Join FareShare as their Interim Director of Finance and make an immediate difference to the organisation in their mission to maximise the social value of surplus food.

  • Location: London/Hybrid
  • Salary: £80,000-100,000
  • Closing date: 9 a.m. Monday 4th December 2023

Employment Type: Interim (6 months)

Who we are

FareShare turns an environmental problem into social good. By giving surplus food to frontline charitable organisations in local communities, FareShare helps tackle hunger and its causes. These vital charities and community groups create meals for individuals who are homeless, unemployed and socially isolated. At FareShare, we believe that no good food should go to waste.

We source food and operate the supply chain and logistics to deliver that food to the 36 warehouses within our network across the UK.  We also provide operational support to the warehouses, and promote the sharing of best practice across the network especially in the areas of health and safety and efficiency improvement.

With food inflation and the cost-of-living crisis in the UK, more people than ever suffer from food poverty, so FareShare’s vital role in sourcing and providing food to vulnerable people is critical. We work with over 500 companies across the food chain from farmers to hauliers, hospitality chains to supermarkets, and big brands to small, independent producers, and, during 2021-22, we supported 9,462 charities who in turn supported an estimated 985,933 people.

About the role

FareShare has grown beyond all recognition in the last six years. We have experienced incredible income growth for a previously small charity. To support this, the organisation needs strong and longer-term financial and resource planning to deliver its ambitions.

This challenging role works alongside the Chief Executive to lead FareShare’s financial planning and accounting and reports to the Finance Sub Committee and the full Board of Trustees. The role is responsible for ensuring that the organisation is deploying its resources efficiently to deliver its mission and is doing so in a long-term sustainable manner.

To achieve this, we seek a strong candidate with strong leadership and management skills to lead the whole organisation with a clear, compelling and deliverable strategy to best deploy our resources.

The post holder is required to be a leading voice and driver in the organisation’s leadership team combining vision and excellent communication skills to steer the direction of the organisation forward.

This post is within the senior leadership team, alongside colleagues and the Chief Executive and they will attend all Trustee Board meetings.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a qualified, capable Director of Finance who has the ability to hit the ground running and help the organisation through a period of rapid change.

Operational and business management experience in disciplines other than finance, alongside experience of change management of systems/processes and culture in a fast moving and complex environment is required.

You will be pro-active in building cross-departmental collaboration and have excellent organisational networking, project management, negotiation and report writing skills.

About FareShare

We believe that no good food should go to waste. We redistribute surplus food to charities that turn it into meals.

FareShare is the UK’s longest-running food redistribution charity. We were born out of the belief that no good food should go to waste, especially when people are going hungry. This belief is as central to our work now as it was 25 years ago.

FareShare was co-founded by the homeless charity Crisis and Sainsbury’s with the first depot opened in London. Over the next 10 years, it expanded by opening regional centres across the UK using a social franchise model and in 2004, became an independent charity.

The charity has expanded significantly and now operates with 36 centres. It has won numerous awards including ‘Britain’s Most Admired Charity’ and Charity of the Year at the Third Sector and the Charity Times awards.

Our vision

We have the vision of a UK where “No good food goes to waste”.

Our mission

To use surplus, fit for consumption, food to feed those who are vulnerable in the UK by supporting front line charitable organisations that tackle the cause and not just the symptoms of food poverty.

Our impact

Millions of tonnes of good food is wasted by the UK food industry every year. At the same time, millions of people are struggling to afford to eat. Our work addresses these two issues by redistributing food industry surplus, which would otherwise go to waste, to the people who need it most.

Over 3 million tonnes of food wasted across the food industry each year is good-to-eat when it’s discarded.

That good-to-eat wasted food is enough for an estimated 7 billion meals. That food should be helping frontline organisations support their communities, rather than going to waste.

Meanwhile, over 13 million people in the UK struggle to get enough to eat (9.3 million adults and 4 million children). Those numbers have soared as a result of the cost-of-living crisis. There are more people in food insecurity now than there were at the height of the pandemic.

We strengthen communities by taking good food, that would otherwise go to waste, and getting it to local charities who use it to support people in their communities. The organisations we support cover 99% of the UK with 57% operating in the most deprived 30% of areas in the UK.

Getting food to people helps avoid long-term costs to health and social services. Research by The University of Hertfordshire into FareShare’s Social Return on Investment found that our work saves the UK £225 million per year – meaning every £1 invested in FareShare delivers £5.72 in social value.

Who we work with

FareShare is designed to take large volumes of surplus food from the food industry. We then divert it to our UK-wide network of 8,500 frontline charities and community groups.

FareShare has 25 years’ experience working with the food industry to get good quality surplus onto the plates of vulnerable people.

We work with more than 500 companies across the supply chain – from farmers to hauliers, hospitality chains to supermarkets, and big brands to small, independent producers.
