Young Citizens seeks to equip young people with skills and resources to contribute to civic society. We have recently published our brand new strategy, lighting the spark which focuses on our growth and increasing our impact. We now seek an operationally astute Executive Director for at least 6 months as maternity cover for our CEO, Ashley Hodges.

  • Salary: £57,000 - 60,000 per annum pro-rated DOE

Who we are

Our mission at Young Citizens is to provide transformative learning experiences that ignite a lifelong passion for active citizenship. Through immersive programs and inspiring resources, we equip young people with knowledge about democracy, skills to engage with complex societal issues, and the confidence to participate effectively. This education empowers them to shape their communities, institutions, and society, fostering lifelong habits of engagement.

In our three-decade history, we’ve mobilized over 300,000 young individuals to take social action, engaged 150,000 in understanding the law, and reached 1 million with classroom resources. With 20+ staff across the UK, 19 corporate partners, 100+ online classroom resources, 2,000 professionals participating in volunteering, and 450,000+ children reached annually, our impact is significant.

We are proud to remain financially successful: with a £1 million turnover, funding from various sources including grants, donations, subscriptions, and consultancy work, we’ve adapted to shifts in funding sources. While previously reliant on central government funding, we’ve diversified our income streams, integrating social enterprise and mission-related commercial activities. Our new strategy emphasizes a mix of funders, corporate partnerships, major donations, and fundraising to ensure sustainability.

The impact we make on young citizens requires steadfast leadership. As our CEO, Ashley Hodges will be taking maternity leave, we seek an outstanding interim Executive Director to ensure that we remain operationally excellent, deliver on our strategic objectives, and drive sustainable income generation. Our new leader will uphold our mission, steer Young Citizens through growth and change, and continue fostering impactful partnerships. The ability to manage relationships, develop funding sources, and represent our vision is essential to ensuring our mission of empowering active, informed citizens thrives in the interim CEO’s absence.

About the role

As our Interim Executive Director, you will play a pivotal role in steering Young Citizens’ operational direction for at least a six-month period. You’ll be at the helm of the organisation, ensuring effective governance, sound financial management, and consistent service delivery. Your responsibility encompasses overseeing daily operations, guiding the senior leadership team, and enabling the Board to fulfil its governance duties. Collaborating with the Finance and Operations department, you’ll monitor progress and alignment with our business plan and long-term objectives. Your dynamic leadership will drive the organisation’s success, impacting our annual campaigns, funding diversification, and overall impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the senior leadership team in achieving their annual objectives for the year 2023-24.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Operations to ensure budgets and operating plans align with the business plan and delivery goals.
  • Enable the Board in fulfilling its governance duties, providing informed advice and insights.
  • Provide hands-on leadership, overseeing challenges, priorities, and daily operations.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, driving operational excellence and learning.
  • Support public relations and communications efforts, ensuring impactful campaigns.
  • Steward major partnerships, engaging key stakeholders and funders.
  • Act as a spokesperson for Young Citizens, representing us at events and with decision-makers.
  • Lead efforts to demonstrate and communicate the impact of our work, safeguarding our reputation.

Who we are looking for

Our ideal Interim Executive Director is an experienced senior executive with a strong track record in not-for-profit or similar settings. You possess a deep understanding of operational strategy and business models in a scaled, national delivery environment. Your proven experience in overseeing national education interventions gives you the insight needed to navigate challenges and seize opportunities. You’re comfortable leading a high-capacity team, managing budgets, and making data-driven decisions.

Your collaborative leadership style inspires accountability, high performance, and ongoing development within the senior team. Your ability to manage change, navigate diverse stakeholder dynamics, and advocate for our mission will drive our success during this critical period. About Young Citizens

We began as a vision in the late 1960s when Andrew Phillips (The Baron Phillips of Sudbury) saw a gap in legal education for the youth. He initiated experimental lessons about the law’s role in our democratic society, which led to the formation of the Citizenship Foundation in 1989. With Andrew’s dedication and the support of pioneers Don Rowe and Tony Thorpe, we’ve empowered young individuals to become engaged citizens.

Our work extends to helping thousands of young people experience active citizenship through educational resources and experiences. We’ve advocated for the inclusion of Citizenship in the national curriculum and continue to push for effective teaching and support. Evolving to meet new challenges, we rebranded as Young Citizens in 2018, focusing on our youthful beneficiaries.

Young Citizens exists to empower and educate young people, equipping them with essential life skills and knowledge to actively participate in society as informed and responsible citizens. At the heart of our mission lies a commitment to preparing young people for active participation in democratic processes and the wider world. We aim to create a generation of engaged and knowledgeable citizens who are making positive contributions to their communities and beyond.

One of our core initiatives involves delivering interactive programs that emphasize the importance of democracy, the rule of law, and individual rights and responsibilities.

These programs are designed to spark lively discussions and engage young learners in exploring complex topics related to citizenship, justice, and ethics.
