Dear Applicant,

Michael McTernan - Imperial College London for executive recruitment

I’m delighted that you’re interested in joining our team as our new Senior International Relations Officer (Americas).

Imperial College London is the UK’s only university uniquely focused on science, technology, medicine and business. Consistently rated amongst the world’s best universities, Imperial is committed to developing the next generation of researchers, scientists and academics through collaboration across disciplines.

Located in the heart of London, and expanding with our exciting new White City Innovation Campus, Imperial is a multidisciplinary space for education, research, translation and commercialisation, harnessing science and innovation to tackle global challenges.

The International Relations Office (IRO) is a busy, highly-visible central unit responsible for supporting the development and delivery of the College’s international engagement with academic partners and overseas governments (two-thirds of Imperial research involves an international collaborator, spanning more than 130 countries, making us one of the world’s most international universities).

We are seeking a Senior International Relations Officer (Americas) to join us for a 12 month maternity cover contract. You will work closely with the Vice President (International) and myself, as well as senior academics from across the four Faculties, to play a key role in developing, supporting and implementing academic partnership strategies with a region that is of major importance to Imperial. The regional focus of the role is North, Central and South America, with a particular focus on partnerships with the US.

Key to this role will be taking a vital lead in identifying emerging opportunities for the College to develop international peer-to-peer academic and government partnerships in the Americas, ultimately to help address global challenges and attract the best global talent. This will include identifying opportunities for collaboration and partnership that align with major government policy initiatives (e.g UK Industrial Strategy, UK International Research and Innovation Strategy), both in the UK and in the region. As part of this, you will promote the College’s interests externally, to organisations including foreign embassies based in the UK, British embassies overseas, collaborating peer institutions, funding agencies, FCO, UKRI, and consortia partners.

I’m particularly looking for someone with a strategic and analytical mind-set, with a successful track record of working consultatively to develop strategies. Importantly, you will come with professional credibility, intellectual depth, maturity, and collaborative skills to garner trust and confidence of academic colleagues, members of the College’s leadership team, and external partners.

If you would like to have an informal conversation about this opportunity you can contact our advising consultants at Peridot Partners, John Powley (M: 07753 249383 or E: john@peridotpartners.co.uk) or James Hunt (M: 07711 405444 or E: james@peridotpartners.co.uk).

Warm regards,

Michael McTernan
Head, International Relations Office

Executive recruitment, Imperial College London

Imperial College London is ranked in the global top ten universities. Our research is defined by its internationalism, impact and innovation. Two-thirds of Imperial research involves an international collaborator, spanning more than 130 countries, making us one of the UK’s most international universities.

The Research Excellence Framework rated Imperial as having the UK’s highest proportion of world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*) researchers, also securing the UK’s number one position for research impact. Our highly entrepreneurial culture, encompassing hundreds of spinouts and industrial partnerships, contributed to Reuters ranking Imperial as Europe’s second most innovative university.

The IRO team serves three core functions:

1. Global strategy development: identifying emerging opportunities for the College to develop international peer-to-peer academic and government partnerships that help address global challenges

We do this by undertaking horizon scanning and analysis of external opportunities, mapping this against our academics’ research and education priorities, and by seeking advice from relevant external contacts including embassies, funding agencies, UK government, and other academic institutions.

2. Programme delivery: coordinating and/or delivering specific international academic projects that enable the College to collaborate with and educate the global best

Examples include various research seed funds designed to facilitate new links, student mobility at undergraduate and postgraduate level with a range of international partners, and the Imperial Global Science Policy Forum, an events programme designed to connect senior international science, education and innovation advisers to Imperial researchers, industry experts, and other relevant stakeholders including parts of UK government.

3. Service and Stewardship: providing expert, evidence-led advice to the College community and providing relationship management services to inform effective decision-making on international matters

We undertake analysis of international opportunities, write briefings about current and future international partnerships, and provide details about funding or other mechanisms that may support international partnership. We convene country and regional academic advisory groups in order to review and discuss international opportunities. We are a ‘front door’ for the College’s international and academic partners, including foreign governments, international sections of UK government, scholarship agencies, funding bodies, universities and research institutions and convene incoming and outgoing international visits. We coordinate MoUs as well as supporting exchange agreements and letters of intent.
