute to the good governance of the charity and advise and guide the charity in the delivery of its strategic aims and direction.
  • Be prepared to serve on one of the committees depending on your skills.
  • Be willing to offer advice at a strategic level to the senior staff of the charity.
  • Act as ambassadors on behalf of Amref Health Africa UK, attending its key events and networking on its behalf where feasible and appropriate.
  • Be ready on an occasional basis to work directly with the management team to offer practical support in areas where the Board member has specialist knowledge, skills or experience to contribute to a specific issue or project.
  • Willingness to draw on professional and personal networks to support fundraising capacity.
  • A strong interest in global healthcare and/or Africa.

To complement the skills and experience of the existing Trustees, we are looking for two Trustees with specific skills.

One Trustee will be a qualified accountant and hold a senior strategic leadership position to be our new Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee. They will need to attend all full Board and all Finance Committee meetings.

Additionally, we seek a Trustee with knowledge of global south business models and transformative funding and/or technical knowledge and thought leadership of current health issues in Africa. This Trustee will join either the Audit and Finance or Governance Committee.

Time Commitment:

Members of the Board are asked to give approximately 8-10 days per year to work flexibly around Board and Committee meetings and other events or projects. Meetings are held in London and Trustees are expected to attend the Board meetings in person. Reasonable expenses will be paid for domestic travel within the UK.

Trustees are expected to commit to the following:

  • To undertake a three-year term which may be extended up to a maximum of nine years.
  • To attend all four Board Meetings in London, and to be prepared to attend all four Committee Meetings per year as assigned.
  • Attend other events when relevant and feasible, as well as training when required.
  • To contribute specialist knowledge, skills or experience to specific issues or projects on an occasional basis.

We are looking for our new Trustees to join in Spring 2024. Our Current Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee reaches the end of term in Autumn 2024 so we aim to offer a long handover during the financial cycle of the charity

As Amref UK, we are extremely proud of the support we provide to Amref Health Africa at an international level, and of the progress we have made towards expanding access to healthcare for some of sub-Saharan Africa’s most remote communities. In 2021, the global Amref family supported 20.1 million people with health advice, care and access to water and sanitation. We trained over 100,000 health workers and supported the vaccination of 1.5 million people against COVID-19.

Based in London, Amref UK is a passionate, committed and enthusiastic team. We have a diverse portfolio of income streams generating over £5 million last year. In 2021, we carried out a strategic review aimed at securing our future, transforming our business model and reshaping our organisation in the process. During this time, we grew our unrestricted income and developed a portfolio of new donors to fund our core programmes. We’ve strengthened our ability to tell the Amref story, making sure that at the core of our communications are the authentic voices of the communities which are at the heart of our work. All of this has been driven by a commitment to a healthy, confident and fair culture across the team.

Strategy – Our Future

The new Global Corporate Strategy 2023-2030 has been approved and formally launched. This strategy is closely aligned with the UHC2030 agenda and aims to address a holistic set of social determinants of health to ensure we are creating lasting health change for people in Africa.

As Amref UK reaches the last year of its current strategy, we will be developing the 2024-2030 Strategy to complement the global strategy. Our aim remains consistent: to ensure that an increased number of people in sub-Saharan Africa have access to high-quality health services every year as a result of Amref UK’s support.

Throughout 2022, despite extremely challenging circumstances, we have maintained our commitment to creating sustainable, community-led health change. We were able to do this thanks to our strong financial position, a skilled staff team, and our dedicated supporters and partners.

Financial Summary

For the year ending 31 December 2022, our income was just over £5 million.  Amref UK raised just over £1 million in unrestricted and £4 million in restricted funding in the year. The most significant portion of our income comes from trusts and foundations, with a number of large grants and donations.

On 31 December 2022, our unrestricted reserves were just over £1 million.
