Thank you for your interest in The Cornwall College Group (TCCG).
I joined the Group as Principal and CE in September 2019 and I have been really inspired by the way staff have risen to new challenges. Our recent excellent Ofsted report is a testament to the brilliant teamwork from all colleagues across the Group.
Ofsted recognised the strength of our provision and the incredible journey we have been on, stating that “senior leaders and governors have transformed the culture at the college and are passionate about the power of education to change lives and benefit the wider community.”
Most pleasingly Ofsted recognise that our learners enjoy attending college, there is a culture of mutual respect and learners “revel in their training and take pride in what they do”.
The attitude and ability of staff and learners, the financial stability of the Group, and the wonderful setting of Cornwall and Devon really does make the Group a lovely place to work. We set high standards for ourselves and our learners, and our rapid improvement shows that our culture is bringing success. My philosophy is simple, we put the learner at the heart of all decision making, with an unrelenting focus on the quality of education and the learner experience. Our staff and learner surveys also endorse the College as a great place to work and learn.
I have worked in the FE sector for more than 30 years and have been part of taking four colleges to ‘Outstanding’.
I am confident that we will do the same here in Cornwall, we are well on our way.
We would love to hear from you if you would like to be part of our success story. We are looking for contributors who share our values and want to further improve the quality of education and learner experience across the South West. We look forward to hearing from you.
With best wishes
Principal and Chief Executive
The work of our Governors is central to the success of The Cornwall College Group. The Board comprises of twenty Governors including the Principal and Chief Executive, students and staff members.
Governors are collectively responsible for determining the strategic direction of the College, oversight of its activities, effective and efficient use of its resources, the solvency of the institution, and safeguarding its assets.
The Governors of The Cornwall College Group come from a variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of skills, knowledge and experiences. Governors are unpaid and act in a voluntary capacity. They are required to act in the best interests of the College and to comply with a code of conduct.
Governors provide expertise in their area and ensure the collaboration of governors is effective and of the highest standards. They work as a coherent unit, and in close partnership with the senior management team, to achieve the College’s strategic objectives.
Characteristics and qualities needed
Commitment required of Governors
Time is needed both to attend meetings and for preparation and reading the papers which are sent out approximately one week before meetings. Governors are asked to attend approximately 10 meetings a year (including six Board meetings and three meetings of a committee) and three campus visits a year to meet students and staff. Alongside this, it is expected that Governors attend development events and occasional informal events, which are usually held at the College’s corporate headquarters in St Austell.
Induction and development
In welcoming new Governors an induction programme is provided and adapted to suit individual needs. Supported with training and development events, core training modules and arranged visits to different campuses to meet both student and staff.
The Cornwall College Group is looking for new Governors who thrive on challenge, and most importantly, are passionate about education, recognising the importance of vocational education and delivering positive outcomes for young people, local communities and employers from across the local area.
Candidates are sought with experience in strategic leadership in the following areas:
As specialist Land-based colleges, with excellent education and training in agriculture, land, and animal sciences, we seek a new Governor who is an expert in their field. We are looking for experience of the rural industries and economies, with an understanding of some of the key challenges, skills, needs and opportunities for the college and community.
We also seek to appoint a Governor with experience in capital projects, to help the Board support the future growth of the group. You will provide oversight, scrutiny and challenge to ensure that projects add value, support our sustainability agenda, and deliver an exciting and productive learning environment for all our students.
In addition, it is desirable that candidates can constructively challenge and, as part of the board, hold the executive team to account whilst providing support and advice.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join an ambitious and progressive Board of Governors and, in collaboration with the executive team, make a genuine impact on the future success of the colleges and its students. You will support the development of and influence the direction of The Cornwall College Group at a time of great momentum as we seek to secure finances, grow the organisation, and aspire to provide outstanding, meaningful education and opportunities for employment.
