University of Nottingham Students’ Union (UoNSU) is looking for skilled HR and financial leaders to join their board as they provide excellent support, representation and services for over 38,000 students whilst embarking on a new period of strategic delivery.

Who we are

The University of Nottingham Students’ Union (UoNSU) is an independent £10 million charity that represents the 38,000+ students that study at Nottingham. This exceeds 42,000 if you include their students who study in Malaysia and China.

They believe in better – providing a wide and diverse range of clubs and societies and representing students on the issues that matter most – from mental health and sexual violence support to housing and teaching standards.

UoNSU is student-led, operating in the best interest of the community it represents. Each year, they elect 8 full-time Sabbatical Officers who advocate for their peers, sit on the Students’ Union’s board, and serve as the face of the charity – the bridge between the student body and the changes they want to see.

They work with other democratically-elected student representatives in partnership with the University, making the student voice heard at all levels.

About the roles

Following the pandemic, the subsequent rise in the cost of living, and an uncertain political landscape, the Students’ Union’s support is needed now more than ever.

The Students’ Union’s social enterprises provide affordable and environmentally-minded shops and venues for students to socialise, make friends and build communities.

Their staff support students to run their own clubs – from academic and literature groups to sports and dance teams, to volunteering and wider hobbies, and UoNSU’s advice service provides non-judgemental help and guidance to service users on a range of pressing issues.

With the Students’ Union starting a strategy cycle, it is an exciting time to join them.

Their board provides strategic oversight and scrutiny, working with the executive team to look towards the future, ensuring the organisation meets its charitable objectives and operates in the best interests of its members.

Who we are looking for

UoNSU is looking for two trustees with experience in finance or HR to become board members and sit on one sub-committee. Given their significant income, sound financial scrutiny is a key priority.

In addition, they want to ensure that the Students’ Union is a competitive employer that empowers staff through comprehensive learning and development opportunities and an inclusive working atmosphere and culture.

As a trustee, you will sit alongside other lay trustees who bring specialist expertise and student trustees to guide the Students’ Union’s strategic direction and implementation – providing a sounding board and acting as a critical friend. Individuals with the requisite emotional intelligence, an open mind, and a collaborative style are especially suited for this board.

Time commitment

The time commitment is 7-8 engagements a year. This consists of 4 board meetings a year, each lasting 3 hours, and attendance of one hybrid sub-committee which meets three times per year.

Dates are given well in advance and attending the meetings in person is strongly encouraged and preferred, but trustees can attend online on occasion if required.

This pack contains some background information on the Students’ Union and details of the responsibilities that sitting on the Board of Trustees entails.

Serving as an external (Lay) Trustee can be an incredibly rewarding and valuable way of making a positive contribution to the Nottingham student body. as well as developing your skills and experience.

We’re looking for candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds and experience – please do consider applying!

The last few years have been incredibly difficult for many, both in wider society and for students. Responding to the changing world and supporting students in Nottingham has never been more important. This is an exciting time to be joining UoNSU as we look to respond to these challenges.

This role will provide the opportunity to really shape the Students’ Union and help improve the experience for our students, both now and in the future.

We want our students to feel welcome and be able to thrive as part of an active and diverse community. We are striving to become a more inclusive workplace and to better represent the student community that we serve.

We’re the Students’ Union for the thousands of students studying at Nottingham.

UoNSU is an independent, student-led organisation that represents students’ needs, protects students’ rights and makes their voices heard.

All students who study at Nottingham are automatically members – from the day they arrive to the day they graduate and beyond.

We are developing our academic service, support services, and our student voice framework to ensure students remain at the heart of the learning experience. We share best practise, act as credible advisors and commentators – working with our partner University and student leaders to shape learning journeys.

  • Build our student community

We are growing participation from across our student community, focusing on students from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds. All students should have a sense of belonging, positive well-being, and access to an inclusive, engaging, and relevant Union that provides a rich array of extra-curricular opportunities.

We encourage and celebrate the student leaders who add value to their community.

  • Improve student lives

We want to be experts in the wider student experience with a deep understanding of the challenges that affect students outside their classes, lectures and seminars.

By developing and negotiating solutions we are reducing burdens and identifying positive solutions on the issues that affect our students the most – from finance and housing to employability and well-being.

  • Portland Coffee – Our coffee shop; a warm, welcoming venue for students to work and socialise

  • Spar – A Spar shop for essentials on both Jubilee and University Park campuses
  • SUstainable – Our zero-waste shop provides food and essentials completely free from plastic packaging
