Who we are

Solent Mind is the largest mental health charity in Hampshire, (£14m) and part of a network of over 100 Local Minds who tailor trusted mental health services to its communities. We give anyone with a mental health issue somewhere to turn to for support.

With geography spanning Southampton, Portsmouth and southern Hampshire, we supported almost 45,000 people in 2022/23 to access mental health support, whether early intervention, therapeutic care, peer support in primary and secondary services, through to crisis support when people feel at their most vulnerable.

The organisation has doubled in size over the last 5 years, with the unprecedented demand for Mental Health services. In response, we have been increasing our delivering teams, and having been through an organisation restructure, we now have an almost new SMT at the helm.

Who we are looking for

Solent Mind is seeking a qualified Treasurer to join their Board of Trustees.

Ideally, you will be a successful senior financial leader within a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation with expertise working with auditors and some board and charity governance experience.

A collegiate, practical approach is particularly sought, alongside the willingness to be available to act as a sounding board for the Finance Director and CEO when required.

Empathy with and/or interest in the mental health and well-being landscape and the challenges in our community is desirable.

We also welcome applicants from minority and ethnic communities who are underrepresented on the Board. We value diverse perspectives from the widest possible range of backgrounds.

Time commitment

The time commitment will be approximately 2 – 3 days per month.

There are 6 scheduled Board and 4 Committee meetings annually and regular monthly calls with the Director of Finance.

Thank you for your interest in becoming our Treasurer at Solent Mind.

It’s an exciting time to join us: we are launching our new strategy with an ambition to support more people than ever to develop positive mental well-being.

We want to reach ever deeper into our local communities to ensure everyone can access the mental health support they need, and then deliver the greatest impact we can.

For us, this means putting people at the centre of everything we do, working with compassion and empathy, whilst ensuring every step we take is effective and collaborative, working with our service users, our partners, whether local authorities and the NHS or other community organisations and local leaders.

Managing our resources properly is a critical part of this task. We are fortunate to have a skilled Finance Director who brings both compliance and accuracy, together with an understanding of our contracts and programmes to ensure we continually deliver the best value, whilst also meeting the needs of our communities.

Our Treasurer provides strong governance to this process. By providing constructive challenge and oversight, we ensure we use our resources wisely, yet able to deliver on our purpose; “Supporting everyone to develop positive mental well-being, live well and thrive.”

Our wider board of trustees will support you in this process.  As each trustee takes on a different lead role across the charity, together we have a strong helicopter view of the strategic, financial and compliance aspects of our work.
