Members Nova Education Trust

Nova Education Trust provides aspirant educational opportunities for over 10,000 children across its 15 primary and secondary schools in the East Midlands. The Trust is seeking to appoint two high profile and influential leaders with excellent links to the area. They will require regional insight of current and future skills needs in order to be an effective governance guardian and passionate ambassador for our Trust.

  • Location: Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
  • Closing date: CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS

The Nova Education Trust governance structure is made up of Members, and the Board of Trustees. Trustees are accountable to the Members and responsible for the Trust’s oversight of core governance functions, the development of strategy and conducting the business of the Trust. Each of our 15 schools benefit from their own local governing body (LGB) and the LGB Chairs meet with the Chair of Trustees on a termly basis.

Members are guardians of the Trust’s governance rather than key decision-makers and sit at the top of the governance structure. They are essential to the integrity of the organisation’s governance, as they hold the Board to account for the effective strategic oversight of the Trust.

At Nova Education Trust, and in line with Department for Education guidance, we have five Members who have the collective ability to control changes to the Constitution, subject to DfE approval, and the right to remove Trustees. Members are an essential function to prevent the failure of a Trust and ensure good and effective governance.  New Members are appointed by the current serving Members and there is no fixed term of office for the role.

Members meet three times a year, including the annual general meeting, to review the performance of the Trust as set out in the Articles of Association.

Nova Education Trust is seeking to appoint two locally connected leaders with a high profile within their area of expertise and strong personal or professional links to the East Midlands. As ‘guardians of governance’, both Members must have significant leadership and governance experience in order to effectively oversee the work of the Trustee Board. It is important that both Members are able to demonstrate a passion for supporting the delivery of exceptional standards of education and excellent outcomes for children.

With significant experience of education and educational leadership already represented within the current group of Members, we are now seeking to appoint influential leaders from significant regional businesses or industry. We welcome their leadership expertise, experience of the East Midlands regional economy, and their wider business and community networks for the benefit of the Trust and its young people.

The Trust aspires to provide the highest standards of education and best pathways into further and higher education, training and employment for their 10,000 strong and growing cohort of children. The leadership team, Members and Trustees are committed to building a culture of civic partnerships, collaborations with other academy trusts and schools, the local authorities, community organisations and employers. Through working in true partnership, the Trust can provide opportunities that secure successful futures for our young people.

Who we are looking for

As well as being able to commit to attending three meetings a year, you must also be a willing and passionate advocate and ambassador for the Trust, committed to understanding and promoting its educational mission to Work Hard and Be Kind.

We strongly encourage applications from a diverse range of candidates who reflect the different communities across the East Midlands region. If you are keen to be involved in shaping the education and future opportunities as part of Nova Education Trust, please contact:

Welcome from the Chair of Trustees

Dear applicant,

Thank you for your interest in volunteering your time to make an impact right at the heart of Nova Education Trust. I hope that you will find this pack useful and informative in helping you to complete your application.

Members are essential to the integrity of an academy trust as they are the guardians of the governance of the trust. It is a rewarding role in which Members must be satisfied that the standard of governance across the trust is high while keeping at ‘arm’s length’ from both operational activities of the executive team and governance decisions taken by the board of trustees.

Since its inception in 2011, the Nova Education trust has successfully supported a number of secondary and primary schools, including some with significant challenges, to help them secure improved educational standards and bring about lasting change. In total, the trust now comprises 15 academies (five primaries, nine secondaries and one sixth-form college) and has partnership arrangements to support other groups of schools across the region.  Across the academies in the trust, education is provided for around 10,000 pupils. It employs around 1,500 staff and has a budget of almost £60m.  The trust is also a key player in the region developing new teachers and providing training and development programmes for existing teachers throughout their careers.

As Chair of Trustees, I know first-hand the commitment required of existing members, trustees and executives in ensuring that Nova fosters and nurtures a great learning and working environment across the whole Trust.  We are united in our commitment to become the local Trust of choice, where learners and staff feel valued, nurtured and supported to be the very best versions of themselves in an environment where sustainability, cultural inclusivity, and a healthy approach to wellbeing sit at the core.

We are looking for an aspirational and intelligent individual who cares about building transformational child-centred learning communities and has the imagination, passion and experience to support and challenge us to even greater things in the service of our young people.   An individual who shares our values;

  • of honesty, integrity, humility, and professionalism.
  • Is trustworthy and loyal to others: we are committed to demonstrating a selfless commitment in all that we do.
  • Is innovative: we remain open to learning from others.
  • believes that we all learn together: in our vibrant, creative, diverse and inclusive family of schools.
  • Is highly ambitious for us with a selfless commitment and generosity to others: supporting our staff and students to believe that through hard work, all can succeed and grow.

About the Organisation

The Nova Education Trust is a cross-phase Multi-Academy Trust based in the East Midlands. Our family is currently made up of 15 academies (five primaries, nine secondaries and one sixth form college). In 2019, we entered a long-term support partnership with Madani Schools Federation in Leicester to work with their two schools. With approximately 1200 staff we support over 10,000 children.

Established in 2011, the Trust has successfully supported schools of all phases to secure improved educational standards. We deliver exceptional educational support with access to curriculum and pastoral groups, and support in areas such as safeguarding, governance and other central service functions.  The Trust runs a successful School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme which links 23 schools together sharing effective practice and developing new models for staff development. We are therefore a key player in the region by developing new teachers and providing training and development programmes for existing teachers and support/operational staff throughout their careers.  Central to our mission is addressing equality, diversity and inclusion as we resolutely promote a diverse and inclusive community – a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit.

The Trust has a clear governance structure with the Board of Trustees as the legal accountable body for Nova Education Trust and they are responsible to the Secretary of State for Education for the effectiveness of each of the trust schools. Trustees have established one local governing board for each school, with a key role to provide local input into school plans, budgets, community and stakeholder engagement and to review alignment with Nova strategy, approach, ethos and vision. This approach enables schools to still belong to their communities and for governors to be significant and valued partners in the life of their school.

The well-being of every student and quality of education is of primary importance to us and we offer a high level of pastoral care and guidance. Our approach to behaviour is simple with the expectation that all staff and students will follow the Nova  Education Trust ethos to “work hard and be kind”.

The Nova Education Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

Accessibility

Nova Education Trust’s accessibility statement applies to 15 schools that make up the Trust. We aspire to allow as many as possible to be able to access our schools easily and navigate through them without barriers. Where our schools are not accessible, or where we can provide different formats of work materials to allow access, we welcome individuals to contact us.

Some examples of our accessibility provisions include:

  • Step-free access to the building, all key meeting rooms and bathrooms, and an accessible workstation
  • Interviews can be held in meeting rooms that support hearing loops
  • Papers and materials can be presented in different formats
  • A sign language interpreter can be accessed for interview
  • Working patterns and locations can be adjusted

We are working to show both our existing employees and future candidates that EDI is a core value of our trust and that we are taking practical steps to address where we need to improve.

We are currently in the process of working to launch a new EDI strategy to establish workplace initiatives required to develop our trust.  We welcome new recruits to be able to contribute to our goals to help us assess where we are now, what we are doing well and what needs developing to create a strong delivery plan. Our engagement with wider stakeholders, such as the above, will be linked to our plan and will inform our overall commitment to EDI.
