The Principal/Chief Operating Officer will be responsible to and work under the general direction of the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Principal of St Mary’s College to provide outstanding, inspiring leadership to staff, students and the community of St Mary’s College.
The Principal/Chief Operating Officer will have responsibility for continuing to raise standards, both academically and pastorally, to ensure St Mary’s College retains its excellent reputation and achievements as an outstanding education provider. You will directly lead the smooth day-to-day running of the College under the general leadership of the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Principal of St Mary’s College and to deputise for him in his absence. You will lead a team with a core purpose to safeguard the welfare of children and young people.
As a leader you must demonstrate loyalty, professionalism and high standards of integrity and confidentiality within St Mary’s College, the Trust and the wider community. You will ensure the long-term success and continuing improvement of St Mary’s College and will have responsibility for ensuring the continuation of an outstanding standard of education and achievements for its students, maintaining its excellent reputation for being a school of choice for parents and their children. In keeping with the College’s strong ethos, you must understand SEND students’ needs to facilitate an inclusive school approach. You will provide leadership that is compassionate yet sets high expectations, provides healthy challenge and promotes spiritual development within the ethos of our Roman Catholic Trust of schools.
We are seeking candidates with Department for Education recognised qualified teacher status, and who can demonstrate a proven track record of either raising attainment or sustaining good or outstanding achievement and progress in a whole school environment. This is a great opportunity to use your skills in strategic planning and to develop and implement initiatives to further improve standards of teaching and learning in our College.
In consultation with the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Principal, you will be expected to make and present strategic recommendations to the board. You will be expected to have high order analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed judgements.
A key part of the role will be representing the College and promoting all the benefits and outreach programmes that we have to offer – you will be representing the school to all partners, stakeholders, prospective parents, the local community, press and the independent school sector. Therefore, you will be a natural and a compelling communicator who is able to present confidently and professionally to a range of audiences.

St Mary’s College converted as a Voluntary Catholic Academy in 2017, having been rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 2010.
The College is the biggest Catholic School in England, educating over 2,400 students aged 11 -19 including a sixth form with an intake of around 700. It is situated in north of the city, providing co-educational, non-selective education to students in Hull and East Riding with about 11% of the intake allocated the pupil premium.
St Mary’s College achieves high standards enjoying the status of being the top performing state school in area and is a recognised national leader of education running a successful Teaching School. Recently cited by the Department for Education as one of the top 100 schools in the country, it has been selected as one of only two lead schools for the World Class Schools network in the UK.
The College sits under the umbrella of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough which is home to 56 schools and academies providing Catholic education to almost 19,000 children and young people. The majority of the schools are members of the three Diocesan Catholic Academy Trusts, with St Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic Academy Trust running St Mary’s College and seven primary schools in the south of the Diocese.
