About the roles

As a Trustee for Abbey Multi Academy Trust (Abbey MAT), you play a crucial role in overseeing the effective governance and administration of the Trust. Your responsibilities extend to ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies such as the Charity Commission and the Department for Education, safeguarding Trust assets, and utilising our resources responsibly to achieve our mission. As a Trustee, you hold ultimate accountability for the Trust’s actions and decisions.

Beyond your fiduciary duties, you are a custodian of our ethos and values, ensuring that the leadership team embodies our vision to deliver public benefit.

Trustees should exercise reasonable care, skill, and diligence in their decision-making, seeking professional advice where necessary, especially in areas requiring specialised knowledge.

Collaboration with other Trustees to make informed decisions is essential to promote the Trust’s long-term success and to avoid conflicts of interest.

We are in the process of setting our strategic priorities for the next three years in readiness for the launch of the next plan. Your role involves contributing to the strategic development of the Trust while maintaining responsible management practices that align with our objectives.

Trustees play an active role in setting the strategic direction of the Trust, implementing policies to safeguard assets, and promoting the Trust’s growth and sustainability.

As a Trustee, you will have a direct impact on the success of our schools, so it is essential that you are passionate about providing the best opportunities for our children and staff, and possess the strategic leadership skills to support and challenge our leaders effectively.

Abbey MAT values a culture that places learners at the heart of everything we do. Therefore, we need our Trust Board to reflect these values and work toward creating the best environment for our students.

The background of our Trustees can vary, but what matters most is your commitment to our mission and your ability to contribute meaningfully to the Trust’s success.

Our Trust Board members serve as registered directors, responsible for ensuring clarity of vision, ethos, and strategic direction. The Board provides a diverse range of expertise, knowledge, and perspectives to support and challenge Abbey MAT in achieving its vision and maintaining its role as a key contributor to the educational community.

Abbey MAT has undergone significant changes and growth over the past decade. We have improved learner outcomes across our Trust and are proud of our status as a leading educational provider. However, we are not content to rest on our successes.

We remain committed to continuous improvement, growth, serving our communities, and striving for excellence for all our learners to help them reach their full potential.

As a Trustee, you will play an integral role in this journey, and we welcome you to join us in shaping the future of Abbey MAT.

Time commitment

We understand that being a Trustee is a significant voluntary time commitment. It is expected that Trustees are available to attend 6 in-person all-board meetings per year and join at least one committee, who meet 3 times virtually per year.

We are also undergoing a strategic review and have encouraged our Trustees to join 4 half-day away days annually.

Who we are looking for

Trustees with education leadership and policy understanding

We are looking for candidates with backgrounds in effective teaching and learning, school improvement, or curriculum design and development.

Candidates should bring a deep understanding of the classroom and be well-versed in effective teaching and learning frameworks. Your expertise will be crucial in supporting and constructively challenging our executive team, as well as in contributing to our ongoing efforts to enhance school improvement and quality assurance.

As we grow as a Trust, it is important that our board provides positive challenge and scrutiny to our executive leaders, so having a deep-rooted understanding of effective school improvement is key.

You should have a deep understanding of the current education landscape, including key regulations, trends, and challenges facing schools and multi academy trusts.

As we grow, we need Trustees who can leverage their networks to foster strategic partnerships and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including DfE, other educators, policy makers, government agencies, and community leaders.

You will share knowledge and guide educational strategy, help shape policy decisions, and support the Trust’s mission to improve outcomes for all of our learners.

As we enter a new phase of strategic development as a Trust, we are looking for individuals to challenge and support the executive team, and ultimately, ensure that our educational strategies align with the Trust’s goals and the needs of our students, staff, and wider community.

Through a range of opportunities including academic, cultural and spiritual, our pupils and colleagues are empowered and nurtured to flourish and live ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10).

Trustee with people strategy and HR expertise

We are also seeking a Trustee with a strong background in developing and implementing people strategies in either the public or third sector.

Our Trust is committed to creating an excellent working environment for all staff, and your role as a Trustee with strategic HR expertise will be pivotal in shaping and guiding our HR policies and practices.

You will work closely with the Trust’s People Committee to ensure we are effectively managing our human resources and fostering a positive workplace culture.

Candidates should have demonstrable experience in leading HR functions within public or third sector organisations.

You should be comfortable advising executive and non-executive leaders on a wide range of people-related issues, such as employment law, recruitment, grievances, pay and reward, learning and development, and performance management.

Your insights and expertise will be instrumental in helping us refine our HR strategy and ensure our staff have the support they need to succeed.

Trustee with finance and strategic management background

We are also seeking a Trustee with a robust background in finance, accounting, or financial strategy. You will work closely with the Trust’s Finance Committee to ensure effective management of our financial resources and compliance with regulatory standards. Our Trust is dedicated to maintaining a financially stable and transparent organisation, and your role as a Trustee with financial expertise will be crucial in guiding our financial policies and practices as we grow.

Candidates should have proven experience in leading financial operations. We need someone who can offer insight and guidance for wide range of financial topics, including budgeting, forecasting, financial risk management, compliance, and audits. Your expertise will be essential in refining our financial strategy, overseeing our budgetary processes, and ensuring that the Trust maintains financial health to support its educational objectives.

We seek a Trustee who can bring insights into best practices for financial governance and contribute to strategic decision-making at the Trust level. This role requires a collaborative approach and a commitment to supporting the Trust’s mission to provide an excellent educational environment while ensuring financial sustainability. If you have a strong background in finance and a passion for educational success, we invite you to apply for this position.

Peridot Partners and Abbey MAT are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
