About Itchen College

Itchen is a sixth form college in the east of Southampton known for its inclusive character serving a student population of 1400 full-time 16-18 students and a number of international students. There is also provision for adults studying part-time on vocational and academic courses, alongside a growing ‘community’ offer in conjunction with Southampton City Council and Hampshire County Council. Itchen is committed to improving the life chances of every student through the development of skills and knowledge enabling ambitious progression as aspirational, confident and resilient individuals.

A significant change programme has been developed and implemented leading to sustained progress in the culture of the college together with the operational systems and processes to support effective learning. This positive culture has raised aspirations for staff and students, with a clear vision for progress. This has significantly improved standards in teaching and learning and student achievement whilst also strengthening the sense of community.

The reputation Itchen has for inclusion and support means the College attracts a significant number of vulnerable students, considered potentially ‘at risk’ to whom a key support worker is offered. Southampton has higher than average levels of child poverty. 30% of children in the Southampton Itchen constituency live in poverty compared to an average of 16% of UK children.

The east of Southampton is an area marked by very low levels of participation in Higher Education. The immediate catchment post code areas are all in the lowest decile according to national data, with Bitterne specifically 27 out of 7697 post code areas in the country. This can be seen as an indicator of low expectations and aspirations, but high employment, albeit in lower paid jobs. The College is in receipt of funding from the Southern Universities Network as a result and is considered a key partner in improving social mobility in the city and wider travel to learn area.

Itchen has an established reputation for sporting success and is a host college for Sport England’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme. Football teams from Itchen have achieved national champion status.

The majority of students across all levels at Itchen, progress well onto opportunities in further education, higher education or employment within the city of Southampton. The College has positive partnerships established through curriculum areas with local FE, HE and employment destinations including Carnival, P&O Cruises, the fitness industry and childcare providers.

Role Description

The work of a Member of the Corporation Board (Governor) in setting the strategic direction of Itchen College and providing leadership is central to the success of the College. By becoming a Governor at Itchen College, you will be joining a high performing board and successful college. This is your opportunity to steer provision that benefits the students, the local community and employers directly. Being a Governor at Itchen College is hugely rewarding and is an opportunity to make a real difference to the communities served by the college.

While in some respects the role of the Board of Governors can be summed up as one of exercising “oversight” of a college and its business, the term should not be taken to imply in any sense a passive or merely symbolic role. The Board is accountable for the financial solvency of the College, its sound management and the quality of the service which it provides. The Board is also accountable for the proper use of the public funds entrusted to it.

Sound governance requires more than simply ensuring that the books balance and that the CEO & Principal is getting on with the business of running the College within the parameters established by the governors. Colleges must be able to respond to changes in direction of government policy and anticipate changing needs in their communities. The Corporation Board must be actively involved in reviewing the role of the College and in planning and managing change to ensure the long-term health and success of the College.

You will need to have a passion for education and a drive for ambition to build on the College’s continued success for the benefit of their students, their staff and the local community. This should be underpinned with a track record of strong strategic leadership in some of the following areas:

  • Finance
  • Educational Curriculum and quality
  • Growth and engagement
  • Local business
  • Legal

These roles offer a fantastic opportunity to join an ambitious and dynamic Governing Board and genuinely have an impact on the future success of the College, its students, its staff and community. You will support the development and influence the direction of Itchen College at a time of great momentum as they seek to grow the organisation and aspire to provide outstanding education and training opportunities for young people and adults across the Southampton and wider Hampshire Area.
