Are you an experienced senior media relations professional with a strong track record in developing and implementing high-profile media strategies and campaigns? NHS Charities Together are expanding their communications team by recruiting a new Head of Media.

  • Location: Home based with one day a week on average in Warwick office (Subject to Covid guidance)
  • Salary: £50,000 - £60,000

NHS Charities Together represent, champion and support the work of 241 member charities. These fantastic NHS Charities give over £1million everyday to the NHS enhancing patient experience and care. Following the high-profile success of the Covid-19 Urgent Appeal, raising over £150m and supporting 1.5m NHS staff since March 2020, we are now recruiting a brand-new Head of Media to develop, manage and deliver NHS Charities Together’s media strategy.

Overall Purpose

The new Head of Media will be joining NHS Charities Together at an exciting stage of growth and development, playing a vital role in building upon the widespread coverage achieved through national, regional and trade media over the past year.

This role will build relationships with key news outlets and journalists, as well as developing proactive media strategies to promote our brand and engage with supporters. This includes maximising awareness of appeals and campaigns, such as the NHS Big Tea.

Working closely with the Director of External Affairs and Communications, you will take a creative approach to maximising media opportunities, including the use of case studies, campaigns and polls and reports to maximise positive media coverage. Line managing a Media and Communications Officer, you will maximise PR and media opportunities across the organisation and our membership, ensuring that media is fully integrated, on brand and on message. You will also be responsible for crisis communications, reputation management and reactive media handling for the organisation.

The successful candidate will have significant experience in media/PR and is likely to have worked for a national charity, NHS or government body. You will have a track record in developing and implementing media strategies for high-profile organisations, as well as experience in reputation management and crisis communications. You will also have a creative approach to media relations and an ability to spot media opportunities that can advance organisational goals.

Key Responsibilities

Management and Leadership

  • Leading, overseeing and delivering the organisation’s media strategy to maximise brand reach and promote the aims of NHS Charities Together.
  • A creative approach to developing a forward plan of media opportunities, using case studies, campaigns, polls, reports and other tools to maximise proactive coverage.
  • Building relationships with national journalists and establishing NHS Charities Together as a source of positive health stories.
  • Maximising the PR potential of key campaigns including appeals and The NHS Big Tea, to help achieve campaign objectives.
  • Overseeing reactive media handling strategies to protect the reputation of the organisation and act as a spokesperson
  • Providing media training for spokespeople within the organisation
  • Providing media advice and tools to member charities to support them in maximising media coverage.
  • Maximising relationships with celebrities and other high-profile supporters to achieve positive coverage for the organisation.
  • Liaison with NHS England, DHSC and other bodies to build relationships and ensure alignment of our messages.
  • Responsible for leading and delivering an out of hours press office service, working with other members of the team.
  • Taking a ‘one team’ approach and working closely with colleagues and teams across the organisation to shared goals.
