Head of Mass Participation | NHS Charities Together

NHS Charities Together represents, champions and supports the work of 241 member charities. These fantastic NHS Charities give over £1m everyday to the NHS enhancing patient experience and care. The charity has raised over £150m and supported 1.5m NHS staff since March 2020. We are now recruiting a brand-new Head of Mass Participation to develop a portfolio of mass participation fundraising campaigns.

  • Location: Home based, with travel to our office in Warwick and / or hot desking with key stakeholders in London.
  • Salary: £50,000 - £63,000 plus 10% pension contributions, 28 days annual leave

Overall Purpose

The Head of Mass Participation is a pivotal new role within the Fundraising Directorate responsible for developing and delivering a successful portfolio of mass participation fundraising campaigns such as our flagship campaign, the NHS Big Tea.

Working alongside the Fundraising Director and forming part of the senior Fundraising Leadership Team within NHS Charities Together, this senior role will be accountable for leading the team to deliver and grow a multi-million-pound portfolio of national campaigns that can also be rolled out to our 241 member charities to enhance their own fundraising.

Coming from a background working in strategic leadership roles, the successful candidate will have experience of managing mass participation virtual events and creating new products. You will be an innovative thinker with the ability to review our existing supporter base, analyse the market environment and identify opportunities for supporter acquisition, engagement and retention.

Key Responsibilities

Management and Leadership

  • Work closely with key colleagues, stakeholders and members to execute the Fundraising strategy for the organisation.
  • Together with the Fundraising Senior Leadership Team, build and oversee the Fundraising department, ensuring effective working within the team and compliance with key processes.
  • Together with the Fundraising Director, lead, motivate and be responsible for the wellbeing of the team, in line with NHSCT’s values and behaviours.
  • Line manage a small but vital team of Fundraising Managers, Executives and Officers, taking full responsibility for their inductions, development and performance management.
  • Effectively lead and manage project meetings with internal and external stakeholders, coordinating the delivery of events and campaigns to achieve their objectives.
  • Protect the value of the NHS and NHSCT brand in all fundraising activities, working within the agreement of our trademark licence.
  • Work across directorates such as External Affairs & Communications and Membership & Impact to ensure cohesiveness and collective success of projects and organisational objectives.
  • Represent the charity internally and externally, particularly with key stakeholders.
  • Scan the external environment for opportunities and innovations in fundraising that could assist NHSCT with generating the sustainable income we require to meet our charitable objectives.

 

Strategy Development and Income Generation

  • To be responsible for the development, implementation and management of the overarching strategy for fundraising events and campaigns at NHS Charities Together.
  • To develop a portfolio of products which build brand awareness and inspire our supporters to take multiple actions and increase their engagement with the charity.
  • Create a series of events and campaigns to leverage fundraising for our NHS Charity members.
  • To lead on the planning, management and execution of national events and campaigns – developing integrated and multi-channel marketing plans that inspire support from both warm and cold audiences.
  • To lead the development of business cases for investment in new fundraising opportunities. Work with the Corporate Partnerships Team to develop sponsorship opportunities, in order to secure investment over an extended period.
  • Collaborate with the communications and marketing team to strategically maximise the promotion of events and supporting sponsorship.
  • Manage relationships with external agencies to test new channels and deliver activity – ensuring that services are delivered on budget and on time, as well as ensuring we have up to date contracts.

 

  Performance Management

  • To drive a high-performance culture that embraces insight, testing, evaluating and improvement.
  • To be accountable for developing and delivering against cross-departmental KPIs and budgets relating to income, expenditure, ROI and recruitment; monitoring performance across the department and providing effective support and management where required.
  • To support and collaborate with colleagues across the Fundraising Leadership Team to maximise opportunities and performance.
  • To maintain an excellent understanding of the external Fundraising environment. Horizon scanning and exploring new marketing opportunities whilst conscious of the charity landscape, trends and up and coming techniques/technologies.
