Governors Halesowen College

Bring your passion for learning and drive to support young people and adults to succeed through education by becoming a Governor at Halesowen College.

  • Location: Halesowen, West Midlands
  • Salary: Reasonable expenses paid
  • Closing date: Monday 4th March

Halesowen College is embarking on a new and exciting era. We are a cornerstone of the local community, place our learners at the epicentre of all that we do, and have the ambition to be exceptional, inspiring our learners of all ages, backgrounds and levels of ability to flourish personally and professionally.

We celebrate the diversity of our community and are proud that at Halesowen College, everyone can be themselves.

We have some challenges as our area lags behind the rest of the UK in terms of qualifications, employment, pay and skills. However, we are optimistic, and our strategic plan sets out a clear vision for upskilling and educating local people to enable them to gain sustainable employment and live happy and fulfilled lives.

We believe that education is powerful and provides choices. With our broad and impactful curriculum, dedicated and talented staff, motivational learning environment and high-quality standards, we can ensure our students learn, flourish and succeed.

The Corporation is comprised of up to seventeen members from diverse backgrounds, who collectively have the skills and experience necessary to be effective critical friends to the College. This includes roles of oversight, challenge, and support, which are conducted in an open and accountable manner through a cycle of board and committee meetings. Our governors are encouraged and supported in their role through induction, development and opportunities to visit the College.

We are an expressly inclusive and diverse college and, as both an accredited Leaders in Diversity organisation and an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all groups of society, including those who are underrepresented.

‘We are committed to the development of our learners as people, to keeping them safe and preparing them to succeed in the world. To this end, our support for learners is exceptional.’

About Halesowen College

Halesowen College is a lively, ambitious and highly inclusive tertiary college providing a broad and extremely supportive education to young people from across the West Midlands and in an increasing range of vocational higher education courses, apprenticeships and training for adults. We have c.4,600 16-18 learners. We are also the largest employer in the town with over 500 employees.

The College has maintained a good reputation and Ofsted rating for a sustained period. However, we are not satisfied with being “good” and are determined to provide the best possible education and training for all our learners, which means striving for excellence in all that we do.

To support this, we have clear aims to:

  • Provide an impactful, inclusive and broad curriculum to meet the needs of learners and address the skills deficit.
  • Provide exceptional quality of education that inspires students to learn, flourish and succeed.
  • Provide a physical and digital estate that are visionary and provide motivational environments in which to learn.
  • Maintain sustainability and financial resilience to invest in our environment and excellence in education.
  • To be known for exceptional education, support, skills development and positive impact – reputation that we proudly uphold.

We actively promote equality, welcome all learners whose needs we can meet and strive to make our college a “learning village”, where learners of all levels, backgrounds and disciplines mix freely and benefit from contact with each other — so that the College is a place where everyone can be who they are and be the best they can be.

We are committed to the development of our learners as people, to keeping them safe and preparing them to succeed in the world. To this end, our support for learners is exceptional.

The College works extensively with employers across the whole range of our provision and has growing numbers of apprentices including at higher levels.

The College also offers vocational higher education courses in areas of the curriculum where we can deliver a high-quality experience, extend participation and make progression opportunities available locally — and we expect this provision to continue to grow.

We work with adults in a range of settings and at various levels, and we believe Halesowen College has a greater role to play in improving adult skills in our communities.

Role Description

Governors

The role of a Governor is to provide challenge and support to the Principal and senior post holders in undertaking their roles and is defined as:

  • Ensuring the educational character and mission of the College reflects the needs of the communities served.
  • Use public funds correctly, as funding bodies require, and to the benefit of the communities served.
  • Ensuring appropriate staffing is in place, especially the appointment of senior post holders and setting the framework for pay and conditions of other staff.
  • Complying with the Instruments and Articles, Financial Memorandum, Code of Conduct and College financial regulations and procedures.
  • Contributing to the development and supporting the implementation of the strategy for the College as determined by the Corporation.

We are looking to engage Governors with the passion and interest in supporting the lives of young people and adults through education. You do not need to be an expert in education but what you do need is the drive and ambition to support others to succeed, to be an ambassador for the College and all that we do for our local communities, students, stakeholders and our people.

Having recently carried out a skills audit of our current governors, there are some particular areas of expertise that we are keen to engage to the Board – these are:

  • Finance and/or audit
  • Education – Curriculum development & quality improvement
  • Strategic business leadership – with links to the local community and region

More importantly than skill, we are looking to engage people who will challenge the senior leadership team by asking the right questions and enabling the team to think differently about the future of the College, our people, students, stakeholders and our communities.

We welcome interest and applications from all backgrounds and are committed to ensuring that our Board reflects the communities we serve.
