About The Cornwall College Group

The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) has campuses throughout Cornwall and Devon. We are also the largest education and training provider in the region, with more than 13,000 learners studying with us each year, nearly a 1,000 of whom are studying a university programme as part of Cornwall College University Centre. Our achievements are plentiful and our proven track record of almost 20,000 apprentices in 15 years makes us the most successful provider of work-based learning.

The Group is made up of five core brands:

Cornwall College has two general further education campuses in Camborne and St Austell and a specialist marine campus in Newquay. TCCG’s two specialist land-based colleges, Duchy College and Bicton College, have three campuses: Duchy College Stoke Climsland in East Cornwall, Duchy College Rosewarne near Camborne and Bicton College in East Devon. Falmouth Marine School specialises in marine engineering, watersports and boatbuilding.

We also have The Plymouth Engineering Skills Centre, a Professional Skills and Golf Centre at St Mellion Resort and a training partnership with the world-famous Eden Project (Eden Project Learning). We offer the widest range of specialist vocational training for everyone in Cornwall and beyond, including:

Thank you for your interest in The Cornwall College Group (TCCG).

I joined the Group as Principal and CE in September 2019 and I have been really inspired by the way staff have risen to new challenges. Our recent excellent Ofsted report is a testament to the brilliant teamwork from all colleagues across the Group.

Ofsted recognised the strength of our provision and the incredible journey we have been on, stating that “senior leaders and governors have transformed the culture at the college and are passionate about the power of education to change lives and benefit the wider community.”

Most pleasingly Ofsted recognise that our learners enjoy attending college, there is a culture of mutual respect and learners “revel in their training and take pride in what they do”.

The attitude and ability of staff and learners, the financial stability of the Group, and the wonderful setting of Cornwall and Devon really does make the Group a lovely place to work. We set high standards for ourselves and our learners, and our rapid improvement shows that our culture is bringing success. My philosophy is simple, we put the learner at the heart of all decision making, with an unrelenting focus on the quality of education and the learner experience. Our staff and learner surveys also endorse the College as a great place to work and learn.

I have worked in the FE sector for more than 30 years and have been part of taking four colleges to ‘Outstanding’.

I am confident that we will do the same here in Cornwall, we are well on our way.

Role Description

The work of our Governors is central to the success of The Cornwall College Group. The Board comprises of twenty Governors including the Principal and Chief Executive, students and staff members.

Governors are collectively responsible for determining the strategic direction of the College, oversight of its activities, effective and efficient use of its resources, the solvency of the institution, and safeguarding its assets.

The Governors of The Cornwall College Group come from a variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of skills, knowledge and experiences. Governors are unpaid and act in a voluntary capacity. They are required to act in the best interests of the College and to comply with a code of conduct.

Governors provide expertise in their area and ensure the collaboration of governors is effective and of the highest standards. They work as a coherent unit, and in close partnership with the senior management team, to achieve the College’s strategic objectives.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for volunteers to join our Board, or support the work of the Board as a member of a Committee or Strategy Group, with knowledge, skills and experience in one of the following areas:

  • Ecology
  • Equine
  • Horticulture
  • Zoo Management

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are comfortable operating at a strategic level.
  • Can support the development of our resources, estates and/or curriculum.
  • can work with us in horizon scanning and developing a future picture for careers in these areas.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join or volunteer in support of an ambitious and progressive Board of Governors and, in collaboration with the executive team, make a genuine impact on the future success of the colleges and its students. You will support the development of and influence the direction of The Cornwall College Group at a time of great momentum as we seek to secure finances, grow the organisation, and aspire to provide outstanding, meaningful education and opportunities for employment.
