Outstanding in every area, Newcastle & Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) are looking for three new Governors with expertise in the areas of education, audit and finance to support their continued success.

Who we are

Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) is Staffordshire’s leading General Further Education College, with pass rates and student achievement rates amongst the very best in the country.

We provide a wide range of academic, vocational and apprenticeship qualifications from entry to degree level, along with support services to help our students achieve their goals.

The College has grown significantly over the past 10 years. It is currently home to 10,000 students studying full-time, part-time, higher education and apprenticeship programmes with us from Newcastle under Lyme, Stoke on Trent, Stafford and surrounding areas.

In 2019, NSCG became the first further education provider in England to achieve the top grades in every area of Ofsted’s reformed Education Inspection Framework (EIF).

Overall, NSCG is rated as ‘Outstanding’. The related inspection report praises all areas of our provision and acknowledges our ‘positive, stimulating and safe learning environment’, ‘highly motivated staff’, and ‘learners’ exemplary behaviour and attitudes to learning’.

About the roles

The Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group Corporation is the College’s governing body and currently comprises of 16 members. Our board members provide representation from local businesses, local councils and community groups as well from our staff team and our student body.

Through their role on our Corporation Board, our members represent the particular interests of the local community and public interest in general. They oversee the way the College is run, ensuring it meets the needs of the local community, school leavers and employers.

It ensures the highest professional and ethical standards, as well as the effective use of resources. Governors are responsible for the financial solvency of the institution, for the proper use of public funds, for sound management and for the quality of education, training and business service provided. Perhaps even more importantly, our Governors set the tone of our organisation, shape our culture and help define the values through which we work.

Being a Governor in the FE sector is like no other voluntary role and at NSCG, you will become a member of the Board, led by Simon Leech, the Chair of the Corporation, and work together to oversee the strategic direction of the College.

Governors, whether in a formal meeting or in situations where they are representing the College as an ambassador, must ensure they give sufficient time to their duties and undertake the role with rigour, acting as a critical friend to the Principal & Chief Executive, Craig Hodgson, and his senior management team.

There is an important distinction to be drawn between these responsibilities and that of the day-to-day management of the College.

The Corporation Board establishes and maintains the framework within which the organisation functions, holding the Principal & Chief Executive and other senior managers accountable for the effective management of the College and the execution of our strategy.

Each and every member of our Board is an expert in their field. Despite each coming from a broad range of professional backgrounds, the golden thread running through the membership is an unwavering commitment to support our senior managers in achieving our organisational mission and a dedication to our students and local communities.

Some of our board members have provided us with many years of service and as such, their respective terms of office are due to come to an end in the months ahead.

As such, we now seek to identify and appoint their successors who we hope will be able to help guide our College with the same degree of distinction.

Who we are looking for

We are looking to appoint three new Governors to our Corporation. These will be people who have a passion for further education and skills development in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford and the surrounding areas.

Successful candidates will be those who can offer their commitment to supporting the College’s ambition to build on our successes and to drive forward our aspirations to be an even more effective and impactful organisaiton.

These roles offer a fantastic opportunity to join an ambitious and committed Corporation and become a member of one of the College’s committees, allowing you to genuinely have an impact on the success of our College, the achievements of our students and the future prosperity of our local communities.

It is an exciting time to join the Corporation Board of NSCG, with a forward-looking strategy ensuring the College continues to make a demonstrable and positive contribution to the region we serve.

This passion and commitment should be underpinned by a track record of significant expertise and impactful leadership that would be relevant in relation to the following committees.

Education & Standards Committee

Firstly, we seek to appoint a strategic leader with experience in curriculum development, quality improvement and assurance. This experience will preferably have been gained through professional roles held within the further education sector — allowing you to offer appropriate advice and scrutiny to our curriculum leaders.

We would also be interested in receiving applications from education leaders based within awarding organisations, independent training providers or relevant sector bodies — as we believe such candidates may offer us the opportunity to diversify the educational experience across our board.

The successful candidate will be appointed to our full Board and our Education & Standards Committee, on which there are currently eight other members.

Finance & General Purposes Committee

We then seek to appoint a new member who is primarily an experienced and qualified finance professional. Whilst candidates may have professional experience as a senior financial leader, they may also have experience working in more board operational roles which encompass responsibilities linked to estates and resource functions.

The successful candidate will be appointed to our full Board as well as our Finance & General Purposes Committee, on which there are currently six other members.

Audit Committee

Finally, we seek to appoint a new member to our Board who will also be on our Audit Committee. This committee is currently comprised of four members.

Where appropriate experience is identified, there may be the opportunity for the successful candidate to be appointed as the Vice Chair of the Audit Committee.

For this role, candidates may have professional experience gained in a range of areas. They will be qualified finance professionals with expertise in scrutinising complex data sets or an experienced auditor.

We will also be welcoming applications from those with expertise in the areas of risk management and compliance.

Expectations and Commitment

Successful candidates will be appointed on the basis of a four-year term of office.

Whilst previous governance experience is not essential, candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the principles of good governance and how these should be implemented to discharge fiduciary responsibilities in the context of a Non-Executive Board.

You will apply your specialist knowledge and expertise to contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making by working constructively as part of a non-executive team whilst demonstrating an understanding that Governors must act fairly and impartially, with a commitment to the principles of safeguarding, equality and diversity.

The appointed candidates will be expected to attend 4 meetings of the Board each year along with a strategic planning ‘Away Day’. The frequency of our Committee meetings varies as below:

  • Education & Standards: 3 meetings per year
  • Finance & General Purposes: 3 meetings per year
  • Audit: 3 meetings per year

Governors usually dedicate an average of around 10 hours per month to their role including meeting preparation, attendance and follow-up. However, we are privileged that our Governors also dedicate additional time to the College.

They spend time each term visiting our sites, engaging with our staff and students, and using this as a chance to see our impacts first-hand.

We try to always ensure that meetings are held in person as this allows Governors to experience the vibrant College atmosphere whilst on site.

We hope to receive applications from individuals who would be open to offering a similar level of commitment to our organisaiton.

All of our Governors are supported throughout their terms of office. Induction, training and development opportunities are all available, as well as the invitation to attend a range of exciting events and ceremonies throughout the year. This type of engagement by the Governing Body with the wider College community is both encouraged and supported. It allows our Governors to fully appreciate the vibrancy, inclusivity and success of the organisation.
