Edgar Wood Academy is seeking outstanding and innovative Heads of Department to join our brand new 11-16 school serving the Middleton and Heywood communities of Rochdale. This is a rare opportunity to support the aspirational Assistant Headteachers and Headteacher to develop an outstanding educational provision dedicated to the progression of every child in our school.

About the role

We are seeking candidates with successful experience of leading Departments and who can demonstrate successful outcomes year on year in an 11-16 school setting. You will be passionate and enthusiastic about your subject area and creative about how you will encourage the love of learning in our students. Our new Heads of Department will be joining us at the start of our journey and with access to fantastic new facilities in our state of the art buildings.

This is a fantastic opportunity to use your skills in strategic planning, and to develop and implement initiatives to support the staff and students as the school grows. We are looking to appoint outstanding colleagues with qualified teacher status who are team players with experience of collaborative working. The chosen candidates will demonstrate how they will support the Assistant Heads in embedding a meaningful pastoral curriculum and sustain good or outstanding achievement and progress in a whole school environment. In keeping with the strong ethos of the school, there must be an understanding of the needs of all students, including SEND, to facilitate an inclusive school approach.

The Heads of Department will support the Assistant Headteachers in all aspects of delivery and will need a flexible and entrepreneurial approach to education. The school will be forming lasting relationships with families and carers, local community and stakeholders; therefore, the successful people will be a natural and a compelling communicator who is able to present confidently and professionally to a range of audiences.

About Altus Education Partnership

We at the Altus Education Partnership are incredibly excited to have been chosen by the Department for Education to open this new school which will serve the Middleton and Heywood communities.

Edgar Wood Academy will open in September 2021 with 120 year seven students in the grounds of Hopwood Hall College with subsequent year groups of up to 180. In 2022, the school will be moving into a modern, state-of-the-art building with stunning views of the local countryside but within easy access of several motorway links. Our multi-academy trust was formed in April 2017 by the governing body of Rochdale Sixth Form College and is dedicated to the improvement of education in the borough. The College is recognised nationally as a centre of excellence and is Ofsted outstanding. It is one of the highest performing colleges in the country according to the DfE’s performance tables and national achievement rate tables.

Opening a new school offers our staff a unique opportunity to shape and develop a curriculum which will capture students’ interests, provoke serious thinking and develop their intellectual curiosity.
