Group Director of Information Technology London & South East Education Group

The London & South East Education Group is looking for an ambitious new Group Director of Information Technology to work across the group, including the Multi-Academy Trust and four college sites. About the role:

London & South East Education Group was formed in 2018, encompassing our College (with its eight campuses), multi-academy trust (with its seven schools) and two apprenticeship companies.

This new over-arching organisation reflects our growth since the merger and position as the leading educational provider in south east London.

From the Alternative and Special provision offered by our outstanding schools to vocational courses of all levels – right through to degrees and professional qualifications, we make education accessible to everyone across the region, whatever their age, ability or interest.

Led by CEO Sam Parrett, London & South East Education Group provides a strong and united brand that encapsulates all the work being undertaken in each part of the organisation. It also gives us the scope to expand our activities across London and the South East going forward.

This role reports to the Group Chief Technology and Information Officer and entails managing a team responsible for IT across the Group which consists of London South East College and Multi Academy Trust.

This is an exciting and dynamic role that needs to have reach and impact across our multifaceted business. It includes working with curriculum colleagues and providing an IT perspective on the shape and delivery of the future curriculum offer, including ways of teaching both onsite, digitally and online. It also means working across our business to harness new technologies and ways of working to help simplify and streamline, while building and maintaining the infrastructure to make all this happen.

Who we need:

As the use and reach of technologies within the education sector change and develop we are looking for a proactive, inspirational and visionary Group Director of IT to join our team and help shape that vision of the future across our Schools and Colleges, having a strong voice and input into our collective vision for LSECG.

You will be responsible for all aspects of the strategic and operational management of the IT infrastructure, digital estate and cyber security. Leading a team of circa 20 staff across the Group you will work with internal stakeholders to develop and implement our digital vision and drive change and improvement through our business, keeping our infrastructure and digital assets secure and complaint and being proactive in ensuring a high-quality experience for all users.

You will need to maintain strong project management and interpersonal skills, working closely with key stakeholders across the group to develop and maintain excellent working relationships within the business in order to support and meet the needs of the organisation with the introduction of new services and technologies.

You will have experience of working and leading teams in similarly sized and complex environments and be comfortable in reviewing information and putting forward plans and strategies that compliment and support the organisation’s strategic ambitions.  Equally, we need you to bring your experience in leading projects, being responsible for budgets, and operationally supporting line managers to ensure plans are delivered efficiently, on time and within budget.

The London & South East Education Group (LSEEG) has been established to optimise collaboration and integration between the further and higher education activities of London South East Colleges (LSEC) and the school education activities of London South East Academies Trust (LSEAT).

London South East Colleges (LSEC) (the College) is a multi-campus educational institution, formed from the merger in August 2016 of Bromley College of Further & Higher Education, Greenwich Community College and Bexley College.  The College is dedicated to a core role in ensuring that learners in its sub-region of South East London and surrounding areas have access to high-quality, integrated education and training, at all levels and across the maximum range of subjects.

London South East Academies Trust (LSEAT) (the Trust) is a Multi-Academy Trust, sponsored by LSEC. The Trust currently comprises 8 schools encompassing primary, specialist, and alternative provision. The Trust aims to provide outstanding education and training for young people, from primary to secondary age, across the region, bringing together specialist provision to provide a real alternative to mainstream education.

The College and the Trust (“the Group Organisations”) are closely associated organisations, with complementary public benefit objects and a common mission, comprising a charitable, corporate group. (“the Group”).

Awards and achievements: London South East Colleges

London South East Colleges has eight campuses across the region offering education and training to around 13,000 students and an annual turnover of c£45m.  Since the merger in 2016, the College has been working hard to strengthen the provision and safeguard itself financially for the future. In this regard it has secured c£40m in capital funding through the GLA and Mayor of London to redevelop our Greenwich Campus, aligned to the Future Greenwich Digital and Creative local authority strategy.

The College also secured the Mayor of London’s Construction Academy Scheme Quality Mark, Hub Status and capital funding. It is the only College in London to achieve this. The College was judged by Ofsted as Good with Outstanding features in March 2019 – its first inspection as a merged institution – with achievement rates improving year on year and above national rates. In February 2022, we were chosen to lead the Local London Green and Digital Mayoral Academy as part of the Mayor of London’s Academies Programme.

The College has been recognised by the Chartered Institution of Further Education and was awarded FE Charter Status in 2018.  Our Higher Education provision gained the TEF Silver Award and highest rating of ‘Confidence’ by QAA in 2018 and our SEND provision was recognised as a DfE pathfinder centre and Ofsted Outstanding with 92% progression rate into training and employment.

In November 2019 the College was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, a prestigious prize and the highest national honour that can be awarded within our sector, celebrating excellence within Further and Higher Education. Since 1907, the College has been providing high quality technical and vocational education for its local communities, so this award celebrates more than a century of educational tradition across our merged college in Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich. In particular, our nomination highlighted the strategic engagement programme we have pioneered to help support housing ambitions across Greater London, aptly named ‘the construction skills generator’ in partnership with many employers, local authorities and other stakeholders.

In February 2021 the Group was presented with the Social Value Public Sector Leadership Award in recognition of the work it is doing to support its communities. The national awards aim to highlight best practice from around the country, showcasing how businesses are embedding social value and helping to tackle the social challenges within their communities. The Group came top in the Public Leadership category for its pioneering work to embed social value in its business culture, processes and systems. This has included a range of initiatives from community-focused work experience opportunities, local procurement strategies and social-value related performance targets for staff.

In May 2021 the College received national recognition at the prestigious TES FE Awards to win three accolades including Overall FE Provider of the Year, Contribution to the Local Community, and FE College of the Year.

In June the College launched the Good for Me Good for FE community action initiative, alongside East Coast College and Loughborough to lead the sector’s drive to collectively generate £1m of social value over the next year. The campaign hopes to create a sustainable programme of community action across the UK, while helping to support wellbeing of FE staff, given the scientifically proven benefits that volunteering and supporting social causes has on mental health. By the beginning of the 2021/22 academic year, circa 120 colleges had signed up to the initiative.

Awards and achievements: London South East Academies Trust

London South East Academies Trust is a growing and thriving multi-academy trust consisting of mainstream, specialist and alternative provision.

The Trust is responsible for eight operating academies, with an annual turnover of c£26m. All academies inspected since joining the Trust have been judged “Good” and have improved from their previous category. Those which are yet to be inspected, with the exception of Bramley Oak Academy (which converted in September 2020), are judged Good to Outstanding and there is confidence in the Trust’s position and capacity for further growth, across London and the South East.

London South East Academies Trust prides itself on being a local MAT with ambitions to grow to a medium-sized organisation. The Trust is a community-based organisation that has an in-depth understanding of the local context and establishes strong connections with stakeholders and local authority partners, ensuring that children have access to high-quality alternative, specialist and mainstream provision.
