Schools are shifting to online learning at an unprecedented speed and, with disparities across the country, there is a real risk that children with speech, language and communication needs in disadvantaged areas of the UK will be left behind. Our new three-year plan will address this, and we are seeking a Head of Marketing, Brand and Digital to support us to achieve this, promoting and advocating our cause among our key target audiences.
Reports to: Director of Corporate Services
Line reports: Team of two, potential to grow to three
Within this newly created role, we are looking for a senior marketing professional to create a new strategic marketing function to lead and manage the I CAN brand and associated marketing strategies. We are seeking someone to manage and grow the current marketing, brand and digital team, and to lead upon the development and delivery of an audience focused and integrated marketing plan.
Working closely with the Head of Communications and Public Affairs, you will ensure that all marketing and communications are fully integrated, as well as provide marketing support and advice to teams across the charity, ensuring that our brand guidelines are upheld. The team will be leading on the development of our digital marketing offering and strive to increase awareness of the I CAN brand across the UK.
We are seeking a highly experienced senior marketing professional, with skills across the marketing mix, especially digital marketing and brand. You will need to have a strong track record in the development and delivery of integrated marketing strategies and plans, as well as line management experience and a strong stakeholder engagement ability.
Your experience of working within the not-for-profit sector is desirable but not essential, what is more important is that you can bring the marketing, brand and digital skillset and knowledge that is needed for this role.

Thank you for your interest in joining our organisation and sharing our mission to ensure no child is left out or left behind because of a difficulty speaking or understanding.
As the leading children’s communication charity in the UK, we strive to continuously improve the services we offer to children, young people and their families, as well as professionals who work with children. However, as we spell out in our Three-Year Plan, we know we need to do more for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). That is why we are looking for people with the right passion, skills and ambition to help us achieve this.
To recognise the focus needed in the new 2021/22 financial year, we have created a new head of marketing, brand and digital role to create a central marketing team in the organisation, working closely with our directors, front-line teams, our income generating teams and our communications and public affairs team. We also have two trustees, each with marketing and digital expertise who can provide guidance, insights and board perspectives.
We are looking at our market propositions, our brand, our digital strategy and our channels to market, so you would be joining at an exciting time. You will bring a mixture of strategic insight and tactical delivery with a team of two, potentially three, to lead and manage.
We welcome candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds to help to raise our profile as the most influential children’s communication charity in the UK.
A career with us requires a commitment to our values: to be Impactful, Collaborative, Aspirational, and ensure No voice is unheard (I CAN). In return, we offer a rewarding workplace with opportunities to learn and grow and a great and committed group of people to work alongside.
Director of Corporate Services
Three-Year Plan: https://ican.org.uk/about-us/together-we-can-do-more/
I CAN is the leading children’s communication charity in the UK, founded in 1888. Children and young people’s communication needs are at the heart of everything we do.
Our vision is a world where all children have the communication skills they need to fulfil their potential.
Our mission is to make sure that no child is left out or left behind because of difficulties speaking or understanding.
Communication is a fundamental life skill, yet over 1.4 million children and young people in the UK have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
Some children have delayed language, meaning they don’t meet the developmental milestones for their age. In some disadvantaged areas of the UK, delayed language can affect up to 50% of children.
Others have long-term difficulties with understanding and communicating. This can be associated with another condition such as autism, learning difficulties or hearing loss, or an isolated condition called Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
Without adequate support, having SLCN affects children’s educational outcomes, ability to form relationships, health, wellbeing and independence.
Too many children and young people with SLCN remain unidentified and unsupported; a disproportionate number go on to suffer mental health issues, experience the justice system, or struggle to find work as adults.
