About the role

South Essex College is looking to engage qualified individuals to join the Corporation Board who have substantial executive-level experience in commercial finance and further education curriculum development and can both support and challenge senior managers to ensure the College realises their ambition of maintaining its presence in the sector.

The Corporation Board is the College’s governing body with responsibility for ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding senior managers to account for the College’s performance and overseeing the financial management. The Corporation Board sits termly and is supported by committees and are ultimately responsible for setting the strategy and monitoring performance and standards, along with ensuring the effective and efficient use of resources, the College’s solvency and the safeguarding of its assets.

South Essex College is seeking to complete its collective skill-set as a governing body with an injection of new talent. They are looking for people who like a challenge and most importantly are passionate about delivering positive outcomes for both the people and businesses of the local area.

South Essex College was formed in 2010 by the merger of South East Essex College and Thurrock and Basildon College. We are a large College with several campuses running along the Thames. We have recently added Prospect College of Advanced Technology, specialists in construction and engineering training, to our organisation.

We have a well-established Governing Board at the College, with a number of committed Governors who give up a significant amount of time to support and challenge the Senior Managers in making the strategic decisions and setting the strategic direction of the College.

This is an exciting, dynamic and very interesting role. The College is a key provider of education and training across South Essex and provides opportunities and an excellent service to a very wide range of learners. The College provides programmes for all age groups and for students studying at entry levels right through to degree programmes.

It is a key strategic player in the area and has a significant impact on thousands of young people and adults across South Essex. This role will provide the opportunity to influence, support and help direct a large part of the education provision in South Essex.

South Essex College is the largest technical and vocational education and training provider in Essex. With campuses in Southend-on-Sea, Basildon and Thurrock, we cater for over 12,000 students and employ 1,000 staff. We are a key provider of skills development at all levels, for a vibrant, ambitious region. From age 14 upwards, we have courses delivered by industry-trained, professional tutors that suit everyone.

History of South Essex College

The College was founded in 1899 as an art school and was renamed later as the Junior Day Technical School. It was then restructured to include commercial and industrial provision such as plumbing. The College became South East Essex College of Arts and Technology (SEECAT) in 1991.

In 2004, the College relocated to the campus in the centre of Southend and on 1st January 2010, the College formally merged with Basildon and Thurrock College and was renamed South Essex College of Further and Higher Education. In 2013, The Forum Southend-on-Sea opened which has an area dedicated to South Essex on the third floor, where our HE provision is based. In 2014, our Thurrock campus relocated to a new building in the centre of Grays – provision based here includes a specialist workshop and studio spaces linked to courses for construction, engineering, media and creative arts, in addition to facilities for logistics, childcare, health & social care and IT courses. The campus’ hairdressing and beauty therapy salons are open to the public and include a working spa complete with flotation tank.

The campus comprises two buildings: the West Building and the East Building. An outdoor seating area links the two buildings and there is a pleasant green area to the south. There is also an outdoor amphitheatre to showcase the College’s acting and musical talent.

In 2019, the College opened a new campus in Stephenson Road, Southend, which specialises in engineering and construction and finally, in February 2019 the College merged with PROCAT, a specialist engineering and construction provider based in Basildon, Canvey Island and Ilford.

PROCAT was established in 1969 by a group of local engineering employers who wanted a training facility to provide the first year-off-the-job training for their craft and technician apprentices. The Engineering Industry Training Board (EITB) provided funding to build an engineering training centre and then invited the employers to appoint the Board of Trustees/Directors to run the centre. In total over 150 were set up across England and they were called Group Training Associations or GTAs. Today there are fewer than 40 GTAs of which PROCAT was the second largest.

In 2014, Prospects College of Advanced Technology became the first new college to be incorporated in 22 years.

PROCAT today and for the future

PROCAT no longer exists in its own right but now forms part of the specialist engineering and construction area of the college. This offer has been established  to meet the workforce development needs of businesses which operate in sectors that are critical to the UK economy.

This includes advanced apprenticeships to secure a pipeline of new talent, higher and degree apprenticeships to support advanced engineering capability and bespoke training solutions to develop the expertise and skills of the existing workforce. We follow the STEM model, leading the way in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

With the merger of PROCAT now successfully complete and our new Digital Technology site well under development and on target to open in September 2020, we are now in a further merger consultation with the National College for Creative Industries which upon successful completion will strengthen our offer and reach across the region.
