Join a charity that helps small organisations with a social purpose to change lives, improve communities and broaden people's opportunities. We are looking to appoint a number of new trustees including a new treasurer. We would love to hear from people from Black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds, people with disabilities, people at different stages in their careers and first-time trustees.

  • Location: UK wide with meetings held virtually

The Small Charities Coalition helps small organisations with a social purpose to change lives, improve communities and broaden people’s opportunities. Through our network of over 15,000 member organisations, we are a voice for people working on the front line of some of our communities’ biggest problems. We work to ensure that small charities are recognised, respected and receive the rewards they deserve – Small Charities Matter.

We provide small not-for-profit organisations with the information, advice and support to help them deliver what they want and to also make sure their voices are heard at a national level. Our role is to bring together small not-for-profits with other charities, the public sector and private sector agencies to exchange ideas and collaborate. We create resources and run a helpdesk which supports charities in the logistics of set up and management; for example, establishing a charity structure and registering with the Charity Commission. We are currently holding our training and events for our members online.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an ever-increasing negative effect on charities – and we have been never more needed. During this time, we have been a trusted source of information and a convener for our members to come together. Between April and June 2020, we managed 1,086 enquiries on our helpdesk (a 407% increase on the previous 12 months), connected 2,055 members (an 800% increase on the previous 12 months) and we connected 401 members through our online meet ups. We are playing a vital role during the pandemic to ensure our members’ voices are heard and central and local government is aware of the work small charities and not-for-profits contribute to our communities.

We have a strong desire and ambition to continue to provide the very best services to our members and small charities across the UK. We deliver high-quality information, guidance and advice to small charities, and encourage continued collaboration and innovation among our members, funders and partners. We want to project and amplify a positive representation of small charities and not-for-profits, demonstrate their great impact and create a more robust, sustainable, and inclusive organisation that is committed to equity, anti-prejudice and anti-discrimination work. In other words, our future is committed to developing our organisation service innovation, creating more partnerships, increasing representation and ensuring sustainability in our organisation and those we support.

Who we're looking for

We are looking to appoint a number of new trustees including a new treasurer and keen to ensure our board is diverse and represents our whole society better. We want our board to be inclusive with more diverse voices, different perspectives and a range of background experiences. In particular, we are interested in applications from people from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities, and first-time trustees.

We are dealing with large-scale national issues and challenges so are keen to bring on board people with relevant large-scale organisational experience in strategic finance, organisational development and people with experience in digital development, data analysis and research. All of our trustees have a passion for the work small charities do and the impact they have in communities across the UK. Currently the board meets monthly for two hours and we expect the time commitment for trustees to be around a day a month, at times this may be more but would not exceed an additional day.

Who we are

The Small Charities Coalition exists to make life easier for small charities. Founded in 2008, we currently have over 14,000 members across the UK, made up of groups of volunteers, local community and neighbourhood organisations, registered charities and community interest companies. Across the UK there are officially more than 200,000 registered charities and many more community interest companies and unregistered organisations all working to make the world and our lives better.

​Our mission is to provide small not for profit organisations with the relevant information, advice and support to help them deliver what they want and to also make sure their voices are heard.

Our Membership

Membership for organisations

You don’t have to be a registered charity to join us. Our members include organisations just starting out to set up an organisation, community organisations that are not registered with the Charity Commission, or registered charities or community interest companies.

​Membership is free and is open to any UK based charity with an annual income of under £1 million. However, our specialism is working with not for profits that have an income of under £350k.

Membership for Organisations includes:

  • A weekly bulletin full of advice, information and practical advice
  • Access to the SCC resource hubcovering all areas of how to run not for profit organisations
  • Invitations to training and events
  • The chance to contribute your views to influence national and regional policy
  • Offers and discounts on certain services and products.

Membership for individuals includes

  • A weekly newsletter
  • Special and targeted bulletins
  • Access to opportunities for research, sponsorship and promotion
