The Institute for Family Business (IFB) is the voice of the UK family business sector, supporting and promoting the contribution of the sector to UK economy.

As a not-for-profit membership association, we proudly support and promote the UK family-owned business sector through networking and learning activities, advocacy and research. Britain’s 4.8 million family businesses are the backbone of the UK economy – employing close to 13 million people, and contributing a quarter of UK GDP.

The IFB’s impact cannot be underestimated, with our membership having a combined turnover approaching £100 billion and includes some of the most well-known and loved brands in the UK.

Who we're looking for

We are pleased to announce that we are searching for a new Membership & Development Director. This is a key leadership and relationship management role within the IFB, with the primary purpose is to lead the IFB’s membership growth, development and retention. You will have the unique opportunity to develop and execute a membership strategy that delivers sustained membership growth, strong retention, enduring relationships with family business owners and which improves peer learning and business knowledge within the sector.

Equally, you will be part of framing and delivering a commercial partnership programme that delivers quality, value enhancing relationships and brand associations. A key part of the role will be to develop, drive and deliver IFB membership growth, with the support of the Director General and a Membership & Events Manager, to establish strong and enduring relationships with family business owners and to develop, enhance and communicate the IFB’s value proposition to members.

Your experience and background

You will come with first class relationship development and management skills with the ability to manage a variety of sometimes complex and demanding stakeholder relationships. A proven track record of delivering effective marketing programmes and the ability to think strategically but also have an eye for detail and be prepared to be hands on will be key. A track record in identifying and exploiting commercial opportunities will be vital. Excellent interpersonal, diplomacy and communication skills, and be an enthusiastic team player is needed. Finally, you will come with genuine passion and enthusiasm for the value of private sector business of which family business make up the 88%.

Thank you for the interest in the position of Membership and Development Director at the Institute for Family Business (IFB).

We are a small and dynamic team based in Central London (Victoria), dedicated to supporting family businesses in all the areas that are unique to them because of the family ownership. We help families understand some of the challenges they may come up against, and provide them with the tools they need to pre-empt problems or resolve issues that have already cropped up.

The IFB is the heart and voice of the family business community in the UK with members from all sectors, from across the UK and from small to medium sized and large firms. From founder led businesses at the stage of succession planning to multi-generation businesses who have celebrated more than one centenary already.

We were founded by a group of family businesses nearly 20 years ago as a place for them to come together to share their experiences and learn from each other. That is still at the heart of what we offer to our members today.

Members also benefit from our extensive learning and events programme, our practical support and guidance, and our working with Government. All this is delivered in a non-solicitous, safe and trusted space for the family businesses and the individual family members and executives.

We work closely and collaboratively as a team to deliver support to the family businesses we work with, and achieve our organisational goals. We also work closely with our Board of Directors and Committees who are made up of highly supportive members of the organisation.

We have a strategy in place that takes us to the end of our financial year in June 2022 which is firmly focused on membership growth through recruitment and retention. The role of Membership and Development Director is a critical role to the delivery of our strategic objectives.

It’s important that you are comfortable with people at all levels of an organisation from very senior people to young members of the family who haven’t yet made up their minds about whether they want to be involved in their family business.  You will also need to build strong relationships with members of the advisory community who work with many of the family businesses in our membership.

The role will require that some of your time is spent ‘on the road’ meeting existing and prospective members. Some international travel may also be required as we are part of a global network of similar family business organisations.
