Lead developments in governance, policy and reporting and a new team to support key corporate services. The Head of Governance & Corporate Affairs will embed new structures and support staff roles to ensure a close alignment across leadership and governance.

About the role

The Board of Barnet and Southgate College has undergone significant change over the past 12 months, with Adam Goldstein having been appointed as Chair in May 2020 along with other new Governors. Further change is anticipated as several Governors look to retire from their positions having fulfilled their terms of office by the end of the 2021 summer term.

This is a significant opportunity for an experienced governance and/or policy professional to oversee the success of governance within the College as new Governors and improvements to existing arrangements bed down. You will also support the Chair to ensure the Board continues to remain reflective of the diverse communities served by the College and benefits from relevant and strategic talent.

The Head of Governance & Corporate Affairs is a newly established leadership role and reports to the CEO on a day-to-day basis, but formally to the Chair. The person appointed will take ownership of core services relating to policy scheduling, data protection, complaints and support for the Executive Office and Senior Leadership Team. Through managing a small team, the post-holder will lead improvements to ensure smoother integration and alignment between the decision making and action by the College’s leadership and Board.

Acting as the lead Clerk to the Board, you will service the main board and provide counsel to the Chair, Governors and CEO – delivering a full and comprehensive secretariat support package and advising on constitutional matters, duties and powers within the current legislative framework. Supported by your team, you will develop their skills to become multi-faceted; providing office and administration support for the Executive Leadership Team and Chair, whilst supporting leadership team and committee meetings to enhance the flow-through and tracking of decision making, action and policy updates.

Who we are looking for

Barnet & Southgate College is seeking a successful governance or policy professional with substantial experience as Clerk to the Board and/or Company Secretary, ideally gained from within the education, public or charity sectors. You will be comfortable with appraising management information and reports to lead the quality review of information before it reaches the Board and its committees.

Your style will be approachable and collegiate, though we also require you to influence through diplomacy and tact. You will be working with a range of stakeholders, from the CEO and their Executive Leadership Team through to college managers and volunteer Governors, and so we need you to be comfortable working at this level. Your skills in organisation should be exceptional and you should be able to demonstrate prior experience of team leadership, or a desire to progress in this area to develop a high-performing Executive Office and Corporate Governance team.

Whilst we would ideally like candidates to have experience of supporting a further education governing body, what is more important to us is your ability to quickly grasp the legislative requirements expected of our governing body, and your desire to work in a forward-thinking education provider which enhances the life chances of thousands of people each year.
