Trustees Active4Blood

Active4Blood organises sponsored sporting events which promote life-saving blood donations and empowers their community partners to participate in physical activity. Building our first Board with 9 new Trustees is exciting and will help to propel us forward to take advantage of the opportunities we have to expand across the UK.

  • Salary: Unremunerated
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Tuesday 30th August 2022

Active4Blood works with NHS Blood Services in Wales and England to address the high demand for life-saving donations. We accomplish this by conducting sporting activities, such as walking, trekking, jogging, and cycling, during which sponsors are urged to contribute through blood donations.

Aims:

Their key aims as a charity are:

  • To promote blood donation and save lives
  • To encourage physical activity
  • To support health & wellbeing
  • To provide an alternative ‘sponsorship’ methodology to cash donation

Achievements:

Despite being a relatively new charity, starting officially in February 2021, the effectiveness of Active4Blood’s novel approach to charitable giving has caught the attention of influential partners. Prior to their official status as a charity, on a single day they obtained 78 new blood donors and 26 return donors from sponsored running, hiking, cycling and triathlon events.

Active4Blood has also signed the Armed Forces Covenant, which demonstrates their commitment to supporting the armed forces community. Moreover, the charity received the Bronze Award from the MOD Employer Recognition Scheme, showing that they are dedicated to supporting and employing current/ex-armed forces members, cadet instructors and military spouses/partners.

In January 2022 they became an official member organisation of the Welsh Sports Association (WSA.) This has enabled them to build connections with the National Governing Bodies of and thereby create an even bigger impact in the worlds of Sport and Health. Active4Blood is partnered with several Rugby clubs in South Wales that run annual events and raise awareness for them.

Who we are looking for:

Active4Blood are looking for trustees with sector experience in any of the following areas:

  • Sports – Football, Rugby or other mass participation sports. Including people with experience in National Governing Bodies.
  • Education – Higher Education, Further Education, and school board leadership and governance.
  • Public sector/Military.

We also need people to have experience in a range of skills needed to run and govern a charity including marketing and communications, particularly digital marketing, and social media, for raising the charity’s visibility. Experience in community fundraising, event planning is sought to facilitate the running of large, co-ordinated sporting activities by the charity.

As a trustee, you will need to make a meaningful impact by raising awareness of the importance of blood donation in one of our sectors. As a result, it is essential that you are passionate about blood donation and understand the significance of frequent blood donation to our health and well-being. Many of us have donated blood or have had our lives directly impacted by blood donation, and we all have the potential to require a life-saving blood donation at some point in our lives.

As a new organisation, you will need to be happy to assist with both operational and strategic activities, bringing all of your skills from past roles. If you have previous experience working in a start-up or love helping to build the governance of a charity, this should be an exciting opportunity for you.

About Active4Blood

Story

The founder and trustee of Active4Blood, Julian Wilde-Davies, recognised an untapped niche in the charity sector:

“We all support many different charities by fundraising and donating our hard-earned cash. Many of us take part in charity events including cycling, running, and walking. I personally find that asking the same people to support me financially time and time again is difficult. We all have plenty of “The red stuff”, so I thought why not continue to support a good cause by donating what I already have, rather than cash donations” ~Wilde-Davies.

Wilde-Davies and fellow armed forces veterans took part in a series of coordinated athletic events on October 10th, 2020, to kick off the charity with a bang. A crew of eight completed a Hike4Blood. They hiked 29 miles from the Welsh Blood Service headquarters in Talbot Green to the village of Beddau. Simultaneously, 7 rugby clubs from the South of Wales took part in a Run4Blood event around their club rugby fields. They have since agreed to make an annual commitment to the charity. Beddau Bike Club and Pontyclun Flyers both accomplished 100-mile Bike4Blood cycling challenges. On the same day, Trizone Fitness, a team of six triathletes, completed an indoor Ironman distance triathlon for the charity. The blood donations given by sponsors, which included 78 new donors and 26 returning donors, were the results of all their hard work.

After proving the functionality of their method of blood donation as a viable alternative to cash donation by sponsors, the Charity was officially launched in February 2021. It has since gained recognition from the Ministry of Defence and the Wales Sporting Association (WSA.)

Vision

Active4Blood has a vision to ‘get the blood flowing.’

Aims

The Charities aims are to Engage, Educate and Empower.

  • To Engage and encourage all communities to become involved in campaigning and promoting within their local area.
  • To Educate and raise awareness of the importance and need for Blood Donations.
  • To Empower and promote physical activity, health, and wellbeing within local communities, with a focus and aim to raise awareness and encourage blood donations as an alternative fund-raising concept

Strategy

There are 3 key sectors that Active4Blood aims to target in its first 3-year plan (2021-2023.)

These include:

  • Armed Forces – Regular, Reservist & Veterans Community
  • Sports & Fitness – Rugby Community, Football Teams
  • Education – Schools, Colleges, Universities and Further Education

Creating Community Partners within these sectors is an essential part of Active4Blood’s strategy. Community Blood Partners will host yearly Active4Blood sporting events and campaigns to increase blood donation awareness and get people active. These will also be critical in expanding the charity’s reach and increasing the overall number of blood donors in England and Wales.

The organisation is also in the process of developing a ‘Young Blood Champions’ programme, which will teach 14-25-year-olds to become advocates for blood donation within their communities. This will be a 6-week education programme done in collaboration with local governing bodies. It will teach young people about blood donation and health, culminating in them becoming volunteers in their community. This part of the strategy will be important in getting younger people informed about blood donation and increasing the number of blood donors in younger people.

Structure

The charity consists of 3 trustees and half a dozen other willing volunteers thus far. Developing the board of trustees is the first step in forming the overall structure of the charity as it expands in size.

Commitment

Trustees are expected to give 1-2 days each month of work to the charity.  This will most likely entail one half-day meeting via Zoom, as well as attending to emails and other operational activities during the month. As meetings will be held virtually candidates can be based anywhere in the UK. Travel to Wales for meetings and events may be required in the future
