Certsure has huge potential in an industry with an exciting future. We are recruiting an Independent Chair to acquire additional high-level strategic and commercial expertise, and to ensure that the interests of our shareholders, Electrical Safety First and Electrical Contractors' Association, are managed impartially as each organisation grows and evolves.
Certsure has huge potential in an industry with an exciting future. Electricity is at the heart of the climate change agenda, low carbon transportation and with the rise of electronic products and technologies connecting and exchanging data such as in the ‘smart home’ with lighting, heating, security, growth opportunities are rife.
Set up as a joint venture partnership Certsure delivers products and services that ensure the standards and competency of people undertaking electrical work. This ensures the safety of both tradespeople and consumers and Certsure is therefore playing an increasingly important role in our society.
Until now the Certsure Board has been chaired in rotation by the Chief Executives of Electrical Safety First (ESF) and Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), as the parent organisations and shareholders. Collaboration and partnership is at the heart of the venture, and this has worked well.
There is now an aspiration to develop the arrangement and recruit an Independent Chair. This is principally to acquire additional high-level strategic and commercial support for Certsure, and to ensure that both the independence and complexities of the relationship are managed as impartially as possible in the future as all three organisations grow and evolve.
Remuneration: c.£24,000 p.a. with flexibility on contractual arrangements (one day per week).
Certsure is looking for an Independent Chair who can confidently line manage, support and coach Certsure’s Managing Director to ensure that Certsure is increasingly efficient and effective in delivering its operations. The Independent Chair will also have the sophistication and experience to impartially and professionally manage complex stakeholder relationships, particularly the interests of the parent organisations (ESF and ECA) to ensure that their aspirations are delivered through Certsure.
Initially you will need to work closely with the ECA and ESF to gain clarity about their needs, aspirations and to agree shared expectations. Developing a clearer strategy for Certsure and objectives that both shareholders can sign up to is critical.
With the need to continue to deliver a successful commercial business, as well as value for its members and stakeholders, we need somebody who has worked in a similar context and is able to understand the nuances and complexities of such a venture. This could have been gained through a public / private partnership, a trading company of a public or non-profit organisation, or from a commercial spin out venture from a public institution.
High-level commercial and financial skills need to be balanced with appropriate values and a recognition that Certsure’s activity needs to align with, and compliment, the ECA and ESF who may at times be working to different agendas and objectives. Ensuring the safety of commercial trades and domestic electricity users across the UK should motivate you as much as supporting the commercial success of Certsure does.
We would prefer to appoint from outside of our immediate sectors and networks. Somebody with knowledge, contacts and networks in the electrical sector may not have the independent perspectives and impartiality that we are keen to attract in this role. An appreciation of certification, commercial & consumer standards and safety, professional training & development or retail & e-commerce may however be useful.
Most important is your experience of chairing similarly complex joint venture arrangements, and your ability to bring strong strategic business, financial and commercial acumen to Certsure for the Managing Director and Executive Team to benefit from. We need somebody with a supportive, coaching style who is happy to facilitate others to succeed rather than need the limelight themselves.
The opportunity to support three fantastic executives teams and their board members, and ultimately to advance their agendas and support greater success for the electrical sector, will be a legacy you can look back on in the future and be proud of.
