About Southport Education Group

With a vision to be a driving force for education and economic excellence in Southport and the region, Southport Education Group is an organisation that strives for excellence in all that we do. Graded as Good by Ofsted in February 2020, the organisation has recently been through a rebranding exercise and launched an ambitious new five-year strategic plan which aims to ensure that we create a positive, high-expectation learning environment that allows people to excel in their future careers, education, training and life.

As a Group, we operate across two distinct campuses, Southport College and King George V Sixth Form. From these campuses, we are able to provide a comprehensive academic, vocational and technical offer for school leavers across Southport, and ensure that college-based A-level provision continues to be provided within the town. In total, we provide education and training to around 3,500 post-16 learners each year.

“This is a very exciting time to be involved with Southport Education Group because we are now in a position where we have a chance to really develop. Our board is totally committed to the College and is one of our biggest assets.”

Michelle Brabner – Principal & Chief Executive.

In addition to this, we offer a range of provision which supports around 1,500 adult learners. Through this provision, we can support individuals in our local community to upskill or re-train, to improve their employment and career prospects or prepare for higher education. With the local economy in mind, we work with more than 300 employers to provide apprenticeships and develop employee skills.

“We want to be an organisation that is recognised as outstanding in everything that we do. A place where every student has opportunity and is thoroughly supported to achieve their aspirations. We want to be an enabler for our community.”

Paul Walker – Chair of the Corporation

Built around our values of trust, positivity, professionalism, collaboration and achievement we are proud of the progress we have made in recent years and look forward to welcoming a new member to our board who will be able to help us continue on our journey of growth and improvement.

Peridot Partners and Southport Education Group are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.

Role Description

Our College Board offers scrutiny, challenge and advice across both our general FE function at Southport College and our sixth form site, King George V College. Through this governance function and the associated Committees, our board members play a vital role in supporting our senior leaders to achieve high-quality, successful outcomes for the College as well as in challenging ourselves to drive improvements in every aspect of our work.

As we embark on the next stage of our journey, with a new strategic plan underpinning our delivery, we are conscious of our need to ensure that our financial health is protected and that decisions relating to investment and carefully considered and scrutinised. With have worked hard in recent years to ensure that our finances remain healthy.

We have a turnover of around £15m and our next financial health score is predicted to be ‘Good’.’. To ensure that we can continue to maintain this positive financial outlook – and indeed further improve it – we seek to appoint a new individual who can be an active member of our wider governing body and who will also be invited to use their specific skills and experience to support our Resources Committee.

We welcome applications from senior, qualified, finance professionals who may be based in a range of professional settings such as other parts of the education sector, public bodies or corporate and commercial businesses.

You will preferably have an understanding of good governance, be able to offer appropriate challenges to our senior leaders and bring innovation and creativity to our discussions to help us navigate the growth of our future provision and any related challenges.

“The College is at a really exciting point in its history. If we think about where we’ve been and the challenges we’ve faced – we are getting back to that heyday. The College is vital to the town. If you genuinely want to make a difference to our town and its families, then being on our Board is the perfect way to do that.”

Michelle Brabner – Principal & Chief Executive.

We hope to engage with individuals with the appropriate skills and experience from across the North West, particularly those who are able to offer real scrutiny of our performance and the related data and are especially interested in those who have a passion for supporting and developing opportunities for learners in the communities local to our college.

The successful candidate will need to be able to commit to attending onsite meetings in Southport. Current Governors dedicate no more than 10 hours per month to their role, along with attendance at other ad-hoc events at college throughout the year.
