Safeguarding Governor | Shrewsbury Colleges Group

Shrewsbury Colleges Group are looking to engage a Safeguarding Governor to join the Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is responsible for the College mission and strategic direction, the oversight of quality and financial performance, and challenging and holding to account the Principal/CEO and Senior Leadership Team.

About the role

The Board is made up of Governors from a variety of backgrounds. They include staff and students from the College as well as parent governors and external members drawn from a range of backgrounds including business, education and the community. The Safeguarding Governor on the Board has a key role in ensuring that the College fulfils its duties in relation to safeguarding both in policy and practice.

The incoming Safeguarding Governor will work with the college Vice Principal and Designated Safeguarding Lead to ensure that all matters relating to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults are aligned with educational policy, are reviewed and re-evaluated on a regular basis through feedback, appraisal and application of best practice.

Who we are looking for

The incumbent Safeguarding Governor is due to come to the end of their tenure later this year and, in light of this and the requirement to improve the most recent Ofsted grading, Shrewsbury Colleges Group are seeking to complement the current governing body with a new Board Member with a strong track record and expertise in safeguarding.

We are looking for someone who enjoys a challenge and most importantly is passionate about delivering positive outcomes for young people, the communities which the College serves and employers of the local area. Fundamentally, you must recognise the importance of education and how it enhances our ever-changing society.

We are particularly keen to engage experienced strategic leaders with a successful track record in safeguarding, an understanding of the Government’s Prevent Duty and an interest in the welfare and wellbeing of young people. The ideal candidate will take the lead in supporting the Designated Safeguarding Lead and the senior leadership team in improving the student experience to ensure that the student body feel safe whilst studying, and the staff are aware of their responsibilities in keeping each other safe in the working environment.

Dear Candidate,

The College is currently on a journey. Four years ago, Shrewsbury Colleges Group was created through the merger of the Sixth Form College and College of Arts and Technology. The last few years have had a focus on building this into one great college and much of that work is now completed.

The breadth of the student offer from GSCE’s, A-Levels, BTEC, apprenticeship programmes through to HE courses, including degree level, makes this such a vibrant and impressive college.

We are now ready to move forward to the next exciting stage of the College’s development and about to create our new 3-5 year strategic plan. The future looks bright despite any short-term blips due to the pandemic which is being managed extremely well.

Student numbers are expected to continue to rise and we have great ambition to ensure we are providing the needed educational and vocational opportunities for the student of the 2020 decade, as well as the life-skills and employer or follow-on education opportunities which will see our students prosper as they develop their path in life.

I am relatively new to the area and to the College, however I can already see that we have a strong and passionate Principal, Senior Leadership Team and Staff to lead us through this next exciting period. I am building upon an already skilled and committed group of governors to help oversee this new direction.

The focus of the Governing Body will be openness and collaboration, fostering a real desire to help the College management team as much as possible to continually improve the overall outcomes and success of all the students.

This is an exciting time to join Shrewsbury Colleges Group as a governor playing a vital role to support thousands of students in the coming years.

About Shrewsbury Colleges Group

Shrewsbury Colleges Group plays a critical part in the education and training of young people, adults and apprentices in Shrewsbury, across Shropshire and nationally.

SCG gives students greater choices and dedicated subject resources at different campus locations and is proud to offer the largest and most flexible curriculum offer across Shropshire, comprising of A Levels, Vocational Diplomas, Apprenticeships and Higher Education qualifications.

The College works with around 9,000 students and employs 550 members of staff.  It enjoys significant strategic partnerships with schools, employers, universities, Shrewsbury Town Football Club, the Marches LEP, local authorities, combined authorities, the TUC and Erasmus.

Shrewsbury Colleges Group was formed in August 2016 through the merger of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and Shrewsbury College. The College is now Shropshire’s largest provider of post-16 education, teaching 70% of all 16-18 students in the County. The College operates from three campuses, offering academic and vocational excellence, as well as high quality on the job training through its Apprenticeship provision.

The College is the sixth form provision for seven schools in Shrewsbury and rural Shropshire, as well as working in partnership with 300 employers. It is also the largest provider of Higher Education courses in the county, offering degree, foundation degree, HNC/D and higher level professional courses. In total, Shrewsbury Colleges Group works with around 300 employers in partnership, to offer opportunities and to co-design curriculum.
