Who we are

The International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) is the global membership organisation for Freudian analysts. We are an English registered Charity with a US subsidiary incorporated in Delaware U.S.A. Our headquarters are in London at our purpose-designed, water-front offices at the Lexicon on City Road.

We have c.11,500 members and 5,700 analysts in training. One of our primary objectives is to develop practices and services, with an international focus which strengthen the sense of belonging to an association that adds value to members’ professional lives.

We organise a biennial Congress for scientific exchange, deliver monthly webinars and podcasts, provide research grants, and also offer opportunities to publish books.

IPA membership is valued as a globally recognised “kitemark” of high-quality training and a sound ethical basis for analytic practice and treatment. Training is offered via our component societies (in 51 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Africa) which also oversee competence to practice.

IPA’s new international groups’ process extends the reach of psychoanalysis around the world through the accreditation of new societies.

Beyond the clinical consulting rooms, IPA members are active in applying psychoanalytic practices and concepts to such intractable problems as conflict, racism, and the trauma of man-made as well as natural disasters.

We are committed to the promotion of psychoanalysis as not just a treatment but a useful way to consider and work through small group, organisational, national and international dilemmas.

Our podcast IPA off the Couch promotes the many ways in which IPA functions in the community and the world.

About the role

The role of Head of Finance is a pivotal position requiring adept financial leadership combined with a strong customer service ethos.

This role is responsible for overseeing strategic financial planning and ensuring efficient financial management in alignment with legal requirements and organisational objectives.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Head of Finance acts as the primary financial advisor to the senior management team, Treasurer, and Board of Representatives, offering expertise on financial matters and contributing to decision-making processes.

Key responsibilities include implementing an effective budgeting process, maintaining financial controls, managing income generation, overseeing governance compliance, and maintaining key relationships with stakeholders.

This role significantly impacts the IPA’s financial stability and operational effectiveness, ensuring prudent financial practices that support the organisation’s mission and global initiatives in psychoanalysis.

Who we are looking for

The ideal candidate for the Head of Finance position at the IPA will possess a blend of qualities, skills, and experiences crucial for effective leadership in this role.

You should be able to demonstrate a strong customer service ethos, coupled with a proactive attitude towards problem-solving and a genuine commitment to putting members’ interests at the forefront.

You will be working with a diverse range of stakeholders across an international landscape, so it is essential that you are able to inspire confidence and exercise strong judgement in dealing with sensitive and confidential issues. An ability to navigate diverse cultural nuances is essential for this role and an understanding of economics across diverse regions would be a distinct advantage.

You will be well organised and confident in working both independently and as part of a wider team with a diplomatic and resilient character. You will be willing to travel internationally, and be flexible in working early or late, and over weekends due to the international nature of the IPA’s operations and key personnel working in varying time zones.

The Head of Finance plays a key role in a number of international board, budget and finance meetings which are held in a mixture of online and face-to-face environments and is required to be on standby for all board meetings.

You should exhibit exemplary financial acumen, with a track record of strategic financial planning and budget management, ideally within international charity and membership organisations. A solid grasp of international finance, including budgeting in multiple currencies, is paramount, alongside adeptness in navigating tax regulations across various jurisdictions.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience in overseeing payroll, audit, reporting, and banking relationships. Familiarity with Xero accounting systems is highly desirable.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are crucial for effectively interfacing with key stakeholders, including the Treasurer, President, Vice President, and Board Members, while a nurturing leadership style that balances assertiveness with empathy will support a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Expert knowledge of psychoanalysis is not essential, but having an interest in the field would be advantageous as it would facilitate a deeper understanding of the organisation’s mission and values.

Welcome from the Executive Director

Dear candidate,

The IPA is an extraordinary organisation. Although relatively small, it operates on a truly global basis working with a profession that is full of highly intelligent and hugely creative thinkers.

The management challenges are enormous. My current workload includes managing an ethics case in China, reviewing our organisational relationship with the American Psychoanalytic Association, and developing new rules on training reference standards that will work across all the territories in which we operate. But while the range of issues we deal with is immense, the staff we have to manage them is modest.

Having successfully innovated to navigate the pandemic and the global dislocation to finances, we have now entered a new phase of change and development with online opportunities and a return to face-to-face working creating competing demands for our focus and our resources.

We are seeking a new Head of Finance to join our senior management who will be sufficiently flexible to cope with the sheer range of challenges we regularly face, be creative enough to continuously think of innovative solutions, and have very high levels of emotional intelligence necessary to work with our psychoanalysts — while also having sufficient resilience to work with a large Trustee Board drawn from all parts of the globe.

Reporting directly to me, you will take ownership of our entire finance function. This is a hands-on role, responsible for accounting, reporting, analysis of financial results, forecasting and financial risk management, and much more.

You will work closely with our Deputy Executive Director and me as part of a three-person senior management team and act as the “go to” Financial expert for our Treasurer.

Although London-based, this is a truly global role which will have you ensure compliance with charity regulators, tax offices and banking relationships in the UK and the US.

There will also be the opportunity to act as our internal IT consultant and manage relationships with key IT partners, although this is optional.

You will be a qualified accountant who can flex between the details and a longer-term financial perspective.

Exceptional communication skills are essential and experience working with different cultures and languages would be ideal.

The IPA’s main working language is English, but we also work in Spanish, French, German and Portuguese.

This role is not for the faint-hearted but for the right person, this will be hugely challenging and immensely rewarding, and I can’t think of many organisations that can offer the sheer variety of experiences you will have here.

I very much hope that you want to join us.

I look forward to receiving your application.

Kind regards,

Paul Crake
Executive Director
