About Kendal College

Set in the heart of a picturesque market town on the edge of the Lake District National Park, Kendal College provides a diverse range of education and training provision which includes full-time and part-time courses, Higher Education, and apprenticeships.

As a vital part of our local community, the College also offers a range of adult education provision, supporting individuals to upskill or retrain to get them back in to the jobs market and improve their employment chances. Alongside this, we provide a range of opportunities which support local employers too.

Through all of this provision, we provide education and training to over 3,500 people from across North Lancashire and the South Lakes.

We might be a small College, but we do a lot. The breadth and depth of our offer is wide and varied. We have big ambitions.”

Kelvin Nash, Principal, Kendal College

All of this speaks to our overarching vision which demonstrates our determination to provide outstanding education and training opportunities that are responsive to the needs of our community.

All of our provision is currently delivered across two campuses: our award-winning main site on Milnthorpe Road, along with our Arts and Media Campus. As demand for our provision has increased, our College has had the need to grow further.

As such, we are now at an exciting point of our development with capital build projects ongoing, and the recent purchase and ongoing refurbishment of a local shopping centre; meaning that in the next few years, we will become a three-campus College.

Role description

Whilst we are excited to be on this journey of growth and development, and have support from across our local community, there is a need for us to be mindful of what our future looks like and the additional challenges that our growth may bring.

As such, we are now seeking to appoint a new member to join our Governing Board. The Postholder will need to be suitably qualified with professional, financial expertise. Previous Board experience will be beneficial as they will also take on the leadership of our Finance and Resources Working Group which continues to support and challenge the College on its growth and development journey.

Our Finance and Resources Working Group is a vital part of our wider Governing Body, which was established to help improve the financial health of the College.

This Group, so far, has been instrumental in offering expertise and guidance regarding things such as our capital build projects. This positive impact is due to a number of factors, such as the level of credibility held by Working Group members, along with the healthy relationship of respect and challenge between them and our senior leaders.

“Those other Governors who have joined us recently have been surprised by the amount we do. They have all been very impressed with the College and there is a great appreciation for the Senior Leadership Team, and a respect for what we each do.”

John Thedham, Chair of Corporation, Kendal College

We would particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience of improving organisational financial health, delivering capital build projects, and those from commercial backgrounds.

Our new Working Group Chair will also have a demonstrable understanding of good governance, understand the differing responsibilities of Governors and senior leaders and will preferably have previous experience of as a Committee Chair.

The time commitment will be approximately 30 to 40 hours per academic year, which will consist of attending Board meetings and carrying out additional duties as required.
