About the role

The Telford College Corporation is the college’s governing body with responsibility for ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding senior managers to account for the college’s performance and overseeing the financial management of the college.

The Corporation meets approximately nine times per year – in 2019/20 there will be eight meetings plus a strategic discussion session – and comprises 15 members (10 independent governors, two staff governors, two student governors and the Principal & CEO).

Who we're looking for

Telford College is seeking to complete its collective skill-set as a governing body with an injection of new talent. They are looking for people who like a challenge and most importantly are passionate about delivering positive outcomes for both the people and businesses of the local area.

Candidates are sought with experience of leadership in the following areas:

  • Finance and/or audit (two governor positions)
  • Curriculum and quality (one governor position)

Dear Candidate,

It has been 18 months since we became Telford College and a lot of exciting changes have taken place since our successful merger in December 2017.

The biggest change was the relocation of our sixth form provision to our Seventh Form Centre on our Haybridge Road campus. In September 2018, we welcomed our first intake of students to our improved Telford College campus and, nine months on, we’re going from strength-to-strength. We’ve overseen three-year improvement trends for achievement, the launch of our new Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality suite, good relationships with local employers and the development of partnerships with the Football Association, RAF Cosford and local secondary schools.

Two years ago, however, was a very different picture. The college was in intervention with the FE Commissioner and graded as inadequate by Ofsted. The merger process with the local sixth form college was underway and we were undergoing the very challenging process of submitting a Restructuring Fund bid to the Transaction Unit. Fast forward to now and the college has merged and operates on a single campus. It is out of intervention; has received several visits from Ofsted who have noted the significant progress made (we are awaiting our first inspection as the newly merged college); and was awarded its funding bid. We are producing positive results. Improving quality of provision and ensuring financial sustainability remain key areas of focus for everyone at the college. We are obviously proud of the achievements to date but there is still more to do and the governing body plays an important role in this.

We have three vacancies for independent governors on the Telford College Corporation. We are looking for individuals who will provide the support and challenge needed to deliver further improvement across all areas of the college. In particular, we are looking to recruit:

  • A governor with financial expertise/qualifications to act as a link governor for finance;
  • A governor with recent financial expertise and an accountancy qualification to act as Chair of the Corporation’s Audit Committee;
  • A governor with expertise in teaching, learning and assessment in FE and/or HE.

If appointed, we will invest in you – successful candidates are supported through an induction process, there is ongoing training/development and also opportunity to be mentored by another governor.

Telford College of Arts & Technology (TCAT) officially merged with New College Telford to form Telford College on 20 December 2017.

The merger of the two colleges was fundamentally concerned with reshaping and repurposing the further education and skills offer in Telford to achieve closer alignment to the economic and employment needs of the M54 corridor whilst ensuring local needs were fully met.

This is an exciting time for further education and with the new waves of investment currently coming into our region; it is vital to work together to help create a workforce with strong academic, vocational and employability skills.

The progress made by the college since the merger has been recognised by Ofsted through their monitoring visits in April 2018 and January 2019 – and they are producing positive results. Improving quality and financial sustainability remain key areas of focus for everyone at the college.
