Newbury College is a further education college in the southern outskirts of Newbury, offering high-quality teaching and learning, alongside creating opportunities for individuals and employers in West Berkshire and the surrounding areas.

From our state-of-the-art campus and community venues, we offer a wide range of programmes in engineering, digital, construction and building technology, health and social care, leadership and management, public services, sport and much more.

With a team of professional and dedicated staff, we help support all students as they embark on their journey with us, in a safe and productive environment — with an outstanding support service, industry links and career progression.

With key industry links, we look to support the transition into employment with work experience opportunities and an ambitious and innovative curriculum. Our on-site University Centre Newbury (UCN) give us a unique and clear progression up to degree level and postgraduate studies.

We believe in “careers not courses,” designing full-time, career-focused programmes with vocational qualifications, maths and English GSCEs, and work-related activities and experiences — along with professional part-time and apprenticeship programmes for adults.

Working with fantastic local employers, we offer a variety of apprenticeships for all ages, with a dedicated business development team and experienced career coaches to ensure success for both the apprentice and their employer.

We also have an excellent student services team and partners to support all students. We specialise in specific learning needs, helping some of the less advantaged to excel in their education and community and aid them in achieving meaningful outcomes.

About the role of Governor

As a further education (FE) college, Newbury College is required (by the Further and Higher Education Act 1992) to have a governing board known as the Newbury College Corporation.

The main role of the Corporation is to oversee the way the college is run — to make sure it delivers what its community needs in a way that reflects the highest professional and ethical standards, and to make effective use of the resources it has available.

As a collective group of independent members, our board is responsible for the quality of service that the College offers to students and the local community, as well as for approving and monitoring the College’s annual budget. Our committed and experienced Board is comprised of people who present a range of career backgrounds, and specialist industry alongside sector knowledge. We ask that new Governors become members of both the board and at least one other committee, depending on their specialist knowledge and interests. In addition to attending scheduled meetings throughout the year, we encourage Governors to experience the College by linking them with senior managers and different departments, providing opportunities for them to visit the campuses and meet and speak with students and staff.

The Governors’ central role is to set the strategic direction of the College, and to monitor progress in achieving the strategic objectives. All Governors are required to abide by the board’s Code of Conduct, which is based on the seven principles of public life (the ‘Nolan’ principles) — selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Who we are looking for

Finance Governor

We are looking to appoint a qualified Chartered Accountant and senior finance professional, skilled in accountancy and business strategy, working at a mid to senior leadership level. You should have a broad understanding of governance and the role of a finance and resources committee. While your experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector, you should have experience of either being part of a non-executive body or having reported to one. The successful applicant will take leadership of the Finance and Resource Committee.

What matters most is that Governors are passionate about our mission, enthusiastic about joining the Newbury College and are keen to contribute to our future success.

You will support the development and influence the direction of the College at a time of great momentum as we seek to grow the organisation and aspire to provide outstanding, meaningful education opportunities for students across the local and wider communities.
