About the role

Incorporated in 2014, Pharm@Sea is a wholly owned subsidiary of Brighton and Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust providing outpatient pharmacy dispensing, vaccination and homecare services. With patient benefit at the heart of our approach, we were established to deliver improved quality of service. Our expert team focus on patient safety and are proud to offer class leading turnaround times for prescriptions. Our ongoing vision is to ensure that we continue to improve the patient experience through efficiency and innovation.

Who we're looking for

On our journey to continuous improvement, we are now looking to develop our expert board by introducing a new Non-Executive Director who will bring the expertise and focus to ensure each patient’s needs, journey and experience remains at the centre of our work.

We are looking for a strategic leader who is aligned to our commitment to ensure our operation innovates and evolves with the patient in mind at every step. You must be collaborative, self-assured and able to work effectively with a board comprised of clinicians, business people and wider NHS stakeholders. You will have had experience of a board level role and have had a professional strategic role which has focused on customer/patient experience. You will know how to understand customer/patient needs then translate these into strategic development and action.

This will be a highly rewarding role requiring a time commitment of 18 days per year and with meetings held in Brighton.

Thank you for your interest in the role of Non-Executive Director (Patient Advocate) at Pharm@Sea Limited.

This is a key role on the Board of Directors at a pivotal time for us strategically. As we navigate the challenges of service delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re discovering new risks and indeed opportunities that could have significant implications on our future operating model. It is and will always be critical that our patients remain at the heart of everything that we do.

The aim of the role is to bring Board-level stewardship to support how we improve the patient experience alongside the commercial drivers of our service delivery. We are keen to receive applications from people who have substantial board and patient or customer experience as well as demonstrable business acumen. We would like a leader who shares our passion for first class services and is committed to increasing our impact with the NHS Trust that we serve.

Pharm@Sea Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. We were established in 2014 to provide a new approach to the delivery of outpatient pharmacy services. This is an exciting time to join the Board as we embark on our journey to enhance service provision within the Trust that we serve. This will provide a sustainable platform from which we can drive innovation and efficiency.

Our service provision sits somewhere between Community and Hospital Inpatient Pharmacy, with participation of high cost drugs in complex prescriptions increasing. This brings its own challenges, to ensure as a business we can continue to deliver benefit realisation to our parent Trust and the wider NHS whilst remaining independent and compliant with statutory and regulatory requirements at all times.

To succeed at delivering class leading performance we must continue to be agile and efficient in all areas of the business to enable us to contribute effectively to the NHS HealthCare environment.

Our ambition to deliver first class outpatient pharmacy services is unrelenting. Our commitment, in everything we do, centres on improving the patient experience. This is a pivotal role in ensuring that we bring these ambitions to fruition.

About Pharm@Sea Ltd

Established in 2014, Pharm@Sea Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Brighton & Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust and provides pharmacy outpatient dispensing, vaccination and homecare services. Operating with a patient-centred approach, Pharm@Sea was established to provide a step change in the delivery of outpatient services and improve the experience and quality of service. We focus on delivering safe and efficient services with a rigorous approach to clinical governance accompanied by class leading turnaround times for prescriptions.

We currently operate from one site in Brighton and, as well as providing enhanced patient benefits, we generate a surplus for our shareholding Trust, a surplus that is reinvested in our local healthcare ecosystem. Our model improves the satisfaction of our patients and customers by improving prescription dispensing times through efficiency and innovation. We have an automated picking system which manages high stock volume inventory of medicines and an expert team who are clinically and customer service trained.

We continue to develop our services around our patients needs and have an enduring focus on improving the patient experience.

We have recently moved to delivering our prescriptions into the community, in response to COVID-19, and are keen to explore new business model changes and innovations further.

  • Experienced businessman, NED and funding adviser to start ups and growing business;
  • Extensive expertise in commercial and financial drivers of success;
  • Depth of knowledge on trading models, independence risk and governance.

Non-Executive Director – Martyn Wilks

  • Commercial career in large corporates including Mars, Dairy Crest and Hovis Foods;
  • Strengths in general management, HR, and all elements of business development, including branding, marketing and sales.
