Dear Applicant,

Edwin Drummond of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

Cancer is one of the primary causes of illness and mortality worldwide. At The Royal Marsden we understand the need that this creates. We are one of the top cancer centres in the world and have had a significant impact on cancer research and the treatment of cancer, with our findings being shared across the globe. We treat patients from all over the UK and around the world and trial new cancer treatments more than any other UK specialist hospital. Our internationally renowned research means that we are able to give hope to people who often believe they have nowhere else to turn.

Every day, people’s lives are lengthened and improved immensely by our work. The hope and healing our staff provide aids not just the patient, but their families, friends and whole communities. But the face of cancer research is changing, and the number of people who need our help grows year on year – this is where The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity plays a vital role.

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raises money solely to support the hospital. We ensure our nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments. From funding state-of-the-art equipment and ground-breaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, we will never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer

Over the last three years, the charity has delivered an ambitious strategy to significantly grow our income. Alongside funding an existing world-class programme of research, treatment and care, we launched a new £70m capital appeal to build The Oak Cancer Centre – a clinical care and research centre to provide radical new solutions for the research and treatment of cancer.

We are now further expanding our Philanthropy Team by recruiting a Philanthropy Manager to contribute to our £70m appeal whilst also working with major donors to raise vital funds to support our hospital. This includes funding research, care programmes and multi-million pound equipment that will keep The Royal Marsden at the forefront of patient care, early diagnosis and innovative treatments.

Our Philanthropy Manager will play a key role in raising money for The Royal Marsden, helping us fund our vital work and deliver the largest fundraising appeal in the charity’s history. As Philanthropy Manager, you will support the management of Capital Appeal Board members and the recruitment of new Senior Volunteers and Ambassadors to identify and initiate relationships with prospective donors to raise five, six and seven figure gifts. You will also help develop new fundraising programmes to fund our wider hospital priorities. We are looking for an individual with a proven ability and passion for relationship management and donor acquisition, driving the delivery of our acquisition, donor-centric strategy for individual and corporate philanthropy.

We are a high performing team with huge ambition, and we are looking for an outstanding relationship fundraiser to complement our existing team. The Philanthropy Manager will be working with very high profile donors, so you will need first class stewardship skills and an ability to flourish in a demanding but enjoyable environment. You will be given autonomy to take ownership for work, with huge support from me and the rest of our senior management. Our tangible case for support is humbling and inspiring, providing a constant reminder of why we are here.
