Chief Executive Officer | GS1 UK

GS1 UK is looking for a new CEO. Are you the right person to lead a bold and ambitious membership organisation?

  • Location: City of London, EC2N 4AW
  • Salary: Highly competitive six figure salary, depending on experience, plus generous bonus and benefits scheme

About the role

Online, in store and on the ward, we help organisations to uniquely identify, describe and track anything. We bring together our 40,000 strong UK membership to solve industry problems.

Our work in healthcare saves lives every day. In retail we create quality data to deliver efficiency and build trust. Our services underpin online marketplaces; enable businesses to sell online; and empower small businesses to trade throughout the UK and internationally.

From product barcodes to patient wristbands, GS1 standards transform the way we work and live.

We are one of 114 independent GS1 organisations using a global language that is used in 150 countries worldwide.

Who we're looking for

We are growing. In influence, membership and service innovation. So, we’re looking for a commercially savvy CEO who will balance risk with innovative product development.

As CEO you’ll get to work in a collaborative, collegiate and forward-thinking organisation. Alongside people who love working in a mission-led workplace, where values are key and the culture is strong.

We’ll need you to be thoughtful, strategic and confident in order to represent GS1 UK on the global stage. You’ll be comfortable bringing industry together, from NHS to large retailers through to small online start-ups. Our diverse stakeholders are what make us different and you’ll need to understand their challenges in order to lead the team who will collaborate to solve them.

The only constant is change and we’re looking for someone who can horizon scan and understand the unique opportunities available in our evolving world.

You’ll be a proven leader with international experience and a background in one of our core sectors. One of your first jobs will be to develop and then deliver our next strategic plan.

We’re an exciting organisation, clear about our mission and we’re looking for that unique person who will wow us.

Is that you?

Dear applicant,

I am delighted that you are interested in the role of CEO of GS1 UK.

In GS1 UK, we are central to bringing the physical and digital worlds together, whether it be across the retail value chain or the patient journey in healthcare, you will have been touched by what we do every day. When you scan and pay for a product in store; purchased an item online from one of the major marketplaces; or are provided with a barcoded wristband in hospital; it wouldn’t be possible without our standards.

Increasingly we are becoming central to providing solutions to address the key societal issues of our time: sustainability, traceability and recycling. The power of our standards truly transform the way we work and live.

Personally, I have had the privilege of being the Chair of GS1 UK for just over a year. I have previously been involved in the past as a Board Director and as Vice Chairman over many years.

Gary Lynch, our current CEO, is retiring, as planned, at the end of 2020 after overseeing sustained growth for more than 15 years. We have a strong Executive Team, supported by a diverse, knowledgeable and committed Board, selected to represent our key sectors. In the Global organisation of GS1, there are peers and counterparts who look to the UK to contribute towards the worldwide delivery of our global mission.

We now have the opportunity for a new CEO to take this great organisation forward into the next decade. I thank you for your interest and look forward to receiving your application.

Best wishes

Chris Tyas
Chair, GS1 UK

About GS1 UK

Online, in store and on the ward, we help organisations to uniquely identify, describe and track anything. Increasing trust in data for everyone.

As a part of a neutral, global organisation, we bring our members together to address industry problems that organisations can’t solve alone. To our members, we are their trusted advisers.

There are 114 neutral and independent GS1 organisations operating worldwide and GS1 standards provide a global language for business that is used in 150 countries.

On a daily basis, we actively help more than two million organisations across 20 business sectors to identify everything from physical products and places to surgeons in operating theatres.

In short, we exist to solve industry problems. From product barcodes to patient wristbands, GS1 standards transform the way we work and live.

The need for trust, transparency, efficiency and sustainability drive what we do

Everything we do is built on our standards that uniquely identify, capture and share information, in a common format and are shareable by all.

We bring the physical and the digital worlds together. We link the product and its digital twin, whether that be in commerce or healthcare. That’s more important than ever today and will be still more important in the future

We do this through:

  • Unique identification:
Enabling organisations to identify everything including products, places, people and assets.
  • Data capture:
GS1 barcodes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags can be used to identify products, locations and serial numbers.
  • Data sharing:
GS1 standards are inter-operable, global and royalty free allowing for data to be verified and shared throughout the value chain without human intervention.

Our areas of focus

GS1 standards play a vital role across more than 20 industries worldwide. In the UK we focus on:

  • Healthcare
We help the NHS save thousands of lives and millions of pounds by uniquely identifying every person, product and place – helping to enhance patient safety, reduce unwarranted clinical variation and improve operational efficiencies.
  • Retail
We help create quality data to improve efficiency, build trust and deliver a better customer experience, online and instore.
  • Online Marketplaces
Using GS1 standards, we help businesses to sell online and help shoppers find, compare and buy products more easily.
  • Small business
Our standards empower Britain’s community of small businesses to grow, making it easier to trade throughout the UK and expand internationally.

How we are funded

We’re a neutral, not-for-profit organisation funded through our 40,000+ membership and the services we offer.

As we have no dividends to pay, any surplus we make is re-invested to increase the value we provide to our members.

Our members are at the heart of what we do

Our UK board is comprised of high street names, online giants, healthcare change makers and some interesting brands you may not have heard of.

They hold us to account and ensure we are innovating in areas that are pivotal to their businesses, the wider industry and society as a whole. And, because what we do is recognised by our stakeholders as ‘pre-competitive’, organisations that usually compete are able to work together with GS1 to develop the standards and services for the benefit of the whole industry.

The Global Language of Healthcare

We solve industry challenges through trusted data

Our goal is to provide industry with a global source of unique, authentic and trusted data created by GS1 members around the world.

Our values

We have three core values:

  • Take pride in what you do;
  • Be trusted advisors;
  • Wow through service!
