St Clare Hospice is a highly regarded independent charity providing comprehensive end-of-life healthcare for the West Essex and East Hertfordshire community. Building on the foundations of more than 25 years’ work, we support and care for people with terminal or life-limiting illnesses and their families and carers.
Our core services include an 8-bed in-patient facility, Hospice at Home, and a range of day services, therapies, support and information for patients and their families. We also run a children’s bereavement service, and launched a Compassionate Neighbours project in early 2018: a volunteer-led programme aimed at reducing social isolation for end-of-life people in their own homes.
We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee, receiving around 40% of funding from the NHS. We rely on the generosity of our local community to fund the remaining 60% of our costs. This comes from many people, events, local businesses, trusts, schools, community groups, our shops, our lottery and gifts in Wills.
The Hospice is now entering the second year of a three-year strategic plan that aims to meet the needs of more people in the local area. The strategy places more focus on community outreach and effective collaboration with local health and voluntary sector organisations. We are now looking to augment and diversify our board with one additional trustee – a strategic finance professional.
We are looking for an experienced strategic finance professional, ideally with some experience of charity financial accounting. In addition to your strategic experience, you will bring experience of leadership and governance within an organisation with service delivery at its heart. This role will offer both challenge and support to the executive team as a ‘critical friend’.

We are a well-run hospice that was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in March 2020. We have skilled and motivated staff and volunteers and are on the brink of some exciting opportunities. We have a passion to provide the best specialist palliative care to those affected by terminal or life-limiting conditions in West Essex and the borders of East Hertfordshire.
We give those we care for the confidence to cope, and to enjoy the best quality of life possible, and our range of services provide patients, their families and carers, with physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual support, at home or at the Hospice. All of us here are highly committed to what we do. We work closely with all health and social care professionals and are held in high regard by the local community we support.
You will be joining us at an exciting time as we begin to see our strategy for St Clare come to fruition, building on our achievements to date and continuing to respond to the needs of our patients by developing and extending the range of services we provide. Our aim is to reach more people and continue to shape our services around patients’ needs and those of their family and friends. Our holistic approach aims to make sure we provide our patients and their families with choice and confidence to cope, so that they can enjoy the best quality of life possible.
It costs us £4.1m to run all our hospice services. Forty percent of our funding comes from commissioned NHS services, but the rest of the cost of our services is met through donations and voluntary funding.
We are now looking to further strengthen our dedicated board with an additional trustee who will want to use their knowledge and expertise to support St Clare’s work to provide outstanding care and to help shape its strategic approach. We are looking for an experienced strategic finance professional – who will bring experience of charity financial accounting.

Our vision is that every adult with a life-limiting condition in our local communities should have access to palliative care services wherever and whenever they need them so that they can make the most of every moment, no matter how long they have left to live.
Our mission is to provide both specialist clinical services and volunteer-led social support that meet the complex medical and social needs of local people around the issues of death, dying and loss.

St Clare Hospice is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. There are currently 13 Trustees and they are also Directors of the company under company law.

What we provide:
The St Clare Clinical team consists of doctors, specialist palliative nurses, nursing assistants, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers and the chaplain. The team work seven days per week, 365 days of the year.
Community Palliative Care Team
The Clinical Nurse Specialist Team care for people with life-limiting conditions, supporting patients with complex needs in their own homes. They provide specialist advice as well as emotional and psychological support. They work closely with GPs, district nurses and all health and social care professionals who are involved in a patient’s care, both within the Hospice and externally.
Hospice at Home
Hospice at Home is part of our community nursing service. It provides hands-on, palliative care in the last few days of life or during times of crisis, when rapid support is needed. The service helps to avoid any clinically unnecessary or unwanted admissions to hospital. This service operates seven days a week, over a full 24-hour period.
Our Inpatient Unit has a lovely warm homely feel, allowing people to be together with privacy and dignity. Each of our eight en-suite rooms face onto the gardens. This service operates seven days a week, over a full 24-hour period.
Day Therapy Services
Day Therapy at St Clare Hospice cares for patients and families in a wide range of ways to enhance quality of life, promote independence and build self-confidence. This service offers group work, individual work and specialist clinics held with specialist nurses that are tailored to individual patient needs, as well as social support groups.
Outpatient appointments can be made with any of our specialist care team and tailored to individual needs. The team providing our outpatients services consists of doctors, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, bereavement counsellors and the chaplain.
Patient & Family Support
The Patient and Family Support team at St Clare Hospice works with patients holistically, considering all their practical, emotional, spiritual and social needs, as well as offering support to family and friends. The team consists of counsellors, the chaplain and social workers. A children’s bereavement service supports children and young people affected by loss, including support for teachers and schools.
Rehabilitation aims to improve, or limit the loss of, an individual’s ability to do every day activities. The physiotherapists and occupational therapists work as a team to ensure that they are working on the things that are most important to our patients aiding independence and ease.
Our chaplain can offer a supportive presence, spiritual care and a listening ear as an intrinsic part of people’s overall wellbeing. We support people of all faiths, or of no faith, and patients/families are always welcome to be supported by their own faith leaders.
Support for Carers
Being a carer for someone with a life-limiting illness can be confusing, stressful and exhausting. St Clare offers support for those directly involved in caring for the person who is ill through individual and group support.
Grief is a natural reaction to the loss of someone close. St Clare’s bereavement support and counselling services can help families and children of our patients to face the grieving journey with vital support; additionally a number of bereavement cafes online (and when possible, in venues across West Essex), bereavement online groups and a telephone helpline is available to any resident in West Essex who has been affected by loss or bereavement. This includes a young person’s bereavement café, currently meeting online, which is for 18-30 year olds.
A strategy has been developed with aims to build on the strong foundations of the hospice. This articulates a stronger focus on collaboration with local health, community and voluntary sector groups and organisations as well as a ‘grassroots’, volunteer-led approach to strengthening the resilience and confidence of our local communities to cope with death, dying and loss. Although we are specialists in delivering expert end of life medical care and support, death is a natural part of life that affects us all. St Clare has a role to play in encouraging communities to care for each other, knowing how to access the more specialised care when needed.
